On the Scientific Name of the Invaded Planthopper (Hemiptera: Fulgoroidea: Ricaniidae) in Korea (외래침입해충인 갈색날개매미충(노린재목: 꽃매미상과: 큰날개매미충과)의 재동정 결과 보고)

  • Brown ricaniid planthopper (Hemiptera: Fulgoroidea) is one of the invaded pests in Korea. However, this species has been misidentified or not identified yet, caused confusions in taxonomy or agroecosystem. In the present study, we collected the specimens occurring in Korea nationwide and taxonomically reviewed. Consequently, we confirmed its scientific name as Ricania sublimata. Herein, a key to the Korean Ricania is provided.

Ultrastructure Characterization of Hemcytes in Larvae of Protaetia brevitarsis seulensis (흰점박이꽃무지 유충의 혈구세포에 대한 형태학적 특성)

  • In this study, we used electron microscopic analysis to characterize the hemocytes in the last larva of Protaetia brevitarsis seulensis (Colbe) (Cetoniidae, Coleoptera). Granulocytes (GR), plasmatocytes (PL), oenocytoids (OE), spherulocytes (SP), prohemocytes (PR) and adipohemocytes (AD) were classified based on their size and ultrastructural differences in the circulating hemocytes. Many dark granules (<$1{\mu}m$ in diameter) in the GR's cytoplasm were observed and well-developed mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum (ER), nucleus, and Golgi complex were also seen. After microorganisms infected, the GRs were morphologically activated and phagocytosed them. Especially, dark granules (lysosomes) were fused themselves and these bigger granules finally agglomerate together with microorganisms. Other hemocytes seem to have no immune functions.

Assessing the Climatic Suitability for the Drywood Termite, Cryptotermes domesticus Haviland (Blattodea: Kalotermitidae), in South Korea (마른나무흰개미(가칭)의 국내 기후적합성 평가)

  • A recent discovery of drywood termites (Cryptotermes domesticus) in a residential facility in Seoul has raised significant concern. This exotic insect species, which can damage timber and wooden buildings, necessitates an immediate investigation of potential infestation. In this study, we assessed the climatic suitability for this termite species using a species distribution modeling approach. Global distribution data and bioclimatic variables were compiled from published sources, and predictive models for climatic suitability were developed using four modeling algorithms. An ensemble prediction was made based on the mean occurrence probability derived from the individual models. The final model suggested that this species could potentially establish itself in tropical coastal regions. While the climatic suitability in South Korea was generally found to be low, a careful investigation is still warranted due to the potential risk of colonization and establishment of this species.

  • The resistance of a non-transgenic poplar clone, 'Ogy' and three transgenic poplar lines to the cottonwood leaf beetle, Chrysomela scripta F., was evaluated by in vitro feeding. The lines were transformed with neomycin phosphotransferase II(NPT II) as a selectable marker, proteinase inhibitor II(pin2) as a resistance gene, and CaMV 35S as a promoter. An efficient method of sterilizing the beetle eggs and introducing them into plant tissue cultures was developed. The resistance of the transgenic lines was investigated in terms of effects tin leaf area consumed, insect weight, insect developmental stages, and plantlet root dry weight after feeding. Also, leaf area consumed was examined by leaf age as measured through leaf plastochron index(LPI). The leaf area consumed and insect weight were highly significant between transformants and control, and insect development in vitro was significant among the transgenic lines. Larval infestation was the most severe around LPI 4 to 5 which were young leaves. The system provided a quick, highly controlled method to screen developing transgenic plantlets directly.

  • Despite rising global concerns over the potential impacts of invasive alien species on indigenous species, the consequences of such introductions are lacking. The cabbage seedpod weevil (CSPW, Ceutorhynchus obstrictus) was found invaded into Korea in the early of 1990s. A large-scale survey in Korea reveals that, in about 20 years post-arrival, the invasive CSPW has become the most abundant on rape flowers and spread almost parts of South Korea including Is. Jeju and Is. Ulleung. Its spread is concurrent with the habitat retraction to cruciferous weeds of the native rapseed weevil (RSW, C. albosuturalis). However, Is. Yeoseo located between the mainland and Is. Jeju, showed their ratio with about 1:1. It suggests that the population of CSPW recently entered this island. Although underlying mechanisms of the decline of native species and increase of invaded species remain unknown, the potential roles of exploitative competition cannot be ruled out. Given that invasive weevil can rapidly replace native congeners, increased level of surveillances is demanding to discourage further invasion of othe alien pests.

