The purpose of this study was to investigate teachers' perceptions of gender differences in students' mathematics and science learning ability. The sample included 289 elementary and secondary school gifted teachers. The teachers filled out the survey, asking their perceptions of gender differences in mathematics and science learning ability, as well as of the reasons of the differences. The results were as follows: 1) 65% of the teachers responded that gender differences existed in students' mathematics and science learning ability, 2) 63% of the teachers perceived that the differences began around higher elementary or middle school ages, 3) 57% of the teachers thought that gender differences existed in the high-achieving student group. Teachers perceived the reasons of differences were 1) differences in inborn ability, 2) the different expectation, and 3) the different ways of parental cares. Since teachers' perceptions of students' ability would impact teachers' attitudes on students, implications and suggestions were included in this article to provide teachers insights that promote students' better learning.

In this study, we analyzed the characteristics of Pedagogical Content knowledge(PCK)'s components through actual course of teachers of science gifted students in the middle school. For this study, four middle school science teachers of gifted students belonging to the gifted education professional organizations in a metropolis were selected, each of them was physics, chemistry, biology, and earth science teacher. Two of them were full-time teachers to teach only gifted students and two were part-time teachers who had taught general students in ordinary time and specially had taught the gifted students once a week. Qualitative data were collected through classroom observations, interviews, and documents. As a result, some unique characteristics of PCK's components were identified. The teachers' orientations to teaching science were closely correlated with PCK's components. The teachers' knowledges of science curriculum were different individually. But the decisions about type of teaching(acceleration or enrichment) were connected with the objectives of gifted education and lesson objectives. Also, the teachers' knowledges of science curriculum were influenced by the knowledge of students' understanding. Teachers used different instructional strategies according to the knowledge of science curriculum and the knowledge of students' understanding. We found that PCK's components were so closely connected and could show the direction of relationships among those PCK's components. We suggested teachers' PCK model which was named "Tetrahedron Model of PCK", to explain the characteristics and relationships of PCK's components.
This study was created with the intent of improving the teaching quality of the teachers responsible for instructing higher level math programs. Additionally, this research study was designed to analyze the instruction of mathematically gifted students by using "The Flanders Category System" and "TIMSS video analysis". The results of this study will provide opportunities for a deeper understanding of ways to improve the quality of gifted instruction in mathematics and furthermore will increase the expertise of teachers in the realm of gifted education in mathematics.

The most important factor in providing education to gifted students as well as to students in general are the teachers themselves. However, at present in Korea, most of the teachers in charge of education for the gifted are educated by in-service training programs only for a short period of time. It is doubtful whether the teachers, who have taught ordinary students in general, can teach gifted students effectively only after completing such a short course. This research investigated the relationship between the teachers' beliefs about educating the gifted and the teachers' classroom practices in a Science Academy through case studies. The guiding questions for this study are as follows: First, what beliefs do the participating teachers have about education for the gifted? Second, how are the participants' beliefs reflected in their classroom practices? Of the five participants, two are physics teachers, two are biology teachers, and one is an earth science teacher. I observed and videotaped four classroom practices for each participant and conducted an in-depth interview with each participant. Further data were collected through e-mails with the participants. All data were carefully transcribed and analyzed. The results are as follows: Beliefs about education for the gifted do not exist independently, and form a belief system connecting with beliefs about teaching and learning, and subject matter. And the belief systems of participants can be divided into "student-centered," "teacher-centered," and "conflict chaos." In the classes of the participants who have "student-centered" belief system, students' questions or opinions played an important role and the participation structure in the classroom was determined by the students. On the contrary, participants who have "teacher-centered" belief system focused on teaching contents as much as possible in their classes. These teachers played a heavy role and formed a participation structure where students depended on their teacher's intellectual authority and therefore participated in their class passively. A participant who have "conflict chaos" belief did not form a firm belief system yet, and traditional beliefs about teaching and learning were reflected a lot in her classes. The research results imply teachers' beliefs play an important role in classroom practices and beliefs about teaching and learning and subject matter as well as beliefs about education for the gifted are important factors for teachers who guide gifted students. Additionally, I make some suggestions for the improvement of teacher education for the gifted.
The purpose of this study is to explore the perception of the observation and nomination system for the identification of the gifted and to find out the importance and practice level perceived by the gifted education teachers using the concept mapping approach. For this, twelve gifted education teachers brainstormed and gathered ideas for the ideal ways of observation and nomination system and the gathered statements were solicited. Multidimensional scaling and hierarchical cluster analysis were also used. In addition, 112 gifted education teachers rated the importance of and the practice level for the suggested ideas of observation and nomination system. Results were as follows: First, 36 statements were solicited and as a result of concept mapping the suggested observation and nomination system were categorized as 'attainment of professionality', 'attainment of administrative support', 'attainment of fairness', and 'considering points for recommendation.' Second, there were significant differences between the perceived importance levels and the practice levels. Based on the results, imlications of the study were discussed in depth.
The purposes of this study were to find out what attitude teachers have toward adopting ICT education to educational programs for gifted students, and how ready they are for carrying out ICT education for gifted students. For these purposes, this study surveyed 191 teachers that are currently working for gifted students in various school levels, from elementary schools to junior high and high schools. The major results of this study were as follow: (1) most teachers recognized that enhancing ICT-related capabilites of gifted students is very important, and (2) ICT-related activities in current education programs for gifted students are limited to the basic level, such as web searching for collecting information and making visual presentations using well-known commercial software. Based on the common recognition on the importance of ICT-related capabilites for gifted students, this study suggests that training teachers, as well as employing well-trained teachers, should be the first and most important step for ICT education for gifted students.

