  • This study was performed to determine the whitening effect of organic solvent extracts from the centipede, Scolopendra subspinipes mutilans. We prepared different concentrations (50%, 70% and 100%) of ethanol, methanol, 100% ethyl acetate and water extracts. We tested melanin inhibitory effect and tyrosinase activity using B16/F10 melanoma cell. As a result, treatment of organic solvent extracts is decreased the biosynthesis of melanin and tyrosinase activity to 36 ~ 86%. Especially the 70% ethanol extracts was the most effective in B16/F10 melanoma cells. In the study on melanogenic protein expression, 70% ethanol extracts of Scolopendra subspinipes mutilans blocked glycosylation of tyrosinase. Therefore this result suggests that 70% ethanol extracts could be developed as skin whitening agents.

  • The current movie world is called the era of faction hot-wind by the continuous hits of faction films. The interpretation of the missing 15 days in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty during Gwang-hae's reign based on one sentence in the record makes 'faction' that there was another king, drives audiences to absorption and imagination in the faction film < Gwang-hae: The Man Who Became King >. Furthermore, this film redefined historical king Gwang-hae as an ambivalent image through Gwang-hae and Ha-sun who filled the role as the king in it. Also, this film was appraised by reviews of reinterpretation of the image of leader who people want and hit success when the film released before the season of the presidential election. This thesis considers 'Faction' which is marked as a new image content and analyzes the film < Gwang-hae: The Man Who Became King > which is listed as Korea's all-time sixth highest grossing film with 12,323,555 tickets sold nationwide by three sections; < Gwang-hae: The Man Who Became King > as faction film, two images of Gwang-hae, and the appropriateness of film release time. In conclusion, the film < Gwang-hae: The Man Who Became King >. succeeded since it communicated with people to satisfy their wishes and taste. It would be necessary to study and analyze the basic connection between the trend of movies and Strategic elements of the box-office results, and a significant stride for progression of the movies.

  • There are a few changes about Wangshouren's main tenet during the process of giving lectures. because of the reason that Wangshouren give lectures changed to different disciples, so every student had his different opinion and comprehension do Wangshouren's learning, which is the main reason that Wangshouren's disciples had occurred a difference. In the thinking field of later-Ming, there had occurred a furious argument surrounding the problem of "the Heart is no Goodness and Badness or not", and how to cure the harm of the Xinxue also had become a key issue to the two sides of argument. The donglin school that Guxiancheng was its delegates made a contest with the Xinxue's scholars that Zhourudeng and Guanzhidao were that delegates, which evolved surrounding that issue that "the nature is Good" and "the Heart no Goodness and Badness". In these arguments, the two sides often persist on their own opinions, but hadn't a right understanding for Wangshouren's original meaning. Liujishan and Huanglizhou thought that the meaning of the words "the Heart no Goodness and Badness" was that the Heart have no the intention of Goodness and Badness, not that the Nature was no Goodness and no Badness. So that the opinion of "the Heart no Goodness and Badness" was not the main idea of Wangshouren. Wangji hadn't got the whole meaning of the Four Sentences. Liujishan and Huanglizhou wanted to make a new explaination to Wangshouren's ideas according to literatures and theory.

  • The fairy tale 'The King's Ass's Ears' is a simple story about a king and a barber. The king's 'Ass's ears' is discovered by the barber, who becomes sick due to his inability to reveal the secret. He eventually confesses the secret in a deep pit and covers it with soil, but a reed grows in that spot and reveals the secret when it sways in the wind. This fairy tale is registered in Stith Thompson's narrative type AT 782 as 'King Midas and His Ass's Ears', corresponding to a well-known story of King Gyeongmun in Korea, as it is published in elementary textbooks. When something becomes conscious, its automatic mechanical tendency leads to obsolete and rigid. To avoid rigidity in our conscious life, we need continuous renewal via contact with the flow of mental events in our unconscious. From the aspect of analytical psychology, the King's 'Ass's ears' enables irrational contact with the fundamental emotions lost in the flow of life. The barber symbolizes spiritual transformation, and the reed swaying in the wind symbolizes the revelation of secretive knowledge associated with the divine. The king can hear the sound of all creation and become one with it, which was the will of the divine. The Self, as the psychic totality of an individual and paradoxically also represents the regulating center of the collective unconscious, continually seeks to merge and transform with the lost primal layer of humanity, which has now become distant and discarded due to the development of human consciousness.

  • Distribution analysis on natural habitats for the genus Calanthe in Mt. Halla of Cheju province revealed that C. discolor and C. sieboldii were found mostly in the range of 120~400 m and 300~600 m above the sea level, respectively. C. bicolor was found in 300~400 m where both C. discolor and C. sieboldii were overlapped. The present morphological assessments showed that C. discolor had the smallest sizes of leaves and floral parts, C. had the largest, while C. bicolor had the intermediate between the above mentioned two species. Flower colors of C. discolor were brownish red and simple white, and that of C. sieboldii was merely golden yellow, whereas C. bicolor had a diverse mixed colors originated from the other two species. The specific distribution of natural habitats and morphological characteristics of three Calanthe species led the suggestion that C. bicolor can be regarded as new species derived originally from natural hybridization between C. discolor and C. sieboldii.

