The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the action learning-based spiritual care education program on nursing students' spiritual needs, spiritual well-being, and spiritual care competence. This study was a pre-post test design with single group and participants were recruited from second-year nursing students at a University. From September to December 2014, the students participated in the action learning-based spiritual care education program, which were held 16 times, had decreased their spiritual needs and improved spiritual well-being and spiritual care competence. The data were analyzed using paired t-test with the SPSS WIN 23.0 statistics program. The results of this study indicate that the action learning-based spiritual care education program was effective in decreasing spiritual needs and improving spiritual well-being and spiritual care competence for nursing students. The nursing students, which provide a holistic care, will grow up to be a professional nurse by learning the nursing process including spiritual care. Also, an action learning-based education program should be developed in the various fields.
Spiritual direction is not a product created and developed by an individual, but a historical product that includes the church, believers, society, and the contexts of the times. Among the social changes related to spiritual direction, this study pays attention to monasticism and the Reformation. Focusing on these two social changes, this study analyzes the social dimension of spiritual direction indicated by the occurrence and change of spiritual direction and discusses its meaning. Around the time Christianity was officially recognized by the Roman Empire, monasticism began its long history, and Athanasius spread his ideal of monastic life and at the same time pursued the unity of the church and the monastic movement. Through this process, spiritual disciplines and educational models interacted and changed. During the Reformation period, Protestantism began to form new spiritual education and training. The Catholic Church pursued renewal through new concepts and practices of spiritual direction. Spiritual direction is being formed and recognized as a means of helping the spiritual life of individual Christians. The origin and change of spiritual direction mean that spiritual direction can be understood and applied differently reflecting the contexts and situations due to social interaction. Also, it should not be overlooked that spiritual direction can act as a cause of integration or division of the Korean Protestant churches.
In Korean Protestantism, interest in Christian spirituality has grown significantly since the 1980s. Spirituality is now studied and used as a crucial term and topic in theology and ministry. As research on spirituality expanded to various areas of study and ministry and various topics related to spirituality were dealt with, research on spiritual direction also began. Oe-Shik Kim and Hae-Yong Yoo, who studied in North America, are the early scholars who began to study spiritual direction in Korean Protestantism in the 1990s. Their research has influenced Korean Protestant scholars and pastors to understand spiritual direction and apply it to seminary education and the Korean Protestant churches. Spiritual direction has been practiced in the Korean church in the form and content of faith education, spiritual training, devotional training, discipleship training, small groups, and pastoral counseling. The spiritual direction practiced by Eastern, Western, and monastic traditions throughout Christian history is not shared by Korean Protestants. Because Korean Protestantism has developed a unique spiritual tradition in the Korean context, its contents and forms of spiritual direction reflect the Korean context. Korean Protestants are more familiar with Tongsung Kido, early morning prayer, Bible study or Bible meditation, and small groups than contemplative traditions and individual spiritual direction. Thirty years have passed since research on spiritual direction began. The Korean Protestant academia needs to critically reflect on its research and practice. Spiritual direction is a term and tradition of different Christian cultures around the world and is part of Christian history and tradition. Korean Protestant scholars and church ministers need to accept the concept and application of spiritual direction considering the context and spiritual tradition of Korean Protestant churches, a flexible understanding, perspective, and attitude toward the concept and application of spiritual direction in Korean Protestant churches are needed.
Spiritual care is at the center of hospice and palliative care. Patients facing serious and life-threatening illness have important needs in regard to faith, hope, and existential concerns. The purpose of this article is to review the key aspects of this care, including the definitions of spirituality, spiritual assessment, and spiritual care interventions. A review of the current literature was conducted to identify content related to spiritual care in hospice and palliative care. A growing body of evidence supports the importance of spiritual care as a key domain of quality palliative care. The literature supports the importance of spiritual assessment as a key aspect of comprehensive patient and family assessment. Spirituality encompasses religious concerns as well as other existential issues. Future research and clinical practice should test models of best support to provide spiritual care.
This study was done to evaluate current spiritual distress assessment tools and to assess nursing research adapted this spiritual distress assessment tools. Spiritual distress assessment tools were identified through systematic review. Ten studies about spiritual distress assessment tools were identified. In these studies, three international and one domestic standardized assessment tools were found. The purpose of developing these tools was to provide spiritual care through assessing spiritual distress. Domestic assessment tool had low reliability, was not proved by constructive validity, and did not include multidimensional spiritual concepts. International assessment tools may take into account cultural and religious backgrounds in the context for cultural adaptation of instruments. Based on these results, the development of Korean version of spiritual distress assessment tool is recommended.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the degree of spiritual well-being, spiritual nursing competency, and attitude toward death of nursing students at Christian universities and to find out the relevance and influence between variables. The subjects of the study were conveniently sampled 185 nursing college students located in C City, and data analysis was conducted using the SPSS 22.0 program to conduct t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson's Correction Coefficient. As a result, religious well-being was significantly higher in students with very satisfied major satisfaction, and spiritual nursing competence was higher in girls with high grades, and students with high major satisfaction. Attitudes toward death were high in male students, showing significant results, and spiritual well-being showed a significant positive correlation between spiritual nursing competence and attitude toward death. Therefore, an institutional approach is needed to strengthen spiritual well-being and develop a curriculum so that it can help provide spiritual health to nursing subjects.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to test the correlation between the levels of spiritual well-being and spiritual nursing care of nurses for cancer patients and to provide baseline data for spiritual nursing care. Methods: In the study, there were 209 nurses involved who cared for cancer patients, and they were from Christian General Hospital in a city, Jeonju. Data were collected from September 17 to 30 in 2008 using structured questionnaires. The data were analyzed using research methods, including descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Duncan test, and Pearson correlation coefficients. Results: The mean score of spiritual well-being of nurses was $63.41{\pm}10.32$ (range $20{\sim}80$) and that of spiritual nursing care was $26.96{\pm}7.05$ (range $15{\sim}60$). There was a significant positive correlation between the spiritual well-being of nurses and their spiritual nursing care (r=.353, P=.000). Conclusion: The spiritual well-being and spiritual nursing care have a positive correlation. The level of spiritual well-being of nurses was relatively significant, whereas that of spiritual nursing care was relatively low. Therefore, it is recommended, for spiritual nursing care that nurses responsible for cancer patients should pursue more spiritual growth, attend church services regularly, and should further be educated in their care and responsibility.

The purpose of this study was to identify the loneliness and spiritual needs of the elderly in a certain area. The participants in this study were over 65 years, 159 elderly who attended in senior classes in Seoul. The instruments used for this study were revised UCLA 'Loneliness scale' developed by Russell, Peplau & Cutrona (1980) and translated by Kim & Kim (1989) and 'Spiritual need scale' developed by Yong (2008). The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 15.0 program, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe's test and Pearson's correlation coefficient. The score of loneliness was 2.02/4, spiritual need was 4.51/5. The relationship between loneliness and spiritual needs showed significant negative correlation. Loneliness of the elderly who do not attend a religious attendance was high and spiritual needs were low. Spiritual needs of the elderly who are women over 80 years and living with subsidy from the government were high. Spiritual nursing interventions are needed to reduce a feeling of loneliness among the elderly who experience high degree of loneliness.
