  • A flywheel-driven rapid compression and expansion machine is developed and utilized for experimental study of homogeneous charge compression ignition combustion. Compression ignition of homogeneous charge in IC engines offers possibilities of realizing ultra-lean engine operation with greatly reduced NOx and particulate formation. Fundamental investigations are carried out in order to better understand this ideal engine combustion mechanism. Perfectly premixed propane-air mixtures of various equivalence ratio are compression-ignited in the rapid compression and expansion machine, and the characteristics of the auto-ignition and the following combustion process are analyzed.

  • A homogeneous premixed charge compression ignition engine is experimentally investigated for the reduction of exhaust emissions in diesel engines. In this study, the premixed fuel is injected into the intake manifold to form homogeneous pre-mixture in the combustion chamber and then this pre-mixture is ignited by small amount of diesel fuel directly injected into the cylinder. In the premixed charge compression ignition engine, NOx and smoke concentration of the exhaust emissions were reduced simultaneously as compared with the conventional diesel engine. But HC and CO emissions were increased with the increase of premixed ratio. The combustion characteristics of premixed charged diesel engine such as the power output, the rate of heat release, and the other characteristics are discussed.

In this study, the premixed fuel is injected into the intake manifold to form homogeneous pre-mixture in the combustion chamber and then this pre-mixture is ignited by small amount of diesel fuel directly injected into the cylinder. In the premixed charge compression ignition engine, NOx and smoke concentrations of the exhaust emissions were reduced simultaneously as compared with the conventional diesel engine. But HC emission was increased with the increase of premixed ratio. Also, when EGR system was applied to the PCCI diesel engine, the effect of EGR rate on the combustion characteristics and the exhaust gas emissions was discussed.

LPG-DME 성층혼합 압축착화 엔진 (LPG-DME Stratified Charge Compression Ignition Engine)

  • The combustion characteristics of a liquefied petroleum gas-di-methyl ether (LPG-DME) compression ignition engine was investigated under homogeneous charge and stratified charge conditions. LPG was used as the main fuel and injected into the combustion chamber directly. DME was used as an ignition promoter and injected into the intake port. Different LPG injection timings were tested to verify the combustion characteristics of the LPG-DME compression ignition engine. The combustion was divided into three region which are homogeneous charge, stratified charge, and diffusion flame region according to the injection timing of LPG. The hydrocarbon emission of stratified charge combustion was lower than that of homogeneous charge combustion. However, the carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide emission of stratified charge combustion were slightly higher than those of the homogeneous charge region. The indicated mean effective pressure was reduced at stratified charge region, while it was almost same level as the homogeneous charge combustion region at diffusion combustion region. The start of combustion timing of the stratified charge combustion and diffusion combustion region were advanced compared to the homogeneous charge combustion. It attributed to the higher cetane number and mixture temperature distribution which locally stratified. However, the knock intensity was varied as the homogeneity of charge was increased.

  • Combustion characteristics of diesel engine depends on mixture formation process during Ignition delay and premixed flame region. Fuel and air mixture formation has a great influence on the exhaust emission. Therefore, the present study focused on the combustion mechanism of Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) engine. This study was carried out to investigate the combustion characteristics of direct injection type HCCI engine using a visualization engine. To investigate the combustion characteristics, we measured cylinder pressure and calculated heat release rate. In addition, we investigated the flame development process by using visualization engine system. From the experimental result of HCCI engine, we observed that cool flame was always appeared in HCCI combustion and magnitude of cool flame was proportional to magnitude of hot flame. And we also found that fuel injection timing is more effective to increase lean homogeneous combustion performance than intake air temperature. Since increasing the intake air temperature improved fuel vaporization before the fuel atomizes, we concluded that increasing the temperature has disadvantage fur homogeneous premixed combustion.

  • As the exhaustion of petroleum resources and air pollution problems are getting serious recently, there are growing interests in premixed diesel engines which have the potential of achieving a more homogeneous mixture near TDC compared to conventional diesel engines. Early studies have shown that the fuel injection frequency and spray angle affected the mixture formation and combustion in a HCCI(Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition) engine. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between combustion and mixture formations by injection timing and frequency using a narrow angle injector, NADI (Narrow Angle Direct Injection). In this study, we found that the fuel injection timing and injection frequency affect the mixture formations and then affect combustion in the HCCI engine.

  • A diesel engine has various merits such as high thermal-efficiency, superior fuel consumption and durability. Therefore the number of diesel engine in the world is increasing. As the seriousness of environmental pollution increases in the world, the method to reduce the noxious materials of $CO_2$, NOx and P.M. is very important subject to correspond to exhaust gas regulations. A new concept, so called premixed charge diesel combustion(PCCI), is focused among the various corresponding manners. In this study, we investigated the mixture formation within the cylinder with injection timing using GTT simulation code and also compared combustion characteristics of PCCI engine with that of commercial diesel engine. From this experiments, it could be found that homogeneous mixture formation was observed according to advance of injection timing and simultaneous reduction of NOx and Soot in injection timing of BTDC 60$^{\circ}$.