Enhanced Expression of Foreign Gene in Baculovirus-Infected Insect Cells Using a Silkworm Hemolymph (누에 체액을 이용한 외래 유전자의 발현효율 증대)

  • To enhance expression of foreign gene by the novel expression vector, pBmKSK1, of Bombyx mori nuclear polyhedrosis virus, E. coli $\beta$-galactosidase gene expressing recombinant virus was infected in BmN-4 cells and various concentrations of silkworm hemolymph were added to the recombinant virus-infected BmN-4 cells containing fetal bovine serum. The expression efficiency of foreign gene was determined by $\beta$-galactosidase activity in the culture media. The results showed that the silkworm hemolymph was effective to expression of foreign gene in the BmN-4 cells, suggesting that the silkworm hemolymph could be substituted for fetal bovine serum in the BmN-4 cells to enhance expression of foreign gene.

조경수의 병해충-최근문제가 되는 해충들

  • 최근 환경변화와 국제교류의 확대로 인하여 예전에는 문제가 되지 않았거나, 보이지 않았던 해충들이 문제해충화 되어 우리 주변에서 정원수나 조경수에 피해를 주는 해충들이 있다. 이들은 크게 3가지로 분류되는데 (1)환경의 변화에 의한 잠재해충과 문제해충화 (2) 인간의 욕심에 의해 대면적 식재로 인한 해충의 기회 확대 (3) 국제교류 확대로 인한 외래 해충의 침입 으로 나눌 수 있다. 이번 호에서는 환경변화에 의한 해충의 발생으로 환경스트레스에 의해 식물 자체 내의 방어체계가 무너지면 어떤 특정종이나 일반 해충이 대발생하는데 식물자체 환경 스트레스에 관계하는 jasmonate의 작용 저해, 식물이 자기방어를 위해 분비하는 타감물질(allelopathy)의 분비 억제, 초식성 곤충으로부터 산란억제를 위한 연모의 부족 등 해충의 대발생을 야기 시키는 경우도 있다. 또한 지구온난화로 인한 각종 해충의 대발생은 현재 전 세계적으로 문제가 되고 있다. 기온의 상승으로 곤충의 발육이 빨라져 화기 수가 증가한다거나, 포식자와 피식자의 상호작용의 연결고리가 깨어지는 등 각종 원인으로 인한 최근 발생한 해충을 기술하였다.

A Study on the inhabitant of Hoe-ok cave in Wonju (원주(原州) 회옥굴(窟)의 서식생물(棲息生物)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究))

  • In order to accumulate the basic informations to assess the scientific and natural values of the Hoe-ok Cave located in Mountain Chi-ak, Seong-nam 2 ri, sin-rim myeon, the distribution of the species in the cave were investigated from November 2004 to June 2005. The results are as follows. The species identified in the Hoe-ok Cave were 34 species, 28 family, 18 order, 8 classes. The dominant species were the 14 species(41.2%), 11 family, 7 order in the Class of Insecta. The ecological distribution of the Heo-ok Cave, 8 species(23.5%) of troglobite, 7 species of troglophiles(20.6%), 19 species of trogloxenes(55.9%) were found and the share of the species indigenous to the cave among the population was 44%, and the species which came out of the cave occupied the larger portion among the populations inside the whole cave.

  • Monitoring exotic fruit flies is essential for quarantine procedure. Wax formulation containing fruit fly lures is relatively long-lasting in field conditions and has been applicable to monitor the fruit flies. This study was performed to extend the application of wax formulation against different fruit flies. The wax formulation containing lures was tested in Thailand, at which various exotic fruit flies inhabited. Captured flies were identified to be Bactrocera dorsalis, Zeugodacus cucurbitae, and Zeugodacus caudata by molecular diagnosis technique.

Overview of Preventive Measures against Invasive Alien Species in Korea and Suggestions for their Improvement (침입외래생물의 사전예방 제도 및 개선방향)

  • To cope with the potential risks associated with invasive alien species, the Korean Government implemented the Biodiversity Act in 2014. Among the alien species not yet introduced into that country, 24 have been designated as alert species. These include mammals, birds, fish, mollusks, insects, and plants that may invade and cause serious harm to the ecosystem. Approval from the Ministry of Environment is required to import or carry any of them. Although these measures are more advanced than those from the previous legal framework, several terms still need to be improved. First, the category of alert species should cover not only those not yet introduced but also those that are being raised or cultivated at aquariums, botanical gardens, and zoos. Second, for applicants who intend to import or carry alert species, the government must provide them with detailed standards for the ecological risk assessment of alert species as well as guidelines for their safe use in Korea to prevent their unregulated release from confinement facilities into natural environments. Third, tools and protocols should be developed for early detection and rapid responses to those escapes.
