The characteristics of longitudinal dispersion enhancement by the flow oscillation are numerically studied according to various groove geometries in a 2-D channel in the present study. The length of expanded section l$_{1}$/h$_{1}$ is varied from 0 to 8.75. The oscillating flow condition is given at both side ends, i.e., u = Asin ($2{\pi}ft$) The non-dimensional temperatures at both side ends are set to zero. The bottom and top walls are adiabatic. The local heat sources are located at the middle of the groove wall. In order to solve the governing equations, the SIMPIER algorithm is employed. The present results indicate that maximum longitudinal thermal dispersion can be achieved when the area ratio of the expanded section to the contracted section in the grooved channel becomes 1.
This study considers the feasibility of the concentration control of the feul and air by oscillating flow in the channel of Fuel Cells. Fuel Cell Stack performance is largely influenced by the fuel and air concentration. If the fuel and air concentration is lower than stoichiometry 1.25 of the fuel and 2.5 of the air, its performance deteriorates seriously because of the fuel and air starvation. In this respect the optimization of the fuel and air concentration is crucially important to maximize fuel cell stack performance. In this work, the effects of oscillating actuation are studied to control the concentration. Two important nondimensional parameters are introduced, each of which represents either the oscillating frequency or the oscillating amplitude. It is shown how these factors affect the stack performance and the efficiency of the fuel cell stack stack.
Fluid flow and heat transfer have been numerically investigated for an oscillating flow in a tube with a regenerator. The regenerator is placed between hot and cold spaces which are heated and cooled at uniform temperature. An oscillating flow is generated by the piston motion at both ends of a tube. The time dependent, two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations and energy equation are solved by using the finite-volume and moving grid method. The regenerator is adopted as Brinkmann-Forchheimer extended Darcy model. Numerical results are obtained for the flow and temperature fields, and described the effects of the oscillating frequency and amplitude ratio by the piston motion as well as the aspect ratio. The numerical results obtained indicate that the heat transfer between the tube wall and oscillating flow is increased as the oscillating frequency, amplitude ratio and the aspect ratio are increased.
The valve is the key part which governs the efficiency, noise and reliability of the compressor, so the development of analytical model about valve performance is necessary. As the valve leed is opened and closed by pressure pulsation, the flow characteristic of the refrigerant passing the valve is very important. In the present study, a circular disk with inclination is assumed to be the valve reed of a reciprocating compressor and numerical analysis of three dimensional velocity fields are perfomed for the radial flow through the valve model. The effective flow and force area which are required to predict the efficiency of the valve are measured and compared with the numerical analysis in this research.
PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry)was used to visualize the interaction of reed valve of the reciprocating compressor. The valve is the key part which governs the efficiency, noise and reliability of the compressor, so the development of analytical model about valve performance is necessary. As the valve reed is opened and closed by pressure pulsation, the flow characteristic of the refrigerant passing the valve is very important. In the present study, a circular disk with inclination is assumed to be the valve reed of a reciprocating compressor, The mean velocity shows the vortical characteristic of this flow. It is found that the back flow is affected by the height of reed valve of reciprocating compressor.
This study considers the feasibility of the concentration control of the methanol solution by oscillating flow in the anode channel of passive type Direct Methanol Fuel Cells(DMFC). DMFC stack performance is largely influenced by the fuel concentration. If the fuel concentration is either lower than 0.5M or more than 2M, its performance deteriorates seriously because of the fuel starvation or the fuel crossover. In this respect the optimization of the fuel concentration is crucially important to maximize the DMFC stack performance. In this work, the effects of oscillating actuation in the fuel supply are studied to control the fuel concentration. Two important nondimensional parameters are introduced, each of which represents either the oscillating frequency or the oscillating amplitude. It is shown how these factors affect the stack performance and the efficiency of the DMFC stack.
The heat transfer of oscillating flow in a cylinder with regenerator was investigated by the moving boundary technique. The flow in regenerator was modeled by means of Brinkman Forchheimer-Extended-Darcy equation . Results showed that when piston moved toward right, velocity vectors near cylinder wall at left piston and right side of regenerator inclined to symmetric axis and velocity vectors near cylinder wall at right piston and left side of regenerator inclined to cylinder wall. And the time averaged Nusselt number was increased by 46.73% when the oscillatory frequency became twice and decreased by 31.46% when the oscillatory frequency became half. The time averaged Nusselt number was increased by 18.09% when thickness of the regenerator became twice and decreased by 7.53% when thickness of the regenerator became half. But mesh size of regenerator hardly affected the Nusselt number. And efficiency of regenerator was larger as the oscillatory frequency was smaller, thickness and mesh size of regenerator was larger.
Numerical analyses were performed to investigate the characteristics of regenerator in oscillating flow by using moving boundary method and Darcy model. In this work, periodic adiabatic boundary condition was suggested as the boundary condition of adiabatic part so that the effects of the thermal inertia of the wall could be considered. In carrying out numerical analyses, two models were applied and compared. One called isotropic model has the same thermal conductivity in radial and axial directions within a porous media. The other called aeolotropic model has different conductivity in each directions. Isotropic model could not show the advantage of energy reduction which needs to maintain constant wall temperature difference between heater and cooler. But aeolotropic model could simulate the reduction of energy consumption.
The objective of the present study is to investigate the heat storage characteristics of a packed bed according to periodically oscillating flows. Experiments have been performed to measure transient temperature distributions in solid and fluid Phases of the porous media. A simplified analytical model has been developed with intra-particle and dispersion effects neglected, and non-dimensional parameters have been derived. The transient temperature distributions according to the simplified numerical model agree well with the experimental results. Heat storage efficiencies defined in two different ways are obtained for various time periods and face velocities.