  • This study was investigated quantitative and objective making techniques for molding clay of Four-guardian statues in Songgwangsa temple. Also, basic data about the provenance of molding clay was acquired for the restoration using same materials when the conservation treatment is carried out. As a result, molding clay used the Four-guardian statues was identified the very similar soil regardless of layers and objects. But molding clay differed in particle sizes and contents of organic matters according to the first layer to finish layer in relatively thick parts. Also, it was used one kind of soil without the layer distinction in thin parts. The restoration soil was applied to genetically similar soil as molding clay of the Four-guardian statues, and showed a difference of careful selection degree according to the layers. As a result of the provenance interpretation, the soil distributing presumed provenance was confirmed the same origin as molding clay. Therefore, the soil is appropriate for the materials of conservation treatment. This result will contribute inorganic material research and conservation treatment for the clay molded Four-guardian statues in Korea.

  • The anticancer properties of Scolopendra subspinipes mutilans extract were investigated. The extract from S. subspinipes mutilans by 80% EtOH was fractionated with n-hexane, dichloromethan ($CH_2Cl_2$), ethylacetate (EtOAc), and butanol (BuOH) in order. The EtOAc fraction showed the highest inhibitory activity (about 80%) against human leukemia (HL-60) cell growth at $50\;{\mu}g/mL$. To explore the mechanism of cytotoxicity, we used several measures of apoptosis to determine whether these processes were involved in EtOAc fraction-induced HL-60 cell death. Our results showed EtOAc fraction induced cell shrinkage, cell membrane blebbing, apoptotic body, and DNA fragmentation. The EtOAc fraction gradually decreased the expression of anti-apoptotic Bcl-xL and led to the activation of caspase-3, -9 and cleavage of PARP. These findings suggest that S. subspinipes mutilans exhibits potential anticancer properties.

  • The aims of this study are to clarify the geomorphological development of a alluvial plain and discuss the vegetation environments and agriculture activities in the Wangpo-River alluvial plain at Neungsan-ri, Buyeo by analyzing geomorphological classification, sedimentary facies and age datings. The alluvial plain at Wangpo-River was formed by the influences of Geum-River with the sea-level rising during the Holocene. The basin of Wangpo-River consists of natural levees, back marsh-type alluvial plains, valley plains and hills. The natural levees by Geum-River largely distributes at the area where Wangpo-River flows to Geum-River and the alluvial plains at the middle and lower reach are the back marsh areas of Geum-River. Moreover, the area along Wangpo-River show higher contents of coarse materials and thinner peat sediments than the back marsh. The lower sandy deposits in the alluvium of Wangpo-River was formed with the influences of human in the Bronze Age during the sea level falling and the peaty deposits was formed due to the water level rising of Wangpo-River during the sea level rising in the early Iron Age.

  • This study was performed to examine whether it is possible to promote rice growth by midsummer drainage without damage of golden apple snails in environment-friendly rice farming. The effect of drainage on the life of snails was examined in a greenhouse before the filed experiment. Spats (young shells) of snails survived 100% at 12 days after drainage, and 93.3% at 15 days after drainage. The midsized shells survived 100% at 9 days, 93.3% at 12 days, and 86.6% at 15 days after drainage. In the field experiment, 10-days drainage did not affect the snail population and there was no significant difference of weeding activity of snails between the midsummer drainage treatment and the continuous submerged treatment. The plant height and the effective tiller number in the midsummer drainage treatment were higher than those of the continuous submerged treatment. The rice yield of midsummer drainage plot was 511kg/10a, which was 66kg/10a higher than 445kg/10a of continuous submerged plot. In conclusion, midsummer drainage could increase rice growth and yield without damage of golden apple snails in the environment-friendly rice farming.

  • The golden apple snail-Pomacea canaliculata was an alien species and introduced into Korea as table use in 1983. This species is possible pest in direct seeded rice paddy in Korea. We investigated the effects of this exotic snail on the macrophytes and the water quality in water canal. Also, the basic life cycle of this species and the overwintering ecology in Chungnam and Jeonbuk province were elucidated. A survey of natural water canal in Korea showed that high densities of the snail were associated with absences of macrophytes-Hydrilla verticillata, Ceratophyllum demersum, Spirodela polyrhiza and Lemna perpusilla. Experiments in water tank also demonstrated that the golden apple snail can cause the loss of macrophytes, and increase the EC(Electric conductivity), COD(Chemical oxygen demand), T-N(Total nitrogen) and T-P(Total phosphorus) in water.
