  • This study examines American geography educators' familiarity and knowledge of Korea, their perception on sovereignty education, and their knowledge on Korea's sovereignty issues using the survey conducted at the annual conference of the National Council for Geographic Education (NCGE) in the United States in 2010 and 2012. This study also analyzes how much these knowledge and perception influence on values of sovereignty education and Korea's sovereignty issues and further investigates proper educational approaches on territorial issues in Northeast Asia. Knowledge on the geography of Korea of American geography educators is higher than their knowledge on Korean culture. Both experiences attending educational programs about Korea and visiting Korea further enhance their knowledge on the geography of Korea and Korean culture. They agree the importance of sovereignty education in geography education and believe that sovereignty education should promote students' sense of patriotism and encourage students to be global citizens who promote public interests. However, they value less on teaching on the economic value of their own country's territory and students' ability to understand territorial conflicts with other countries. American geography educators' perception on sovereignty education improves their familiarity with and knowledge of Korean territorial issues. This study identifies that providing opportunities to learn about Korea and Korean territorial issues can maximize geography educators' accessibility to Korean territorial issues, regardless of their interest in territorial issues. These findings help Korean government develops better strategies for formulating and implementing future international public relations practices for Korean territorial issues.

  • This research aims to analyze Baekdu mountain are with it's the east flowing streams which are the issues on the old maps. Also, it will analyze the eastern flows, Tomoon river; Boongye river; Dooman river, from Baekdu mountain which have been the border settlement issues since Josun dynasty. Also, it will analyze the north-eastern flows, Heukryong river; Songhwa river; Sockpyung river; Tomoon river; Boongye river; Dooman river, from Baekdu mountain which have been the border settlement issues since Josun dynasty. The mainly issued Baekdu mountain's north-eastern flows can be classified into six different flows by the classifications, it proves that there are various Baekdu mountain north-eastern flows on the old maps. the two streams theory of Tomoon and Doman river explains the perspective of the northern expansion, and the one stream theory expresses it by stating Boongye and Sockpyung river as the same one. However, in the case of the meaning of Boongye river is Haeran river on the middle of one stream theory map, there is no region expanding perspective but the same border perspective that Korean peninsula and China match. Boongye river is expressed into four different meanings. (1) It is the same river with Sockpyung and shows the regional expanding perception. (2) It is the same river with Tomoon and the down stream of Tomoon river.(3) It expresses the current name, Haeran river. (4) It simply means the river shows the boundary.

The Diversification of Environmental Aesthetics and the Rise of Everyday Aesthetics - Theoretical Agendas and Issues of Yuriko Saito's Everyday Aesthetics - (환경미학의 다변화와 일상미학의 부상 - 유리코 사이토의 일상미학 이론의 의제와 쟁점을 중심으로 -)

  • This paper explores the recent development of environmental aesthetics and critically examines the main agendas, claims, issues, and implications of everyday aesthetics, which is emerging as an important branch of environmental aesthetics. Environmental aesthetics began in the context of cultural change and environmentalism in the 1960s and expanded in the second half of the 20th century with a solid theoretical foundation. At the beginning of the 21st century, it entered a process of diversification of objects and subjects. Having reached academic maturity, environmental aesthetics has expanded into theoretical territory considering the urban environment and the human environment, providing practical coordinates as a discourse for planning and designing urban environments and landscapes. The most notable achievement of environmental aesthetics since the mid-2000s is the establishment of 'everyday aesthetics'. Yuriko Saito, who is leading the research on everyday aesthetics, expanded the objects and scope of aesthetic theory to everyday objects, events, activities, and environments. She excavates the microscopic and sensory aspects of everyday life, which have been overlooked by conventional art-centered aesthetics, through the lens of aesthetics. She reinterprets various layers of phenomena in contemporary urban landscapes and analyzes how the 'power of the aesthetic' hidden in everyday life profoundly affects the quality of life and the state of the world. Saito examines the appreciation of the distinctive characteristics and ambiance inherent in everyday objects and environments and proposes a 'moral-aesthetic judgment' to alert citizens to the environmental, social, and political consequences of everyday aesthetic appreciation and response. This paper identifies the issues and implications of everyday aesthetics as first, the expansion of aesthetics and the ambiguous everyday, second, the moral-aesthetic judgment and the aesthetics of care, and third, urban regeneration landscapes and aesthetic literacy. In particular, the moral virtues of everyday aesthetics that Saito proposes, such as care, thoughtfulness, sensitivity, and respect, provide a critical reference for the practice of contemporary urban regeneration landscapes. The 'aesthetic literacy' is a key concept demonstrating why an environmental aesthetics perspective is necessary to interpret everyday urban environments and landscapes.