In this case study, we investigated the characteristics of secondary beginning science-gifted education teachers' reflection on their science teaching with coteaching through mentoring. We selected two beginning teachers with less than one year teaching careers in secondary science-gifted education. The teachers planned, performed, and reflected together on their science teaching for science-gifted students during twelve class hours over four times. Since the second class, pre-, during-, and post-mentorings were conducted. We observed their science classes with coteaching through mentoring, and analyzed their reflective journals in the views of productive reflection. The analyses of the results revealed that 'instructional strategies and instruction for science-gifted education' and 'science-gifted students' were most frequently included in their reflection regardless of class time. 'Curriculum for science-gifted education' were also frequently included although fewer than the two aspects. However, 'subject matter knowledge' and 'assessment in science-gifted education' were hardly included. Two to four aspects of the five were variously integrated in their reflection. The integrations among three to four aspects were especially more frequently included than those between two aspects. The integrations of 'instructional strategies and instruction for science-gifted education' or 'science-gifted students' with the other aspects were also found to be the most frequent. These results suggest that coteaching through mentoring can promote beginning science-gifted education teachers' productive reflection on their science teaching.
The perception of pre-service teachers who participated as liaison teachers in the gifted education organization's different operating styles and the differences in the thoughts of these teachers were analyzed in this study. The inquiry survey was performed for 74 liaison teachers who had participated in the observational activities in the university annexed science gifted education center and the dormitory based gifted students education center supported by education of administration in Chungbuk Province. The individual in-depth interview was performed with 7 teachers based on the analyzed data. The perception of pre-service teachers who participated in as liaison teachers in the university annexed science gifted education center and the dormitory based gifted students education center was different from important element of the gifted and qualification of the teacher for gifted education. It was revealed that the differences between the education parts, education schedule and education methods of two the education centers, which were performed during the semester, influenced the perception of pre-service teachers who participated as the liaison teachers. The necessity of the systematic training on the observational skills and class contents were suggested as the essential support system for liaison teachers. The results of the study indicate that the gifted education organizations operating styles, the activities of liaison teachers, and pre-service teacher training program for gifted education emphasizes the long term actual guide experience at the education field for the gifted.
The purpose of this study is to provide basic information on the current status of elementary school teachers' perception of gifted education. For this purpose, this study wi1l analyze elementary school teachers' perception of the gifted education (i.e., general perception of gifted education, characteristics of gifted children, identification of gifted children, programs for gifted education, and teachers of gifted education). A questionnaire survey was used for the purpose and research questions of this study. The questionnaire used in this study was constructed by taking into account the results of surveys conducted in previous studies and the literature on gifted education. Before conducting the research, a preliminary inquiry was made to identify problems that may occur while the subjects were participating in the survey, as well as to determine the appropriateness of the questionnaire and the amount of time needed. The preliminary inquiry was conducted with ten randomly selected elementary school teachers who did not participate as subjects in the actual research. The results were later used as initial data for the actual research. The subjects of this study were teachers who were teaching in8 elementary schools under each office of education in Seoul. This process was conducted for 180 elementary school teachers from April to May 2004. The results were analyzed using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science) Ver. 10.1, a software program for statistical research. After the data were analyzed, the following conclusions were arrived at: 1. The result of the genera1 perception of gifted education by elementary school teachers were positive and reasonably high. The level of their perception of detailed information or knowledge, however, was relatively low. 2. As for their perceptions of the emotional characteristics of gifted children, t11e results showed a low level of understanding of the characteristics of gifted children. 3. As for their perceptions of identification of gifted children, the results showed a high level of understanding of the appropriate time to provide special education to gifted children and of the methods to identify such. On the other hand, their understanding of the identification of gifted children in an actual class was poor. 4. The respondents' level of perceptions of programs for gifted education was very low since many subjects did not have any experiences with such programs. 5. The results showed a very positive response to receiving training on gifted education, though they were very reluctant to be assigned as teachers of gifted education because of the excessive work that is associated with such and their lack of capability in handling gifted children.
