  • This study was aimed to investigate the effect of air-circulation fans on air temperature and relative humidity in a single-span tomato greenhouse (W: 7m, L: 25m, H: 3.2m). According to standard of fan layout by ASAE (1997), a total of 10 fans were bilaterally arranged in 2 rows in the experimental greenhouse. The distributions of air temperature and relative humidity were measured from 6 pm to 8 am under different conditions, with and without fans. The measurement heights were 0.7m, 1.7m and 2.7m. Under the condition of "fans off", the spatial differences of air temperature and relative humidity between upper and lower sides were $1.7^{\circ}C$ and 10.8%, respectively. The operation of 10 fans showed their differences to $0.1^{\circ}C$ and 3.2%. The number of fans and installation direction were evaluated their performance on reducing the spatial variation of air temperature and relative humidity. The experimental layouts were 5 and fans in 2 rows (bilaterally) and 10 fans in the one (same) direction. Under the condition of "6 fans on" and "5 fans on", the spatial differences of air temperature and relative humidity between upper and lower side were $0.3^{\circ}C$, 3.4% and $0.3^{\circ}C$ and 4.0%. The operation of 10 fans in the one direction reduced their differences to $0.5^{\circ}C$ and 4.9%. The overall findings of this study showed that there was no significant differences under each condition. Therefore, this study suggested that it is more economic and effective to install five fans in 2 rows (bilaterally) in the greenhouse (W: 7m, L: 25m, H: 3.2m).

  • This study was conducted to predict the effect of door opening in wooden cultural heritages (WCHs) on their conservation environment. For this prediction, measured relative humidity (RH) and surface wood moisture content (MC) of inner part of wood columns in open wooden building and neighboring closed wooden building were compared with minimum RH, including the duration of minimum RH, and MC required for spore germination and resultant growth of wood-degrading fungi reported in some literatures. Moisture conditions, namely RH of inside wooden building and MC of wood was unsuitable for decay and sap-stain fungi all the year round; however, moisture conditions during summer season was suitable for spore germination and resultant growth of surface mold fungi, regardless of door opening. When compared, the duration of minimum (75%) or higher RH and the number of wood columns with MC level greater than the minimum MC (15%) during summer season, the surface mold related to the conservation environment of inside wooden building was somewhat better in open building than in closed building. Rather, doors should be opened in closed building for reducing indoor RH as a necessary measure during summer season when outdoor RH is high.

  • The impact of climate change on agriculture is substantial, especially as global warming is projected to lead to varying temperature and humidity patterns in the future. These changes pose a higher risk for both crops and livestock, exposing them to environmental stressors under altered climatic conditions. Specifically, as temperatures are expected to rise, the risk of heat stress is assessable through the Temperature-Humidity Index (THI), derived from temperature and relative humidity data. This study involved the comparison of THI collected from 10 Korea Meteorological Administration ASOS stations spanning a 60-year period from 1961 to 2020. Moreover, high-resolution temperature and humidity distribution data from 1981 to 2020 were employed to generate high-resolution TH I distributions, analyzing temporal changes. Additionally, the number of days characterized by heat stress, derived from TH I, was compared over different time periods. Generally, TH I showed an upward trend over the past, albeit with varying rates across different locations. As TH I increased, the frequency of heat stress days also rose, indicating potential future cost increases in the livestock industry due to heat-related challenges. The findings emphasize the feasibility of evaluating heat stress risk in livestock using THI and underscore the need for research analyzing THI under future climate change scenarios.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of side vent heights on temperature and relative humidity inside and outside the single-span plastic greenhouse (W: 7 m, L: 40 m H: 3.9 m) during natural ventilation. Four different heights (120, 100, 80, 60 cm) of the side vent were used as an experimental condition. Variations of temperature and relative humidity inside and outside the greenhouse and the differences between heights were compared by using one-way ANOVA. In the daytime, the difference in temperature between inside and outside the greenhouse was dropped from 14.0℃ to 7.1℃ as the side vent height increased. The temperature difference in the nighttime was less than 0.2℃ regardless of the height. One-way ANOVA on the temperature difference between heights presented that the statistical significance was founded between all of the combinations of height in the daytime. The difference in relative humidity between inside and outside the greenhouse was grown from -13.8% to -22.2% with a decrease in the side vent height. The humidity difference in the nighttime was less than 1% regardless of the height. One-way ANOVA on the humidity difference revealed that most of the side vent heights showed significance in the daytime but between 100 and 80 cm was not significant. It seemed because the external air became cooler during the experiment with a height of 80 cm. Conclusively, this study empirically demonstrated that the higher side vents resulted in the decrease of differences in temperature and relative humidity between inside and outside the greenhouse, and also the effect of side vent height was statistically significant. This study may be helpful for deciding the height of the side vent effective for controlling temperature and relative humidity in a single-span greenhouse during natural ventilation.

  • Bypass air conditioning systems are divided into three types; outdoor air bypass, mixed air bypass and return air bypass system. Among bypass air conditioning systems, a return air bypass system is more effective than other two systems because it doesn't induce unconditioned outdoor air into conditioned room. The numerical study on the bypass air conditioning system shows this system can maintain indoor RH(Relative Humidity) less than a conventional CAV (Constant Air Volume) air conditioning system by adjusting face and bypass dampers at part load. A simulator was built to compare results of a numerical experiment and those of a simulator experiment. The results of the simulator experiment was nearly same as those of the numerical experiment; when a design sensible load (the ratio of sensible load to total sensible load) was 70 percent (at this time, RSHF=0.7), indoor relative humidity (in case of both numerical experiments and simulator experiments) was maintained below 60% specified by ASHRAE STANDARD 62-1999. The bypass air conditioning system is expected to be applied to many buildings where the Percentage of latent loads or air change tate is high.

  • At the limited space, the air conditioning may have difficult to control temperature or humidity for home use. Nowdays, the people reponse to temperature or humidity sensitively. This becomes the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is an important factor for comfortably. Heat recovery ventilator (HRV) is used for the solution of inconsistency between IAQ and power-saving. Also, the thermoelectric element is applied to HRV and compared with temperature efficiency and verifying the capacity of the system. To improve the temperature efficiency a single motor and thermoelectric element with the conductive guide vane is experimented. The results shows that it can save 23 W by using the single motor. The developed system of 250 CMH capacities with the thermoelectric element reveals the temperature efficiency improvement of 4.01% in cooling period and 2.98% in heating period compared to the conventional system.
