'Beauty and the Beast' was generated as a novel in 1740 and descended to date with the musical movie in 2017. This study is to understand what contents has been derived and expanded from one story for 277 years upon analyzing 'Beauty and the Beast' with the background of the times. Due to the limitation to include all the folktales and stories, the subjects of this study are limited with the contents that had been known and recorded as 'Beauty and the Beast.' 'Beauty and the Beast' has been expanded to 7 types of contents including novel, fairytale, movie, drama, animation, musical and film opera. It was created as a novel in the eighteenth century, made as a fairytale, and developed as a movie by Jean Cocteau, a movie director. With Industrial Revolution and the development of science, 'Beauty and the Beast' which derived into animation, drama, and musical contents, has been developed as the film opera thanks to the new trial of Philip Glass and the development of music industry. 'Beauty and the Beast' is still regenerating with a variety of contents continuously upon the development of computer technology and the fad of global remake. With anticipation of further analytical studies on 'Beauty and the Beast,' it is expected that the data of this study can be contributed as a reference in the other studies.
This study investigates trends and changes in gender expression in film and animation. It compares how gender, race, and class discrimination that was socially and culturally expressed differently in past and modern media contents. Indiscriminate content appreciation by the "digital native" generation is likely to unconsciously create false stereotypes. In this study, 「Aladdin」(1992) and 「Aladdin」(2019) were analyzed. This study looks at in the characters have changed since the original, which was a 2D animation in 1992, was re-released as a live-action film in 2019. For character analysis, we compare and analyze major characters and find out the differences based on the nine personality types of Enneagram, which define human personality types. As a result, Princess Jasmine's character change was remarkable. In the past, Disney animations had the majority of patriarchal and male-dependent princess characters, but now Disney is aiming for self-directed and independent female characters. Also, scenes that could instill stereotypes of gender, race, and class were changed. Disney's change can be seen as expressing the gender image that the public wants. Analysis of the change in character's personality in these works can be a useful methodology for creating attractive characters for the public.
This article aims to examine the Sinpa of Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds. Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds was a box office hit with a 10 million attendance mark, but it was also criticized as a 'Korean Sinpa' at the time of its release. The original version of Along with the Gods is a Webtoon called Singwahamkke in Korean. The popularity of Singwahamkke and its adaptation, Along with the Gods was enormous, which prompted a very active research to be carried about the work. However there are only a few articles which analyze the Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds focusing on the Sinpa, even though the Sinpa of the Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds was a highly controversial issue when the movie was released. In this regard, this article tries to examine the Sinpa of the Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds closely, especially by comparing it with the original webtoon Singwahamkke Jeoseung. The body part of this article is composed of three major parts: chapters 2, 3, and 4. Chapter 2 contains an in depth explanation about the notion of Sinpa, the main conceptual research tool for this study. In chapter 3, the original webtoon Singwahamkke Jeoseung is examined closely. This chapter analyzes the 'Sinpajeok moment' in Singwahamkke Jeoseung and argues that despite the presence of Sinpa elements, the webtoon cannot be considered a 'Sinpajeok text'. On the other hand the main subject of chapter 4 is discovering what effect the adaptation from webtoon to movie had on this work, with a particular focus on the gender of Sinpa and Kim Ja-hong. Chapter 5, which corresponds to the conclusion, briefly evaluates the social significance of the controversy arisen in South Korea about the Sinpa in Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds. Sinpa is one of the most repeated code in the realm of Korean popular narrative. This is why the Sinpa of contemporary text is examined continuously even though there are already plenty of studies on the Sinpa. Everyone has called Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds Sinpa but no one has properly analyzed it. It is hoped that this article which closesly examined the Sinpa in Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds contribute to the field of Sinpa. It is also expected that this article can find appropriate contextual meaning of the series of Along with the Gods.
