The aim of this study was to compare crop contamination between two irrigation methods using microbial-contaminated water. The effect of relative humidity on microbial survival of the three indicator microorganisms was also investigated. Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Clostridium perfringens ATCC 3624, and coliphage PRD1 were applied to irrigation water to grow cantaloupe, lettuce, and bell pepper. Half of the sixteen plots were subsurface drip irrigated (SDI) and the other half were furrow irrigated (FI). Two relative humidity levels were controlled at 15-65 % and 55-80 % for the dry and humid condition experiments, respectively. Samples of produce, surface soil, and subsurface soil at a depth of 10 cm were collected over a two-week period following the application of the study microorganisms. Overall, greater contamination of both produce and soil occurred in the FI plots. For the SDI plots, preferential water paths and resulting water appearance on the seed beds seemed to be responsible for produce contamination. Relative humidity levels did not appear to affect microbial survival in soil. PRD 1 showed lower inactivation rates than 5. coli in both dry and humid conditions. C. perfringens did not experience significant inactivation over the experimental period, suggesting this microorganism can be an effective indicator of fecal contamination.

Electrical surveys were conducted at the Seokdae waste landfill in July,1996. Within the landfill, 4 lines of dipole-dipole surveys and 7 Schlumberger soundings were carried out and 2 soundings in front of the landfill. In the landfill, interpretations of the survey data show low resistivity zones below 10 Ωm to a depth of 50 m from the surface and such low resistivity zones of the D block are thicker than those of the other blocks by about 2~10 m. Considering the depth of the bedrock and the height of waste reclamation, no evidence of bedrock contamination by leachate is indicated. But it is inferred that the weathered zones are contaminated in the landfill. In the block A and B, minor fault having the strike of N$70^{\circ}$W have been confirmed by dipole-dipole surveys, so future contamination of the bedrock by leachate is possible The degree of ground contamination is the highest in the D block due to the leachate plume mainly heading for this block. On the other hand, electrical soundings do not indicate ground contamination by leachate in the front area of the landfill.
This study proves that syringe reuse of automated injection system entails a risk of contrast media reflux and saline solution contamination which are pumped by a piston into the patients' venous cannula in the dynamic MR images, we will be aware of the serious problem. To quantify the contrast media contamination effect on the saline solution, identical volume of the saline solution was collected before and after the contrast injection to the patients' venous cannula following T1 weighted image scanning to verify whether signal intensities differences are observed. The signal intensity of saline solution after the contrast injection was significantly higher than that of saline before injection by 523.43%. This result is due to the backflow that contaminates the saline solution on the opposite side when the contrast agent is injected. In conclusion, the syringe used to inject contrast medium. causes cross-contamination due to contrast reflux. Therefore, even if the same patient's examination is used for quantitative analysis, the error should be avoided by changing the acquisition sequence or replacing the syringe.
Contamination of aflatoxins(AFs) was monitored in 447 compound feeds and 138 feed ingredients samples distributed in South KOREA in 2006 and 2007. The degree of $AFB_1\;and\;AFB_2$ contamination in compound feed was 20% and 3%, respectively. The levels of detection were ranged from 0.48 to 10.46 ppb for $AFB_1$ and from 0.25 to 0,42 ppb for $AFB_2$. Thirty eight percent of compound feeds were contaminated with $AFB_1$ at concentration between 0.43 and 5.52 ppb and $AFB_2$ was detected in 2% of compound feeds at levels ranging 0.26-0.40 ppb. The highest degree of $AFB_1$ contamination was observed in compound feeds for beef cattle (75%) followed by for dairy cattle (72%) and in bran among feed ingredients (30%). Bran exhibited the highest level of $AFB_1$contamination (3.1 ppb). Vegetable proteins and compound feeds for dog showed relative lower degree of contamination at 2.9 and 1.9 ppb, respectively. $AFG_1\;and\;AFG_2$ were not detected in any compound feeds and feed ingredients samples.