  • In Korean academic societies, old maps has not yet been properly investigated in terms of their genealogy, classification, detailed place names, historical backgrounds and the other aspects. With publication of the bibliographies and papers on old maps reserved in museum and library, the scope of research enlarged gradually its scope from 1970s. In 1980s, with the development of theoretical geography, scientific analysis were applied to investigate the projection method of Daedongyeo-jido. The 1990s proved a prominent decade for researches. The photo-copies of old maps enabled researchers to investigate the in-depth comparative study. The more important thing is that old maps became to be powerful instrument in the research of historical geography, such as territorial disputes and marine name(東海). And county old maps compiled by region became to be regional-cultural contents of local areas. Important issues in old map research in Korean academic societies are about Cheonha-do which is unique old world map in Korea, grid-system projection in old county maps and the genealogy of Daedongyeo-jido(manuscript and block print edition). This study shows that bibliography of all old maps preserved in each library and museum should be standardized. This could enable the exchange of information of old maps between institutes. The more important thing is that conciliation of human, social and natural sciences should be applied in the research of old maps.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate social distance and attitude toward migrants's citizenship in Korea, a society with increasing cultural diversity. Using data from the 'Multiculturalism and Social Integration Survey' conducted by Academy of Korean Studies in 2008, this study analyzes three main issues: social distance between Koreans and foreigners, perception of the bases of national identity, and attitude toward migrants' citizenship and the causal factors of the attitude. The results show that social distances between Koreans and African Blacks/Arabs are significantly larger than those between Koreans and other ethnic or racial groups. But the relatively large social distances between Koreans and South-East Asians/North Korean defectors poses a more serious challenge to Korean society, since South-East Asians and North Korean defectors have comprised ever bigger part of migrants in Korea. The civil element is found to be more important base of national identity than the cultural or the ethnic bases, and there exists a strong negative attitude toward dual nationality. The results of regression analysis suggest that the potential of global citizenship for migrants will be realized by expanding universalism for basic human rights and awareness of the civil base of national identity on the one hand, and by minimizing the strong belief in ethnic homogeneity and the negative attitude toward dual nationality on the other hand.

  • The purpose of this study is to present a reasonable and concrete standard for the Korean aviation insurance compulsory subscription system. Through this, we aim to improve the current revision of laws and regulations, and ultimately create an environment in which the safety and property of the Korean people who use aircraft with appropriate aviation insurance can be secured. In particular, by reviewing the aviation business law and its new laws and regulations enacted in 2017, the legislative improvement direction of aviation insurance will be proposed. In order to maintain the continuous growth of the air transportation industry and to make amicable compensation for the victims, considering the characteristics of the total accident, instantness, and giganticness of air accidents in which a lot of people and property are lost in the event of an accident, adequate insurance coverage is essential. In this respect, the compulsory insurance to amend the principle of freedom of contract, which is the great principle of the modern judicial system, will be persuasive. However, in comparison with foreign legislation, the legal provisions on Korea's obligation to comply with aviation insurance need to be revised around the following issues: First, it is reasonable to enforce the regulation of the mandatory aviation insurance by legislation from the Congress not by administrative regulations. Because it will force the monetary obligations of the individual such as common air carriers. Second, our law regulations respond to various kinds of air damages by using the phrase "limit of liability stipulated in international conventions". However, as we have seen in the text, the range of compensation are various according to the use of legal instruments in international conventions such as the Montreal Convention, which governs the compensation of passengers for damages to passengers today. Third, in countries with narrow territories, such as Korea, there are big differences in flying time and insurable risk between domestic and international transportation. Therefore, it is necessary to divide domestic transportation and international transportation even in the obligation to join the insurance. This dual discipline has the advantage for rookies in air carrier market who mainly start their business from domestic service. Fourth, according to Korean law, the regulations of automobile loss insurance is applicable to the aviation mandatory insurance of unmanned aerial vehicle accident which is lack of persuasion. In the future, it will be appropriate to discipline insurance for unmanned aerial vehicles with unlimited potential for development from a long-term perspective.
