  • The purpose of this study was to explore whether posttraumatic growth moderates the effects of stress on depression and quality of life in cancer survivors. Data were collected from 173 cancer survivors in Seoul, Gyeonggi, Chungcheong, and Jeolla provinces. We used hierarchical regression to analyze the data. As the results, first, the interaction of stress and posttraumatic growth affected depression and quality of life. It means that even though the levels of stress are high when the levels of posttraumatic growth are high, the levels of depression are lower and the levels of quality of life are higher than posttraumatic growth being low. Second, the interaction of stress and posttraumatic growth affected two sub-factors of quality of life. We discussed the interventions to reduce depression and to increase quality of life.

  • The purpose of this study was to describe the semantic system and process of posttraumatic growth experience of firefighters after colleague's suicide. Grounded theory methodology based on symbolic interactionism was utilized. The subjects of this study were 7 firefighters who experienced the colleague's suicide. Data were collected by using in-depth interviews from October 1 to November 30, 2015. The results showed that "Gradually becoming more resilient" was analyzed to be the core category of firefighters' posttraumatic growth. We derived four categories and nine subcategories. Based on the results, it is necessary to develop a convergence intervention program to promote posttraumatic growth of firefighters exposed to various traumatic events.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of unconditional self-acceptance and self-exposure of trainees on the post-traumatic growth and to develop a program to achieve post-traumatic growth beyond the previous level without suffering from psychopathological consequences such as post-traumatic stress disorder I wanted to help. For this purpose, unconditional self-acceptance, self-exposure, and Korean post-traumatic growth scale were used. First, it was confirmed that unconditional self-acceptance and self-exposure of firefighters are correlated with post-traumatic growth. Second, hierarchical regression analysis showed that unconditional self-acceptance has more influence on self-acceptance and post-traumatic growth than self-acceptance of firefighters. Based on the results of this study, we propose the program development and therapeutic intervention strategies to promote post-traumatic growth of firefighters.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine posttraumatic growth (PTG) in family caregivers of patients with cancer. Methods: Participants included 201 family caregivers of cancer patients who are treated at outpatient clinics and oncology wards of a university hospital and two general hospitals in Busan, Korea. The study instrument was the Korean version of the posttraumatic growth inventory (K-PTGI). Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t test, one-way ANOVA and Scheffe's test using the SPSS 21 for Windows. Results: The mean score of PTG was 3.10. The factor with the highest score was "Changes to self-perception" (3.15), while the one with the lowest was "Increase in spiritual interest" (2.88). There were significant differences in PTG, depending on age, religion, importance of religious life and perceived level of daily difficulties. Conclusion: Family caregivers also experience PTG when their loved ones are diagnosed with cancer. According to these findings, it is necessary to develop a spiritual nursing program to help family caregivers growth from the experience of attending patients with cancer.

For this purpose, the posttraumatic growth program was developed in accordance with the group counseling program that based on the needs of field experts and the needs of the subjects. This program consisted of 10 sessions. To verify the effectiveness of the developed program, 20 characterization high school students were divided into experimental group and control group, and a total of 10 sessions were performed twice a week. After the program was conducted on the experimental group, quantitative analysis was conducted for comparison according to the lapse of time: before, after, and follow-up. independent sample t-analysis was used to examine homogeneity between two groups beforehand. Mixed ANOVA was also used to verify a hypothesis. In conclusion, the posttraumatic growth program has significant effects on posttraumatic growth and intentional rumination level with experienced adolescents. Findings and implications of this study were discussed.

  • This study aimed to explore the effects of perceived family stress, supportive resources, intentional rumination, and coping behaviors on posttraumatic growth of cancer survivors based on the Double ABCX Family Stress Model. Data were collected from 200 cancer survivors currently living with their spouses and analyzed by path analysis using AMOS program. The results of this study were as follows. First, perceived family stress of cancer survivors had direct effects on supportive resources, intentional rumination, and coping behaviors, and had indirect effects on posttraumatic growth mediated by supportive resources, intentional rumination, and coping behaviors. Second, supportive resources, intentional rumination, and coping behaviors had direct effects on posttraumatic growth. Third, supportive resources and intentional rumination had direct effects on coping behaviors and had an indirect effect on posttraumatic growth mediated by coping behaviors. The current study supported the applicability of the Double ABCX Family Stress Model to the posttraumatic growth process of cancer survivors.

  • The purpose of this study was to specifically explore the path leading to posttraumatic growth through self-efficacy, which is the personal psychological characteristic of adults who have experienced trauma, through cognitive flexibility and sequential mediating effects of hope. For this purpose, an online survey was conducted for adults aged 19 to 65 years old across the country with trauma experience. Among them, 316 data suitable for research analysis were analyzed. The results of this study are as follows. First, posttraumatic growth showed a statistically significant positive correlation with self-efficacy, alternative and control of cognitive flexibility, and hope. Second, the increase in posttraumatic growth was directly related to the increase in hope, and the increased hope was found to be positively related to the increased alternative and self-efficacy level. Third, in the relationship between self-efficacy and posttraumatic growth, the sequential mediating effect of alternatives and hopes was found to be statistically significant. Based on these findings, implications, limitations and suggestions of the study were discussed.

  • This study examined the posttraumatic growth of North Korean defectors, the relation between their characteristics and posttraumatic growth and the factors influencing their posttraumatic growth, and explored methods of improving their mental health status. 145 North Korean defectors, who were trained in B city and G city, participated in the survey from February 1 to March 10, 2016. The posttraumatic growth, resilience, self-esteem, deliberate rumination, and impact of the (traumatic) event were measured using the PTGI (Posttraumatic Growth Inventory), RS (Rumination Scale, Resilience Scale), SES (Self-esteem Scale) and ISR (Impact of Event). The data were analyzed using the t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression. The mean scores were 29.64 for posttraumatic growth. There were significant positive correlations between posttraumatic growth and resilience and between posttraumatic growth and rumination. The influence of the independent variables on the total posttraumatic growth was examined using regression analysis. Models including the variables (resilience, positive self-esteem, and rumination) explained 54.2% of the variance for the posttraumatic growth. These findings demonstrate that it is essential for nurses to continuously intervene and help North Korean defectors so as to promote their posttraumatic growth and resilience. Furthermore, it is also necessary for nurses to find ways to develop ideal interventions in order to activate deliberate rumination.
