  • Nanosize YIG powders added by Cerium which is exellent element in magneto-optical effect were synthesized by Sol-Gel method using Ethylene Glycol solvent. In 120 to 150 minute reaction time, stable sol solution which showed no change in viscosity, pH, and aging time was obtained. Monolithic YIG was synthesized at 80$0^{\circ}C$ with DTA and XRD measurement and its lattice parameter had a tendency to increase from 12.3921 $\AA$. Increasing annealing temperature from 80$0^{\circ}C$ to 105$0^{\circ}C$, average particle size was in the range of 40 nm to 330 nm. Saturation magnetization (M$_{s}$) value was increased from 18.37 to 21.25 emu/g due to enhancement of YIG crystallity and decreasing of orthoferrite phase. On the other hand, coercivity (H$_{c}$) value increased up to 90$0^{\circ}C$ and then decreased above 90$0^{\circ}C$. With increasing Ce addition, coercivity was almost not changed but saturation magnetization value was maximum at Ce 0.1 mol% and then decreased because of increasing a orthoferrite amount. Also, curie temperature (T$_{c}$) of YIG were not changed with Ce addition.ion.

  • Cigarette smoke causes atypical structure of pulmonary (cell structural) and oxidative damage. Therefore, we carried out to determine if exposure to cigarette smoke alters pulmonary structure and anti-oxidant related enzyme in a ICR mice model, when natural product extracts using by manual sprayer. The mice were divided into five groups, control group, sham-treated group (Sham), natural product extracts-treated group (NPE), natural product extracts-treated with smoke-exposed group (NPE-SM) and smoke-exposed (SM) group. All groups are similar to control group in weight, but SM group is lower than the other groups. Microscopic image of the pulmonary structure in SM group showed deleterious alterations in the morphology, but the other groups are maintained in original structure. In anti-oxidant related enzyme, SOD (superoxide dismutase) and catalase, SM group represents the lowest enzyme activity among all groups. These results indicate that the natural product extracts is an efficient tissue protective agent against smoke-induced lung injury.

  • The complex formation of anti-inflamatory drug piroxicam (PX, 4-hydroxy-2-methyl-N-2--pridyl-2H-1,2-benzothiazine-3-carboxadiamide-1,1-dioxide) with transition metal ions Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) in methanol(MeOH)/water binary mixtures were studied by spectrophotometric method at 25$^{\circ}C$, constant pH = 5.0 and I = 0.1 M. The computer program SQUAD was used to extract the desired information from the spectral data. The outputs of the fitting processes were stability constants, standard deviations of the estimated stability constants, concentration distribution diagrams and spectral profiles of all species. The sequence of the stability constants of PX complexes with Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) follow the Cu(II) > Co(II) > Ni(II) ${\approx}$ Zn(II) order. This may be due to different geometry tendencies of these metal ions. The acidity constants of the PX were also determined under above condition from its absorption spectra at different pH values. The computer program DATAN was used for determination of acidity constants of PX. The validity of the obtained acidity constants was checked by a well known computer program SPECFIT/32. The effects of the different parameters like solvent nature, cations characteristics on the stability and acidity constants were thoroughly discussed.

  • Succinic acid is an important precursor in industries producing biopolymers, pharmaceutical and food additives and green solvents. However, due to the high price of petroleum and the global $CO_2$ emission, the biological production of succinic acid from renewable biomass is a novel process due to the fixation of $CO_2$ into succinate during fermentation. In this study, aqueous two phase systems based on imidazolium ionic liquids/$K_2HPO_4$ were used as an effective separation and concentration process for succinic acid. Experimental results show that aqueous two phase systems can be formed by adding appropriate amount of imidazolium ionic liquids to aqueous $K_2HPO_4$ solutions in the presence of succinic acid. It can be found that the ability of imidazolium ionic liquids for phase separation followed the order [HMIm][Br]${\fallingdotseq}$[OMIm][Br]>[BMIm][Br]>[EMIm][Br]. The maximum value of extraction efficiency for succinic acid was about 90% and the amount of coextracted water into top phase is proportional to the chain length of cation in imidazolium ionic liquids. It was concluded that the aqueous two phase systems composed of imidazolium ionic liquids/$K_2HPO_4$ was effective for the selective extraction and concentration of succinic acid.

