For two agricultural reservoirs that are rented for fishing spots, benthic nutrient fluxes experiment were performed two times with two sediments from fishing-effective zone and one sediment from fishing-ineffective zone using laboratory core incubation in oxic and anoxic conditions. During benthic nutrient fluxes experiment, the changes in DO, EC, pH, and ORP in the supernatant were not significantly different between fishing-effective zone and fishing-ineffective zone, and were similar to the sediment-hypolimnetic diffused boundary layer in agricultural reservoir. Except for $NO_3{^-}-N$, more benthic nutrient fluxes of $NH_4{^+}-N$, T-P, and $PO{_4}^{3-}-P$ from sediment to hypolimnetic was measured in anoxic than in oxic conditions (p<0.05). As the DO concentration in hypolimnetic decreases, the microorganism-mediated ammonification is promoted, the nitrification is suppressed, and finally the $NH_4{^+}-N$ diffuses out from sediment to hypolimnetic. Also, the diffusion of T-P and $PO{_4}^{3-}-P$ from sediments to hypolimnetic is accelerated through the dissociation of the phosphorus bound to both organic matters and metal hydroxides. The difference in the benthic nutrient diffusive fluxes between fishing-effective zone and fishing-ineffective zone was not statistically significant (p>0.05). Therefore, it was found that fishing activities did not increase the benthic nutrient diffusive fluxes to a statistically significant level. Due to the short fishing activities of 10 years and the rate-limited diffusion of the laboratory core incubation, the contribution of fishing activities on sediment pollution is estimated to be low. No significant correlation was found between the total amount of nutrients in sediment and the benthic nutrient diffusive fluxes in both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Therefore, nutrients input from various nonpoint sources of watersheds are considered to be a more dominant factor rather than fishing activities in water quality deterioration, and both aeration and water circulation in hypolimnetic were required to suppress the anoxic environment in agricultural reservoirs.
This work focused on the effects of the timing and the frequency of shoot cutting to maximize the productivity and the nutrient removal of three emergent macrophytes, Phragmites communis, Zizania latifolia and Typha angustifolia in natural wetlands. Shoot cutting significantly enhanced biomass production and resulted in more nitrogen and phosphorus removal from water in these three experimental species, compared to those of control. However, the frequency and the timing of shoot cutting, and the enhancement ratio were different among three species. For Phragmites stands, the highest productivity was 1.9 times of control in June treatment of the first year experiment, while 1.3 times in May treatment of the second year experiment. Zizania and Typha stands were both 1.2 times of control in August treatment and June and August treatment. Calculating the total annual removal rate of nitrogen and phosphorus based on the highest productivities among treatments, in Phragmites stands, 2.0 times of nitrogen and 1.8 times of phosphorus were removed in the first year, and both 1.4 times in the second year experiment. Likewise, for nitrogen and phosphorus; 2.4 and L.8 times in Zizania stands, and 1.8 and 1.9 times in Typha stands were removed. Overall, these results suggested that cutting treatment of shoots be effective. Thus, shoot cutting of two times during a growing season were recommended to maximize the effects: that is, in May or June, and October for Phragmites stands, and in August and October fur Zizania and Typha stands.
In the present study, experiments have been performed to investigate the effects of the type of adsorbent, pH, and ionic strength on the adsorption of nutrients (nitrate and phosphate in artificial solution) onto the dredged sediment from a coastal fishery. In addition, this study aims to evaluate the possibility of removing the nutrients from the water using the dredged sediment. In the adsorption experiments of the nutrients, the reactions were completed within 10 minutes using ${NO_3}^-$-N($100{\mu}M$, 10mM) and ${PO_4}^{3-}$-P($100{\mu}M$, 10mM). In the steady state, 61% and 77% of the initial amounts were removed respectively for $100{\mu}M$${NO_3}^-$-N and $100{\mu}M$${PO_4}^{3-}$-P. The thermal treatment of the dredged sediment at $900^{\circ}C$ was not helpful to increase the removal efficiencies of the nutrients. Additives such as CaO and MgO dropped the removal efficiency of ${NO_3}^-$ to 0%, but increased that of ${PO_4}^{3-}$ up to 98%. Adsorption isotherms of ${NO_3}^-$ and ${PO_4}^{3-}$ could be explained by the Freundlich equation ($R^2$>0.99). The adsorption reaction was little influenced by the pH and ionic strength. Based on the results showing short reaction time and considerably high removal efficiencies of the nutrients, it is proposed to apply the dredged sediment from a coastal fishery to removing nutrients such as nitrate and phosphate in the water.
