  • In this paper a numerical analysis method for eddy current testing (ECT) with axisymmetric crack is studied. The finite element method(FEM) is used for electromagnetic solution. In this paper the outer diameter crack of INCONEL 600 tube is modelled and the impedance signal is obtained using the differential probe. The characteristics of the crack depth variation in the signal are analyzed.

  • Nuclear steam generator tubes have experienced wear degradation at tube support structure. Morphology of wear scar was analyzed by using eddy current signal. A burst test facility for steam generator tubes was established and tubes with 3 types of defects were tested. The burst test results show that the depth of wear scar is the main factor influencing the burst pressure of tubes, meanwhile, both the longitudinal length and the angle also have effect on the burst pressure. Based on test results, the burst pressure equation for wear degradation was proposed.

  • This paper presents a numerical analysis of the eddy current testing with cracked pipe using finite element method (FEM). ${\vec{A}},\;{\phi}-{\vec{A}}$ method is adopted for the formulation of 3-dimensional(3-D) FEM with the brick element. The cracks investigated here are the inner and outer surface of axial symmetry, 90 degree circular one. The algorithm of 3-D numerical analysis is employed for the axisymmetric pipe with the cracks. In order to verify the validity of 3-D numerical analysis, the results are compared with those of 2-D analysis with the same type of the model. The differential impedance is obtained by using energy method and its locus are various 8-shaped curves for each cracks. The ICCG method is used for the calculation of a matrix.

  • In this paper, characteristic analysis of PC(Pancake Coil) probe with the size variation is presented for eddy current testing. Characteristics of probe are numerically calculated by using the finite element method. From the numerical analysis, the optimum frequency and groups for an experiment are selected. Probes are made and experiment is performed. From the experimental results, the probe shows maximum sensitivity when the size of defect is equal to the size of probe and when the inside diameter is similar to the width of probe and when the height is low. The result can be helpful to the standard of design of PC probe for eddy current testing.

  • In this paper, the analysis of the eddy current testing(ECT) signals under thc Influence of the ferromagnetic support plate was performed in steam generator(SG) tube of nuclear power plant. In order to remove the influence of the ferromagnetic support plate, a multi-frequency ECT was used. The models which was established for the analysis of the signals is calculated using numerical analysis of finite element method. Through the result of numerical analysis, improved signals is acquired considering the influence of the ferromagnetic support plate using mixing of multi-frequency This paper is presented the residual errors and the phase changes for analysis of the defect signals which should be considered when conducting a ECT using multi-frequency.

  • Signals captured from a Combo calibration standard tube paly a crucial role in the evaluation of motorized rotating pancake coil (MRPC) probe signals from steam generator (SG) tubes in nuclear power plants (NPPs). Therefore, the Combo tube signals should be consistent and accurate. However, MRPC probe signals are very easily affected by various factors around the tubes so that they can be distorted in their amplitudes and phase angles which are the values specifically used in the evaluation. To overcome this problem, in this study, we explored possibility of simulation to be used as a practical calibration tool far the evaluation of real field signals. For this purpose, we investigated the characteristics of a MRPC probe and a Combo tube. And then using commercial software (VIC-3D) we simulated a set of calibration signals and compared to the experimental signals. From this comparison, we verified the accuracy of the simulated signals. Finally, we evaluated two defects using the simulated Combo tube signals, and the results were compared with those obtained using the actual field calibration signals.

  • This study suggests a rebar detection technique for simultaneous detection of size and cover of embedded reinforcement in concrete. The structure of the probe made in this study is somewhat different from commercial ones. This probe has three sensing coils. Rebar size and cover depth can be evaluated by detecting and analyzing the signal from them. Amplitude and phase variation of each coil in the probe was investigated using an impedance analyzer and the loci of transfer functions of the coils were analyzed. The locus of transfer function from the sensing coil positioned inside excitation coil was simple as well known, but the others from the coils outside excitation coil were not so. Actual experiment on rebar detection was performed with our probe and an eddy current test system for various rebar sizes and depths. The signal shape according to variation of cover depths showed the same tendency with the transfer function loci acquired by impedance analyzer. The different variation pattern of signal enabled to evaluate rebar size and cover depth simultaneously.

  • A new ECT probe to separate the ECT signal distortion due to PVC (permeability variation clusters) and ordinary defects created in SG tubes has been developed. The hystersis loops of PVC which are extracted from retired SG (steam generator) tubes of Kori-1 NNP were measured. The tensile tests were performed to identify the mechanism of PVC creation. The conditions detecting the PVC created in 56 tubes were investigated using computer simulation, and the signal processing circuits were inserted in the probe for the digital signal transmission. The new Probe can measure and separate the PVC signal which is created in the SG tubes, and also measures the defects in Ni-sleeving part of SG tubes. furthermore the new ECT probe can measure the defects as fast as bobbin probe, and enhance the testing speed as well as reliability of the defect detection of SG tubes.

  • As the increase of the operation year of nuclear power plants, the probabilities of the degradation of the major facilities and materials in the nuclear power plants are increased. The integrity of those facilities shall be monitored and verified by the non-destructive examination methods with the regulation codes, so called inservice inspection(ISI). The ISI of Yonggwang unit 6 was performed in four different parts, 1) non-destructive examinations for the components, piping weldments and structures, 2) automated ultrasonic examinations for pressure vessels, 3) visual examinations for the interior structures of the reactor, 4) eddy current examinations for the steam generator tubes. As the results, there was no severe indication and all detected indications were evaluated as non-relavent. Especially for the examinations of the piping weldments, PD(Performance Demonstration) was applied as a W examination method defined in the 1995 edition of ASME Code Sec. XI. The implementation of the PD for the piping weld results in an improvement of the reliability of the UT examinations.

  • This paper aims to compare the ability to detect notch defects existing in the plate and welded area using a flexible ECA (eddy current array) probe with OmniScan MX and MS-5800E. The characteristics of signals with various frequencies and lift-offs were also compared. As a result, when signals of frequencies 500, 1000, and 1500 kHz were used, the amplitude of the signal increased, as the depth of the notch increased, but reduced linearly in accordance with the lift-off variation. In addition, the detection sensitivity of the weld defect was found to be closely related to the contact surface of the probe and specimen. In this paper, it was demonstrated that the detection sensitivity was excellent when the contact surface of the probe and the specimen was sufficient, but it was poor when the contact surface was insufficient.
