  • The main purpose of this study was to investigate the elements which influence the symbolic consumption in clothing. Materialism and agent of socialization have been studied and the affect of these two are also developed. The theoretical study and survey methods were used. The survey was administered to 426 women in their twenties living in Seoul and Kyungki region. SPSS packages were applied to find out the results of ANOVA Duncans multiple range tests, means, standard deviation, factor analysis, and regression analysis. The major findings of this study could be summerized as follows; First, the subordinate parts of symbolic consumption was divided into these three parts; fashion oriented consumption, brand oriented consumption, hedonic consumption. The average of hedonic consumption was higher than other subordinate parts of symbolic consumption. Second, symbolic consumption was seemed to have the differences according to materialism and its subfactors. The higher materialism indicated, the higher symbolic consumption was. Third, symbolic consumption was proven to have the differences according to agent of socialization such as reference group and mass media. The higher the influence of the reference group and mass media was, the higher symbolic consumption was. Fourth, according to the results of the regression analysis examing the relative influences of variables affecting symbolic consumption in clothing, the influence of the reference group was the most important variable. The influence of mass media and materialism was related positively to the symbolic consumption.

  • With the economical data service delivery, the packet transport network (PTN) technologies have emerged as an important player in the next-generation transport networks. As the PTN continues to make such considerable progress, it is being challenged by network providers who need rapid and reliable recovery capabilities to guarantee the availability of their services. This paper introduces several fault detection mechanisms for a client signal failure in packet transport networks and proposes a reliable transmission method of IP flows from routers using the combination of Ethernet services. Based on the first fault detection methods, client signal fault is detected within tens or hundreds of milliseconds. It enables the client network devices to perform their own recovery processes within one second. The second mechanism enables failed Ethernet services to be bypassed via other Ethernet services over disjoint paths, so as to contribute on reducing packet loss of IP traffic.

  • Objectives Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic and disabling psychiatric disorder. The duration of untreated illness (DUI) has been suggested as one of the predictors of clinical course and outcome in various psychiatric disorders. There is increasing evidence that cognitive dysfunction is associated with the prognosis of OCD. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of DUI on the neurocognitive functions in patients with OCD. Methods Sixty-two patients with a DSM-IV diagnosis of OCD from the outpatient clinic were included in this study. We defined the short DUI if the DUI was 2-year or less and the long DUI if it was longer than 2-year. Neurocognitive functions were assessed by visuospatial memory function test and 4 subsets of K-WAIS such as vocabulary, arithmetic, block design and picture arrangement. Differences in neurocognitive functions as well as clinical variables between OCD patients with short DUI and those with long DUI were investigated. Correlation analyses were also performed to determine the correlation between DUI and neurocognitive functions. Results Compared with the short DUI group, the long DUI group performed worse in the block design test, which measures executive function. The long DUI group also had a higher level of compulsive symptom severity than the short DUI group. However, the DUI was not correlated with neurocognitive functions. Conclusions Findings in this preliminary study suggest that the long DUI in patients with OCD is associated with more severe executive dysfunction. Studies with larger samples and longitudinal design are needed to further confirm the prognostic role of the DUI in OCD.

  • The recent availability of recombinant human erythropoietin has opened new perspectives in the management of a variety of anemias. Clinical trials have been initiated in several countries using different approaches and methodology. We randomly assigned twelve premature infants(gestational age < 32 week) at high risk of requiring erythrocyte transfusion for anemia of prematurity with either subcutaneous recombinant human erythropoietin or a placebo. Treatment with rHuEPO was initiated at a dose of 100 units/kg day for 3 days a week. All patients were given supplemental oral iron therapy at a dose of 3 mg/kg per day, as tolerated and oral vitamin E at a dose of 25 units per day. Treated and control babies did not differ with respect to weight, hematocrit, overall mean reticulocyte count or rate of growth respectively. However, reticulocyte counts increased earlier in patients given rHuEPO. We conclude that rHuEPO administration is safe and feasible at the dose studied.

