  • This paper summarizes the design concepts and implementation of a Ku-band channel amplifier's engineering model for the communication and broadcasting satellite applications. The selected architecture uses the analog gain control for the FGM(Fixed Gain Mode) and the output level limiting using automatic loop control for the ALC (automatic level control) mode. The Ku-band channel amplifier incorporates several state-of-the-art components including voltage-controlled PIN diode attenuators, and various temperature-compensation circuits. The measured characteristics of the Ku-band channel amplifier are in good agreement with the expected performance. The results show a fixed gain control of 28 dB, and an automatic level control of 16 dB over operating temperature range. The designed engineering model could be used as a channel amplifier for Ku-band communication and broadcasting satellite payload system.

  • Compact fluorescent lamps are very sensitive to the variation of ambient temperature. This paper investigates the temperature characteristics of a 15[W] compact fluorescent lamp, and compensates the variation of light output by frequency control of its electronic ballast. Circuit parameters for the inverter of the electronic ballast are obtained by analyzing the R-L-C equivalent circuit for the inverter and the lamp. The optimum ratio of the two capacitance($C_1$/$C_2$), which are connected with the lamp in series and in parallel, respectively, is determined which consideration of the temperature variation within a range of 10~35[$^{\circ}C$]. As a result a value of 10 for the ratio is obtained at an operating frequency of 57[kHz], and with this value the frequency control works well for temperature compensation. Its validity is verified by investigating light output stabilization characteristics resulting from frequency control of the lamp at various temperatures.

  • Reactive mesogens were used to prepare photo-cured liquid crystal films in which orientations of liquid crystal molecules were preserved by crosslinked networks of cured reactive mesogens. The molecular orientations of liquid crystal mixtures of photo-reative mesogens and non-reactive nematic liquid crystals were studied and compared before and after curing reactions. The effects of temperature and the amount of the non-reactive nematic liquid crystal in the mixture on birefringence of the liquid crystal films were investigated. It was found that optical compensation films with different birefringence could be prepared by controlling the amount of the nematic liquid crystals in the reactive mesogen mixtures.

  • Total 12 units of high power klystron-modulator systems as microwave source is under operation for 2.5-GeV electron linear accelerator in Pohang Light Source(PLS) linac. RF power and beam power of klystron are precisely measured for the effective control of electron beam. A precise measurement and measurement equipment with good response characteristics are required for this. Input power of klystron is calculated from the applied voltage and the current on its cathode. Tiny measurement error severely effects RF output power value of klystron. Therefore, special care is needed to measure precise beam voltage. Capacitive voltage divider(CVD) unit is intended for the measurement of beam voltage of 400 kV generated from the pulsed klystron-modulator system. Main parameter to determine the standard capacitance in the high arm of CVD is dielectric constant of insulation oil. Therefore CVD should be designed to have a minimum capacitance variation due to voltage, frequency and temperature in the measurement range. This paper will discuss the analysis of capacitive voltage divider for a pulsed high-voltage measurement, and the empirical relations between capacitance and oil temperature variation.

  • Pressure sensors are used in various industries such as automobiles, airplanes, medical equipment, and coolers. Even if the ambient temperature changes, the measurement is reliable and stable. In this study a diaphragm-type pressure sensor was used to derive a temperature-compensated pressure estimation equation for accurate pressure measurement at $100^{\circ}C$ and $-40^{\circ}C$. To understand the characteristics of the pressure sensor diaphragm with respect to temperature and pressure, experiments were conducted in temperature-variable chamber using FEM analysis to confirm that the influence of temperature effect was nonlinear. Based on the experimental results, a nonlinear method for calculating the pressure by compensating for the error due to temperature was derived. The calculated pressure value is lower than 0.5 % at low and high temperatures, and lower than 0.4 % at $22^{\circ}C$, thereby eliminating the effect of temperature.

  • This study was carried out to know the effect of temperature, light intensity and $CO_2$ concentration on photosynthesis and respiration in Wasabi (Wasabia japonica Matsum). The optimum temperature for photosynthesis in Wasabi was $17{\sim}20^{\circ}C$ and dark respiration rate was increased with the increasing of temperature from, $15 ^{\circ}C\;to\;30^{\circ}C$. Light compensation point was $6.0\;{\mu}E\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$ in Wasabi and $36.7\;{\mu}E\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$ in Corn, and light saturation point was $600{\mu}E\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$, similar in Wasabi and Corn. $CO_2$, compensation point was 67.3ppm in Wasabi and 11.6 ppm in Corn. Photorespiration rate in Wasabi leaf at $l000{\mu}E\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$ light intensity was 3.3 mg$CO_2$, $dm^{-2}hr^{-1}$, and then was gradually decreased as light intensity decreased. Stomatal frequency was about $76\;mm^{-2}$ on the adaxial surface and $623\;mm^{-2}$ on the abaxial surface, and the size of stomata was about 1$12{\mu}m$ on the adaxial surface and $17{\mu}m$ on the abaxial surface of the leaf.

  • Gross photosynthetic rats of leaves of hydroponically grown cucumber plants(Cucumis sativus L. cv. Guwoosalichungjang) were measured under various conditions of photosynthetic photon flux(PPF), ambient $CO_2$ concentration, air temperature and leaf nitrogen contents. Light compensation point of leaf photosynthesis appeared to be in the range of 10~20$\mu$mol.m$^{-2}$ .s$^{-1}$ and light saturation point be above 1000$\mu$mol.m$^{-2}$ .s$^{-1}$ . Gross photosynthetic rates increased persistently and asymptotically as air temperature rose from 12$^{\circ}C$ to 32$^{\circ}C$. However, there were only small differences in gross photosynthetic rates in the range of 24-32$^{\circ}C$, so that the range seemed to be optimal for photosynthesis of cucumber plants at the condition of $CO_2$ concentration of 400$\mu$mol.mol$^{-1}$ and PPF of around 400$\mu$mol.m$^{-2}$ .s$^{-1}$ . $CO_2$ compensation point of leaf photosynthesis appeared to be in the range of 20-40$\mu$mol.mol$^{-1}$ and $CO_2$ saturation point be above 1200$\mu$mol.mol$^{-1}$ . Gross photosynthetic rates increased sigmoidally as leaf nitrogen content increased. These environmental factors interacted synergistically to enhance gross photosynthetic rate, so that the rate increased multiplicatively s level of one factor increased progressively with higher levels of he other factors. Mathematical models wer developed to estimate the gross photosynthetic rate in accordance with the variations of these environmental factors. These modes can be used not only to explain he variation of growth or yield of cucumber plants under different environmental conditions but also as building blocks of plant growth model or expert system of cucumber plants.