In order to obtain necessary data for the use of hydrophytes to improve water quality of artificial lakes, production and nutrients absorption by some macrohydrophytes were investigated in a small water course at Woongcheon, Chungnam Province. The maximum above-ground standing biomass of Phragmites communis, Typha angustifolia and Zizania latifolia stand were 3,504 g/m$x^2$, 2,834 g/m$x^2$ and 3,125 g/m$x^2$, respectively. Estimated below-ground standing biomass of each stand were 9,671 g/m$x^2$,5,158 g/m$x^2$ and 5,813 g/m$x^2$, respectively. Concentration of nutrients in each organ was different among plant species. Maximum amount of standing nitrogen was the highest in the reed stand and that of standing phosphorus was the highest in the cattail stand. Amount of maximum standing nutrients are 2795.6 kgN/ha and 42.5 kgP/ha for the reed stand, 1,413 kg N/ha and 24.8 kgP/ha for the cattail stand and 1.901.1 kgN/ha and 38.4 kgP/ha for the wild rice stand, respectively. According to our investigation, it is concluded that reed, cattail and wild rice are suitable for water quality improvement of artificial lakes through nutrients absorption.

This study was carried out to assess the distribution and pollution level of organic matters and nutrients in surface sediments of the Yeongsan River Basin. The surface sediments were collected from the mainstream (12) and tributaries sites (4) for two years from 2015 to 2016, and the particle sizes, organic matters (Ignition Loss, COD, TOC) and nutrients (TN, TP, SRP) were analyzed. The distribution of particle sizes was dominated by sand in the upstream sites (MS1-MS7) and by silt loam in the downstream sites (MS8-MS12), but MS3 and MS6, located slightly upstream of the two weirs, were found to be mostly loamy sand and silt loam, respectively. As a results of the correlation assessment, the organic matters (IL, COD, TOC) were strongly correlated with particle sizes, while the nutrients (TP, SRP) were weak except for TN. The concentrations of organic matter and nutrient were higher at the downstream and the sites nearby the two weirs (MS3, MS6). In particular, the TP concentration at the MS3 site sampled in the second half period of the years was higher than that in the first half periods. Comparing of sediments criteria, the organic matters and nutrients were evaluated to have almost no toxic effects at all sites.

Algal biomass cultivated by wastewater is potentially useful resource for biodiesel production. However, little is known about algal nutrient metabolism and microbial interaction with bacteria under real municipal wastewater condition. In this work, we characterized nitrogen and phosphorus removals of municipal wastewater by a representative wastewater-growing algal population. Ankistrodesmus gracilis SAG 278-2, and analyzed its ecological interaction with wastewater bacterial communities. Compared to wastewater sludge itself, algal-bacterial co-culture improved nutrient removal. According to bacterial community analysis with 16S rRNA genes, a selective and dominant growth of a Unclassified Alcaligenaceae population resulted from algal growth in the algal-bacterial co-culture. The selectively stimulated bacterial population is phylogenetically close to Alcaligenes faecalis subsp. 5659-H, which is known to be co-present interact with algae in aquatic environment. These findings suggest that algal growth/metabolism may have effects on selection of a specific bacterial population in algal-bacterial co-cultures that can efficiently remove nutrients from municipal wastewater.
