The hydrographic data collected at three different times July, 1994, May, 1995 and June, 1996 around Taean peninsula in the mid-Yellow Sea off Korea, well known for the well-defined surface thermal fronts in summer, were analyzed. In the vertically well-mixed area where water depths varied from 15 m depth to 60 m depth, the temperature difference in the water column was less than $1^{\circ}C$. The temperature observed in the vertically well-mixed area was reversely related with the water depths and the coldest surface water was always observed over the deep channel with the depth of more than 50m, which developed southwestward off the promontory of Taean peninsula, irrespective of the observation period. The strengths of surface thermal front observed in June were much stronger than those in July, even though the surface temperature of stratified area were nearly the same as in July. These observed features could be explained as follows: A major physical process for the formation of the surface thermal front is the vertical mixing of water column but the detailed thermal structure in the study area depend on the physical parameters such as the water depth in the vertically well-mixed side and the vertical thermal structure in the stratified side.

Seasonal and year-to-year variations of water quality were observed at six stations in Mokpo Harbor area between 1997 and 2004. Water quality(salinity, pH, DIN and DIP) was variable between years. Salinity was significantly low in 1998, while nutrient concentrations were significantly higher in 1998 than other years. Water temperature, salinity, DO, COD and DIP concentrations exhibited clear seasonal variations, and these seasonal trends reflected seasonal changes in fresh water discharge from Youngsan river mouth. Water temperature, COD and DIP were significantly higher in August, while salinity and DO reached minimum values in August. In the station 1(Youngsan river mouth), waters with low salinity are subject to high nutrient inputs from Youngsan river, while in the station 6 (outside from Mokpo harbor) waters are primarily oceanic Relationship between water quality parameters indicates that salinity is the primary factor influencing the COD, DO, pH, Chlorophyll a and nutrient concentrations in Mokpo harbor area.

In this paper, an analysis of the inflowing pollution load of the rivers in Hampyeong bay showed the average organic matter pollution loads of BOD, COD, and TOC to be 79.7 kg-BOD/day, 144.06 kg-COD/day, and 93.0 kg-TOC/day, respectively. The inflowing organic matter pollution load was the heaviest in Sonbul dike, followed by Jupo bridge and Yangman complex. With regard to season, the load characteristics were outstanding in July, the rainy period in the summer. The average inflowing pollution loads of nutrients were 20.9 kg-DIN/day, 17.1 kg-DIP/day, 148 kg-TN/day, and 37.4 kg-TP/day A comparison of the inflowing nutrients loads for each river showed the load to be the heaviest in Yangman complex, followed by Baegok bridge and Jupo bridge. In the experiment on the material budgets of Hampyeong bridge conducted using a box model, the detention time of fresh water was found to be 52.4 days, with the bay displaying the characteristics of a so dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) in the nutrients material budgets, ${\Delta}DIN$ values were found to be negative, indicating the tendency of consumption and open sea leak by photosynthesis to be higher than the nitrogen that flowed in. As for dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP), ${\Delta}DIP$ showed positive values, indicating a tendency for accumulation as the supply through organic matter decomposition, elution load of sediments, and inflowing load of the river turned out to be higher than the consumption by phytoplankton and outflow to open sea.
Silver croaker (Pennahia argentata) is a turbulent species that is widely distributed worldwide and is mainly found in the bottom of the ocean. In the study, we characterized the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) on P. argentata inhabiting Gwangyang Bay and analyzed the phylogenetic location of marine fish species. As a result of multiple arrangement of 605 bp COI sequences, high homology of mtDNA nucleotide sequences was confirmed in the silver croakers from Gwangyang Bay (98~100%). However, the nucleotide variation was different according to the catching points of the inland and the open seas of Gwangyang Bay. The nucleotide sequence variation in COI was high in P. argentata from the open seas of Gwangyang Bay (43.2~70.3%). Furthermore, the phylogenetic analysis of 13 fish showed that P. argentata from Gwangyang Bay were grouped into one clade with P. argentata reported in Taiwan, and the evolutionary distance was 0.036. In addition, it was identified that the evolutionary distance was close to that of fish belonging to the Mi-iuy croaker (Miichthys miiuy) and the Big-head pennah croaker (Pennahia Macrocephalus) (0.041~0.048). The result of these studies will be used as the key genetic information for fisheries resources monitoring and species diversity management according to the coastal environment.

We investigated seasonal changes in the marine environments and phytoplankton communities in the western part of south coastal waters of Korea during May 2009 and February 2010. In multidimensional scaling analysis of in situ data obtained by shipboard observations, the coastal waters comprised four different water masses: Yellow Sea water mass (YW) of low temperature and salinity, and high suspended solids and nutrient concentrations; south-western coastal water mass (SW) of high salinity and nutrient concentrations; Tsushima Current water mass (TW) of low nutrient concentrations, and high temperature and salinity; and closed bay water mass (CW). The spatial extent of these water masses varied according to seasonal environmental characteristics. In particular, at most study sites, TW expanded during autumn toward coastal waters. Phytoplankton abundances peaked during autumn in CW and spring in YW, which coincided with periods of high nutrient concentrations. In particular, diatoms predominated, and attained an abundance of more than 90% in most water masses. However, dinoflagellates in TW comprised a proportion of approximately 20% abundance.
The circulation due to tidal current and river discharge, and the associated suspended suspended sediment transport in macrotidal Keum Estuary, were studied through a series of field measurements of tidal currents and suspended sediment concentration at three anchored stations from 1990 through 1992. From the measurements, the following results were obtained. At the seaward entrance of the estuary, the veritical profiles of the ebb and flood currents were almost symmetric. At the southern channel the flood current was dominant in the whole water column, but in the northern channel the ebb current was dominant in the surface and bottom layers and the flood current was dominant in the intermediate layer. The maximum velocity of the tidal current in the southern channel was 174 cm/s during flood tide in the intermediate layer. The maximum velocity, 148 cm/s in the northern channel also appeared during flood tide in the intermediate layer. However, in the surface and bottom layers, the maximum velocities were 110.6 cm/s during ebb tide and 92.1 cm/s during flood tide, respectively. The type of the Keum Estuary can be categorized to 'Type 3' of Hansen and Rattray's scheme. The water column of the estuary during the flood tide becomes stratified, and after high water the ebb current reduces the density difference and the water column becomes turbulent. The lower layer of the water column is generally turbulent. The largest sediment flux 20.61 ton/s was found in the southern channel during flood current in the lowest river discharge (May, 1991), while the smallest flux, 0.65 ton/s in the northern channel in the lowest tidal range (July, 1992). The stronger bottom shear velocity for the present study area seems to erode the bottom sediments during the flood tide, and the relatively long duration of the ebb tide to transport the suspended sediments. Under normal river discharge conditions, the suspended sediments are transported mainly through the southern channel. However, under high river discharge condition the suspended sediment transport is dominant through the northern channel.