This research paper intends to examine the intertextuality of Klaus Mann's novel Mephisto (1936) and István Szabó's film Mephisto (1981) and how the derivative contents (i.e., film) accepted and improved the schematic aesthetics of conviction in original contents (i.e., novel). In general, the aesthetics of conviction is applied to criticize the state socialism of the artists of the Third Reich or the ideology of the artists of East Germany from a biased ethical perspective. Mephisto is also based on the aesthetics of conviction. Thus, it would be meaningful to examine the characteristic similarity and difference between Klaus Mann's real antagonist (i.e., Gustaf Gründgens) and fictional antagonist (i.e., Hendrik Höfgen) from a historical critical perspective. In this process, an aesthetic distance between the real and fictional antagonists would be secured through the internal criticism in terms of intertextuality. In this respect, the film aesthetics of István Szabó are deemed to overcome the schematic limit of the original novel. The conviction in both the novel and film of Mephisto pertains to the belief and stance of a person who compromised with the state socialism of Nazi Germany, i.e., succumbed to the irresistible history. Klaus Mann denounced Mephisto's character Höfgen (i.e., Gründgens in reality) as an "Mephisto with evil spirits" from the perspective of exile literature. For such denunciation, Klaus Mann used various means such as satire, caricature, sarcasm, parody and irony. However, his novel is devoid of introspection and "utopianism", and thus could be considered to allow personal rights to be disregarded by the freedom of art. On the contrary, István Szabó employed the two different types of evil (evil of Mephisto and evil of Faust) from a dualistic perspective (instead of a dichotomous perspective of good and evil) by expressing the character of Höfgen like both Mephisto and Hamlet (i.e., "Faust with both good and evil spirits). However, Szabó did not present the mixed character of "Mephisto and Hamlet (Faust)" only as an object of pity. Rather, Szabó called for social responsibility by showing a much more tragic end. As such, the novel Mephisto is more like the biography of an individual, and the film Mephisto is more like the biography of a generation. The aesthetics of conviction of Mephisto appears to overcome biased historical and textual perspectives through the irony of intertextuality between the novel and the film. Even if history is an irresistible "fate" to an individual, human dignity cannot be denied because it is the "value of life". The issue of conviction is not only limited to the times of Nazi Germany. It can also be raised with the ideology of the modern and contemporary history of Korea. History is so deeply rooted that it should not be criticized merely from a dichotomous perspective. When it comes to the relationship between history and individual life, a neutral point of view is required. Hopefully, this research paper will provide readers with a significant opportunity for finding out their "inner Mephisto" and "inner Hamlet."
The transformation of plots using the archetypical narratives is not just a repetition of the past story, but finding a new suitable meaning for present time and society. Due to this, the story can be variated depending on what the transformation has the main point for. Disney's animation overcomes the narrative feature of the past classic fairy tale that worked only for particular age and people, and recognized as a contemporary story that can give impression to more various people. This study use Vladimir Propp's Morphology of the Folktale, Carl Gustav Jung's complexes and shadow theory to examine how this animation is modernly recreated by transforming the archetypical narrative. As a result, we can find characteristics of structure and function for contemporary story, and those also work with characters in the recreated animation. Through this study we discovered that Disney's animation is a transfiguration of archetypical narrative through the exhaustive analysis, and this could be the helpful research for the future creation of animation which uses the archetypical narratives.
In the 1970s, Korea actively produced so many animated works which is called the "golden age" of korean animation. However, Korea imported and subcontracted foreign animations than creating original works and, there has been a constant controversy that many of the korean animations imitated foreign works. Therefore, this paper aims to analyze the factors that caused this and its patterns, focusing on works suspected of plagiarism in Korean animation during the 1970s and 1980s. First, the focus will be on the definition and composition of plagiarism in art creation, secondly, on the political-ideological, industrial-administrational, production-structural, and copyright awareness aspects of the factors of plagiarized animation. Thirdly, 30 korean animations produced at the time will be analyzed on the degree of design theft and plagiarism based on six criteria focusing on characters' shapes and color arrangements. By analyzing the social factors and patterns of plagiarism, this study aims to provide a social and cultural understanding of academic value about the process of korean animation's development.