In order to understand the extent of contamination of the sediments on the Mankyoung and Dongjin Rivers flowing into the Saemangeum Reservoir, the concentrations of ignition loss (IL), COD, total nitrogen (T-N), total phosphorus (T-P), and heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Pb, Zn) were measured. The average concentrations of IL, COD, and T-P were 2.40 (${\pm}2.18$)%, 2.97 (${\pm}3.06$) mg/g sediment, 0.370 (${\pm}0.351$) mg/g sediment, respectively, showing the extent of contamination is not serious. However, the concentrations of these parameters in the samples taken in year 2009 were higher than those in year 2008, indicating the contamination of sediments goes on gradually. The concentrations of T-N were in the range of 0.59~13.11 mg/g sediment with variation of locations and seasons. It was determined that the T-N contamination is serious when the concentrations were compared with the dredging guidelines of sediments in the Korean freshwaters, indicating the countermeasures are required to maintain the water quality of the Saemangeum Reservoir. The concentrations of heavy metals except chromium did not exceed the worrisome level of soil contamination stipulated by the Soil Environment Conservation Act of Korea. The high concentration of chromium to be concerned in some samples from the upstream of Mankyoung River requires source analysis and countermeasure to control the contamination.
Many atmospheric pollutants including chemical agents, house dust, and microorganisms cause building-related illnesses through respiration in humans. This study was conducted to analyze the profiles of microbial pollutants in air purifiers used in home, office and playschool. Dominant eleven species of microorganisms were isolated and identified in environmental air and air purifiers. Among them, Staphylococcus sp., Micrococcus sp. and Bacillus sp. are the most dominant species. By phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene, the dominant bacteria were identified as Staphylococcus epidermidis, Micrococcus luteus and Bacillus epidermidis, respectively. It has been known that these bacterial species are closely related with food spoilage and human infectious disease. Thus, these results indicate that microbial pathogens related with human illnesses through respiration will be contaminated in air purifiers and also need to develop a method to control those of pathogens for human health.
Rn-222 was used as a natural radioactive isotope tracer to evaluate non-aqueous phase liquid(NAPL) contaminated soil and aquifer. In the case of soil sample, Rn-222 concentration was inversely decreased with diesel concentration in the granite soil sample and it was decreased about 30% at the 13% diesel contaminated soil. For evaluating trichloroethylene (TCE) contaminated aquifer, the natural radioisotope Rn-222 was used as naturally occurring partitioning tracer for the approximate localization and semiquantitative assessment of the TCE source zone. Rn-222 was analyzed for the estimation of TCE contamination ranges of the acquifer in the contaminated site at Wonju in Korea.

Among many methods in solving the organic contamination in the reverse osmosis operation, caustic soda (NaOH) wash method is efficient and commercially affordable. In continuation of our many organic pollution removal works, this study focused mainly on caustic soda wash with micro-bubble to removal the organic contamination of the spent membrane from reverse osmosis process. First, the membrane was forced the pollute using known organic pollutants such as Humic acid, Bovine serum albumin, Sodium alginate drug. The organic contamination on the membrane was monitored flux. The decontamination of organic contaminants was derived flux variation at individual caustic soda was injected micro-bubble methods and combined method as well. the found results explain removal of organic contaminants effective only by combined caustic soda wash with micro-bubble methods.
Railway-contaminated soil is categorized by total petroleum hydrocarbon(TPH)-related contamination and heavy-metal contamination. The sources of TPH are diesel and lubricant. In this study, the feasibility of soil washing, chemical oxidation and ultra-sonication were investigated to treat lubricant-contaminated railway soil. tergitol, a non-ionic surfactant, was investigated as a washing agent. However, it is not effective to remove lubricant from soil even though tergitol is most effective washing agent for diesel-contaminated soil. Addition of alcohols with surfactant enhanced slightly washing efficiency of the lubricant-contaminated soil. To remediate railway-contaminated soil, source of pollution should be considered.

It is muck important to determine the intercepting capacities as measures for reducing the load of contamination influenced by CSOs during wet weather period. Intercepting and treating the whole rainfalls can be best measured for reducing the contamination load, but it is not desirable in view of scale and preservation of the wastewater treatment facilities. This study analyzed the quantity and quality of the water in the combined sewer by method of changing the type and size of drainage basin and intercepting capacities in rainfalls, estimate the influence the other CSOs at the change of planned intercepted quantity, and compared the degree of contamination load between the combined system and separate system by examining the influence of the other CSOs at the change of planned intercepted quantity.