  • Purpose : The aim of this study was to develop a quality of life scale for children on chronic peritoneal dialysis(QOL-CPD). Methods : Thirty children on chronic PD at Seoul National University Children's Hospital participated. A healthy control group included 47 elementary school children. Other patients groups are 32 children from the department of pediatric orthopedics and 28 children from the department of child psychiatry. The age range of all children was 7 to 16 years. Preliminary items of the QOL-CPD were developed and administered along with the Korean version of the Children's Depression Inventory(CDI) to all children. Results : The final QOL-CPD was constructed by excluding those items with a factor loading of less than .20, and the principal axis factor analysis was performed again. The QOLCPD demonstrated a good internal consistency with a value of .87. The dialysis and childpsychiatric groups showed significantly lower QOL scores compared to the healthy control group. In addition, the dialysis and child-psychiatric groups showed greater difficulties on physical and academic functions. For the CDI, the PD group showed a mild level of depression. Conclusion : The results of this study demonstrate the clinical utility of a newly developed self-report QOL scale specific for children on chronic PD.

  • The research evaluates the possibility of generating electricity using pyrite containing mine tailings, which are the major cause of acid mine drainage (AMD), by applying iron oxidizing bacteria (in this case, Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans) and chemical fuel cell technology. The changes in the aqueous $Fe^{2+}$ concentration, which can represent an ionized form of pyrite, with an initial concentration of 9,000 mg/L were investigated during the 20 d growth period. Both the $Fe^{2+}$ and total iron (i.e., total $Fe^{2+}$)concentrations with or without A. ferrooxidans were observed. The $Fe^{2+}$ concentration decreased to about 6,000 mg/L, in the abiotic condition, while it decreased to about 400 mg/L in the biotic condition. The results showed that the increased $Fe^{2+}$ oxidation in the presence of A. ferrooxidans (i.e., catalytic ability of A. ferrooxidans) can be applied to electricity generation using pyrite containing mine tailings. In the co-presence of A. ferrooxidans and pyrite containing mine tailings, $Fe^{2+}$ oxidation and hence electron production increases, which, in turn, improves current density. This study can be applied to utilize ecological functions of indigenous bacteria in mine areas to enhance electricity generation efficiency.

  • Crash cushions are protective devices that prevent errant vehicles from impacting on fixed objects. This function is accomplished by gradually decelerating a vehicle to a safe stop in a relatively short distance. Commonly used crash cushions generally employ one of two concepts to accomplish this function. The first concept involves the absorption of the kinetic energy of a moving vehicle by crushable or plastically deformable materials and the other one involves the transfer of the momentum of a moving vehicle to an expendable mass of material located in the vehicle's path. Crash cushions using the first concept are generally referred to as compression crash cushions and crash cushions using the other concept are generally referred to as inertial crash cushion. The objective of this research is the development of a compression-type crash cushion by employing the two concepts simultaneously. To minimize the number of full-scale crash tests for the development of the crash cushion, preliminary design guide considering inertial and frictional energy absorption was constructed and computer simulation was performed. LS-DYNA program, which is most widely used to analyze roadside safety features, was used for the computer simulation. The developed crash cushion satisfied the safety evaluation criteria for various impact conditions of CC2 performance level in the Korean design guide.

  • Jasan An Whak did research on the essence of Sijo to show that Sijo has some features as a literature. I tried to show the formation process of Sijo theory in 1930s through Jasan's Sijo theory. As a preparatory step for it, I introduced Jasan's Sijo theory released in early 1930s and examined the characteristic aspects of it. Jasan recognized a literature as a directing post that reveals the history of our national spirit. He thought a literature as a foundation for satisfying new age. Also, he recognized the essence of a literature as a emotional expression. He emphasized that a new literature in Joseon age should have not only particularity of Joseon literature but also universality of modern literature. Jasan studied style of Sijo. Because he was at the time of modernization, he used the term, 'style', instead of 'poongkyeok', which had used before modern time. He tried to show linguistic artistry of Sijo through the series of his works about the style of Sijo. Jasan tried to find formal beauty of Sijo in the aspect of rhythm instead of rhyme. And he claimed that poetic words can be lengthened or shortened to be harmonious with the melody of Sijo. In other words, it is possible to change the words of Sijo for harmonizing with a tune. Jasan recognized that the words of Sijo have a musical function as well as a semantic function.