In terms of class, race, or gender, critical literacy takes seriously the problem of inequality and injustice embedded in texts. Texts are considered as tools that are used for maintaining the status quo by constructing and communicating our identities, particularly in relation to others. While reading texts and identifying our roles in society, some feel empowered, and others, marginalized. Thus we need to challenge the characterization and the message included in those texts by asking problem-posing questions. In this paper I have demonstrated how to read and teach four versions of "Snow White" from a critical literacy stance. By the use of problem-posing questions, students are led to discover that one of Grimms' fairy tales, the original version of "Snow White," was written from the perspective of men with power, thus marginalizing women in general, as well as the seven dwarfs. Through a critical analysis of Snow White's personality, the typical theme of fairy tales - good is rewarded while evil is punished - should be challenged. In the animation, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, power is given to the marginalized people in the original, the seven dwarfs and women in general. In "Snow Night,"a feminist short story, women in general are empowered while men, who should be judged by their looks, are powerless. "Snow-Drop"reminds us of the original, but challenges stereotypes, prejudices, and the theme inherent in the story. In those three stories many parts from the original are rewritten from the perspectives of the marginalized, but still some people are described prejudicially. So students should be guided to write another story from a new perspective. When those four works were taught with problem-posing questions in a university, this approach proved to be quite successful: most students acknowledged the effectiveness of critical literacy in teaching literary works.

In 21st century, theater evolves into a complex aspects. Advanced visual media, such as photography and movies has brought crisis to theater's position, and that crisis led contemporary theater seek for distinctive strategy by repeatedly pondering over the format in which it can be more competitive than other arts. And postdramatic theatre is one of distinctive characteristics of this trend in contemporary theater. Among these flows, The aim of thesis is to study the phenomenon of postdramatic theatre and its practical application in the recently performed (2019) by Theater Group "Mul-Kyul". (2019) puts the body at the front, one of the features of the postdramatic theatre. When creating stage, or developing narratives, the process of characterization, or even highlighting dramatic themes, non-verbal focused theatrical expressions hold a dominant position over verbal expressions. Also, by combining various non-verbal elements like object, with body language, it builds a complex Scenography and creates a metaphorical expression. In this regards, I would like to classify the postdramatic theatre phenomenon shown in the (2019) into 'Disorganization of text through Scenography' and 'Collage of Body Language and Object' and consider its characteristics and meanings.
Recently, by growing of Korean comics/animation markets and number of consumers, the more people have been reproducing culture contents into derived contents. However, user experience of active users who enjoy these cultures have not been accepted well like other local culture festivals in South Korea, though there are high potentials of vitalization comics/animation festivals using the active users. In this study, the experiences of participants of BICOF (Bucheon International Comics Festival) from 2013 to 2014 researched using the method of ethnography, especially using (group) interviews and participant observations. The result from the research indicates that cosplayers have limited range of participation inside of festival. And they have negative experiences during their participation into festivals. Therefore, this study suggests necessity of methodology of continuous reflecting of the user experiences of active users into festival, for the solution of the successful festival, who was objectified in the festival.
In the1970's, Korean movie industry was down because of widely supplied Television. During the time, directed by Kim Cheong-ki was Big hit at the box-office that is bring Korean feature animation industry back to life. In 80's, when new military regime started, SF animation was prohibited to be on air by government because that assumed have bad influences on children, and korean animation industry was faced with recession, such as various imported foreign animations which were on color TV and wildly provided video recorders. At that time, director KIM Cheong-ki try to overcome the recession of animation industry by producing, < David and Goliath>, which was based on the Bible. The Bible, was based on the historical facts and had written by the time flow, that made few changes while it was transformed to a feature animation. Animation does not only reproduce the reality as it is, but also analyzing the story to create a new reliable world, by changing characters, creating new supporting characters, and expanding and reducing of narrative. Despite of such an effort, didn't achieve it's goal at the box office and not satisfied audience either because it was excessive reproduction of the Bible, not standing on the basis of those days social and cultural environment and popularity. This study is aimed at confirming changed narrative shown Kim Cheong-Ki's, and compare it with two other animated, directed by others, so that suggest the new direction of the religious feature animation production.