Coastal boundary current flows along the eastern boundary of the Yellow Sea and its speed was about 0.l m/s during the summer 2007. In order to find major factors that affect the coastal boundary current in the eastern Yellow Sea, three-dimensional numerical model experiments were performed. The model simulation results were validated against hydrographic and current meter data in the eastern Yellow Sea. The eastern boundary current flows along the bottom front over the upper part of slopping bottom. Strength and position of the current were affected by tides, winds, local river discharge, and solar radiation. Tidal stirring and surface wind mixing were major factors that control the summertime boundary currents along the bottom front. Tidal stirring was essential to generate the bottom temperature front and boundary current. Wind mixing made the boundary current wider and augmented its north-ward transport. Buoyancy forcing from the freshwater input and solar radiation also affected the boundary current but their contributions were minor. Strong (weak) tidal mixing during spring (neap) tides made the northward transport larger (smaller) in the numerical simulations. But offshore position of the eastern boundary current's major axis was not apparently changed by the spring-neap cycle in the mid-eastern Yellow Sea due to strong summer stratification. The mean position of coastal boundary current varied due to variations in the level of wind mixing.

The temperature inversions were studied on the basis of Digital Memory Bathythermography(DBT) data collected by training ship, Pusan 402, of the National Fisheries University of Pusan in August 23~25, 1986 and Fisheries Reserach and Development Agency of Korea in August, 1986, The results were as follows; Among the 67 stations of studied area, occurrence frequency of temperature inversion was 58.20%, And the frequency of onefold occurrence of temperature inversion at its profile of each station was 13.42%. of twofold occurrence was 20.80%, and of threefold occurrence was 23.88%. In the studied area, the temperature inversion usually occurred below the 40m depth and its layers also located below the thermocline. The temperature range of its inversion was from 14$^{\circ}C$ to 16$^{\circ}C$. The temperature inversion in the study area was oaused by the interaction between Tsushima Warm Current and Korea Coastal Waters.
The formation and structure of tidal front in the eastern part of the Yellow Sea were studied based on the oceanographic data compiled during the periods of $1982{\sim}1983$ and $1966{\sim}1970$. Well-defined fronts occurring in the Yellow Sea in summer mark the boundary between the stratified and vertically mixed regimes. The occurrence of vertically mixed regimes may be interpreted in terms of available turbulent kinematic energy of tidal currents. The tidal frontal regions were determined by horizontal gradients of temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen, and were verified by water colour and transparency. In summer the tidal fronts were found at depths of $15{\sim}25m$ at about 20 miles from the shore. Potential energy of vortical stratification in the tidal frontal region was 10 $Joule/m^3$. The stratification parameter in the frontal region computed from the numerical tidal model was $S_p=1.0.$ Tidal front is formed in regions with $S_p=1-1.5,$ if surface heat flux are constant. Waters in the stratified region have the layer structures of wind-mixed surface layer, thermocline and tidal-mixed bottom layer. In the vertically mixed region, however, sea water is nearly homogeneous. in winter no distinctive tidal front was seen.

The southern tidal flat of Kanghwa Island is one of the biggest flats on the west coast of Korea. Tide is typically a semidiurnal with maximum range of about 10m. The tidal flat receives large amount of sediments from Han River system. Surface sediments for sedimentary analyses were sampled at 83 stations in the study area in August 2003. The surface sediments consisted of five sedimentary facies. Generally, sandy mud sediments dominated in the southern tidal flat of Kanghwa Island, whereas sand sediments dominated in channel and subtidal zones of the western part of Kanghwa Island. The area of sandy mud sediment extended to eastward tidal flat compared to sedimentary facies in August 1997. Sedimentary facies analysis of three core sediments from the tidal flat to the south of the Kangwha Island revealed three sedimentary facies: trough-cross-bedded sand, laminated silt, and bioturbated silt. Distribution of the facies in the cores suggested that sedimentation rates has been generally high in the margin of main tidal channel, especially in the east of the Donggeum Island. Twelve-and-half-hour anchoring survey was carried out for measurements of hydrodynamic parameters at Yeomha channel near Choji Bridge(K1) and channel near Donggeum Island(K2) in June 2003. Residual flows indicated strong ebb-dominated tidal currents. Depth-integrated net suspended sediment loads for one tidal cycle were seaward movement with 309,217.9kg/m and 128,123.1kg/m at station K1 and K2, respectively. The higher value of net suspended sediment loads at station K1 suggested that lots of suspended sediments from Han River deposited in the eastern part of tidal flat.