  • To determine the properties for juice preperation of Black Omija (Schizandra nigra Max.) and Omija (Schizandra chinensis), yield of extraction, chromaticity and lightness, pH and soluble solid of the extract were investigated. The rate of extract yield from Schizandra nigra was highest when extracted for 3 hours at 80$^{\circ}C$ in 20% ethanol solution. For the desirable chromaticity coordinates, the optimum extraction time and temperature of Schizandra nigra extract were 3 hours at 80$^{\circ}C$. The lightness of the extract was low of the value when extraction time and temperature was long and high. The sugar content of the extract of S. nigra was 2.02.6% Brix, lower than that of S. chinensis, but the difference was insignificant. The pH of the extract from S. nigra was 0.10.2 higher than that of S. chinensis. Although the pH of the extract from S. nigra was a little low when extracted by water, the pH range was enough to maintain the stability of color of extract from the S. chinensis.

  • This study was carried out to determine the inhibitory effects of solvent extracts from Sargassum hemiphyllum on growth of cancer cell lines (AGS human gastric adenocarcinoma and HT-29 human colon cancer cells) and production of lipid peroxides. Inhibitory effects of acetone with methylene chloride extract from S. hemiphyllum on the growth of AGS and HT-29 cancer cells were increased as dose dependent patterns (p<0.05). The methanol extract was more effective on inhibition of growth of AGS. The treatments of hexane, 85% aq. methanol, butanol and water fractions significantly inhibited the growth of cancer cells (p<0.05) and the inhibitory effect was stronger in HT-29. In DCFH-DA (dichlorodihydrofluorescin diacetate) assay, acetone with methylene chloride and methanol extracts showed a stronger inhibitory effect on the production of cellular lipid peroxides (p<0.05) compared with the butanol and hexane fractions. These results indicate that the consumption of S. hemiphyllum may be recommended as a potent functional food for preventing cellular oxidation and cancer.

  • To fabricate a copper (Cu)-based fine conductive filler having antioxidation property, submicron silver (Ag)-coated Cu particles were fabricated and their antioxidation property was evaluated. After synthesizing the Cu particles of $0.705{\mu}m$ in average diameter by a wet-reduction process, Ag-coated Cu particles were fabricated by successive Ag plating using ethylene grycol solvent. Main process parameters in the Ag plating were the concentration of reductant (ascorbic acid), the injection rate of Ag precursor solution, and the stirring rate in mixed solution. Thus, Ag plating characteristics and the formation of separate fine pure Ag phase were observed with different combinations of process parameters. As a result, formation of the separate pure Ag phase and aggregation between Ag-coated Cu particles could be suppressed by optimization of the process parameters. The Ag-coated Cu particles which were fabricated using optimal conditions showed slight aggregation, but excellent antioxidation property. For example, the particles indicated the weight gain not exceeding 0.1% until $225^{\circ}C$ when they were heated in air at the rate of $10^{\circ}C/min$ and no weight gain until 75 min when they were heated in air at $150^{\circ}C$.

  • In new millennium, wide-reaching demands for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst have been increased gradually in new millennium. SCR catalyst can prevent the NOx emission to protect the environment. In SCR catalyst the main composition of the catalyst is typically TiO2 (70~80%), WO3 (7~10%), V2O5 (~1%) and others. When the SCR catalysts are used up and disposed to landfills, it is problematic that those should exist in the landfill site permanently due to their extremely low degradability. A new advanced technology needs to be developed primarily to protect environment and then recover the valuable metals. Hydrometallurgical techniques such as leaching and liquid-liquid extraction was designed and developed for the spent SCR catalyst processing. In a first stage, V and W selectively leached from spent SCR catalyst, then both the metals were processed by liquid-liquid extraction process. Various commercial extractants such as D2EHPA, PC 88A, TBP, Cyanex 272, Aliquat 336 were tested for selective extraction of title metals. Scrubbing and stripping studies were tested and optimized for vanadium and tungsten extraction and possible separation. 3rd phase studies were optimized by using iso-decanol reagent.

  • Biomaterials for retinal tissue engineering must demonstrate several critical features for potential utility, including mechanical integrity, biocompatibility, and slow biodegradation. Silk film biomaterials were designed and characterized to meet these functional requirements. We prepared natural/synthetic hybrid silk/PLGA films using 0, 10, 20, 40, and 80 wt% of silk by a solvent evaporation method. MIT assay was used to confirm the number of cells attached on film at 1, 2, and 3 days, respectively. The morphology of cellular adhesion on films was also confirmed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). RT-PCR was conducted to confrrm mRNA expression of retinal pigment epithelitun (RPE) using RPE65 as a RPEs marker and the expression of cytokeratin were determined by immunofluorescence staining. We confirmed that the silk/PLGA film of 20~40 wt% silk was superior for the adhesion and proliferation of RPEs.
