  • In this paper, we presents a spatially adaptive noise detection and removal algorithm. Under the assumption that an observed image and the additive noise have Gaussian distribution, the noise parameters are estimated with local statistics, and the parameters are used to define the constraints on the noise detection process, where the first order Markov Random Field (MRF) is used. In addition, an adaptive low-pass filter having a variable window sizes defined by the constraints on noise detection is used to control the degree of smoothness of the reconstructed image. Experimental results demonstrate the capability of the proposed algorithm.

  • Low-dose X-ray fluoroscopic image sequences to avoid radiation exposure risk are contaminated by quantum noise. To restore these noisy sequences, we propose a 3D nonlocal means (NLM) filter based on stochastic distancesed can be applied to the denoising of X-ray fluoroscopic image sequences. The stochastic distance is obtained within motion-compensated noise filtering support to remove the Poisson noise. In this paper, motion-adaptive weight which reflected the frame similarity is proposed to restore the noisy sequences without motion artifact. Experimental results including comparisons with conventional algorithms for real X-ray fluoroscopic image sequences show the proposed algorithm has a good performance in both visual and quantitative criteria.

  • In this study we analyzed the tendency of the image characteristic by changing filtering factor for the proposed fast non local means (FNLM) noise reduction algorithm with designed Male Adult mesh (MASH) phantom through Geant4 application for tomographic emission (GATE) simulation program. To accomplish this purpose, MASH phantom for human copy was designed through the GATE simulation program. In addition, we acquired degraded image by adding Gaussian noise with a value of 0.005 using the MATALB program in MASH phantom. Moreover, in degraded image, the FNLM noise reduction algorithm was applied by changing the filtering factors, which set to 0.005, 0.01, 0.05, 0.1, 0.5, and 1.0 value, respectively. To quantitatively evaluate, the coefficient of variation (COV), signal to noise ratio (SNR), and contrast to noise ratio (CNR) were calculated in reconstructed images. Results of the COV, SNR and CNR were most improved in image with a filtering factor of 0.05 value. Especially, the COV was decreased with increasing filtering factor, and showed nearly constant values after 0.05 value of the filtering factor. In addition, SNR and CNR were showed that improvement with increasing filtering factor, and deterioration after 0.05 value of the filtering factor. In conclusion, we demonstrated the significance of setting the filtering factor when applying the FNLM noise reduction algorithm in degraded image.

  • The noise sources of a Hyperion image are mainly due to the atmospheric effects, the sensor's instrumental errors, and A/D conversion. Though uncalibrated, overlapping, and all deep water absorption bands generally are removed, there still exist noisy bands. The visual inspection for selecting clean and stable processing bands is a simple practice, but is a manual, inefficient, and subjective process. In this paper, we propose that the extrema ratio be used for noise estimation and unsupervised band selection. The extrema ratio was compared with existing SNR and entropy measures. First, Gaussian, salt and pepper, and Speckle noises were added to ALI (Advanced Land Imager) images with relatively low noises, and the relation of noise level and those measures was explored. Second, the unsupervised band selection was performed through the EM (Expectation-Maximization) algorithm of the measures which were extracted from a Hyperion images. The Hyperion data were classified into 5 categories according to the image quality by visual inspection, and used as the reference data. The experimental result showed that the extrema ratio could be used effectively for band selection of Hyperion images.

  • This paper presents an adaptive non-local means denoising algorithm using down-scaled images. This work provides a method to reduce artifacts and information loss around context region by increasing the number of similar patches for high activity region with down-scaled images. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms the non-local means algorithm more than 1.5 (dB).

  • X-ray image is a widely used to medical examination, airport security and cargo inspection. However, X-ray images contain many visual noise, which interrupt image analysis. Consequently, it is primary importance to reduce noises of X-ray image. In this paper, we present a improved denoise technique for x-ray image using pixel value and range weights. First, we denoise a x-ray image using bilateral filter. Next, we detect a edge region of the original x-ray image. If a denoised pixel belongs to the edge region, we calculate weighting values of original x-ray image and denoised x-ray image in $3{\times}3$ neighboring pixels and compute the cost value to determine the boundary pixel value. Finally, the pixel value having minimum cost is determined as the pixel value of the denoised x-ray image. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves good performance in terns of PSNR comparison and subjective visual quality.

  • In this paper, we proposed the adaptive local sigma filter reducing noises generated by an image sensor. The small noises generated by the image sensor are amplified by increased an analog gain and an exposure time of the image sensor together with information. And the goal of this work was the system design that is reduce the these amplified noises. Edge data are extracted by Flatness Index Map algorithm. We made the threshold adaptively changeable by the luminance average in this algorithm that extracts the edge data not in high luminance, but just low luminance. The Local Sigma Filter performed only about the edge pixel that were extracted by Flatness Index Map algorithm. To verify the performance of the designed filter, we made the Window test program. The hardware was designed with HDL language. We verified the hardware performance of Local Sigma Filter system using FPGA Demonstration board and HD image sensor, $1280{\times}720$ image size and 30 frames per second.

  • Hyperspectral imaging is used in a wide variety of research since the image is obtained with a wider wavelength range and more bands than multispectral imaging. However, there are limitations, namely that each band has a shorter wavelength range, the computation cost is increased in the case of numerous bands, and a high correlation between each band and noise bands exists. The previous analysis method does not produce ideal results due to these limitations. Therefore, in the case of using the hyperspectral image, image analysis after eliminating noise bands is more accurate and efficient. In this study, noise band elimination of the hyperspectral image preprocessing is highlighted, and we use fractal dimension for noise band elimination. The Triangular Prism Method is used, being the typical fractal dimension method of the curved surface. The fractal dimension of each band is calculated. We then apply the Continuum Removal method to normalize. A total of 35 bands are estimated by noise band with a threshold value that is obtained empirically. The hyperion hyperstpectral image collected on the EO-1 satellite is used in this study. The result delineates that noise bands of the hyperion image are able to be eliminated with the fractal dimension and Continuum Removal method.

  • Computed tomography (CT) has been increasing in frequency and indications for use in clinical diagnosis and treatment decisions. Multidetector CT has the advantage of shortening the inspection time and obtaining a high resolution image compared to a single detector CT, but has been pointed out the disadvantage of increasing the radiation exposure. In addition, when the low tube voltage is used to reduce the exposure dose in the CT, noise increases relatively. In the existing method, the method of finding the optimal image quality using the method of adjusting the parameters of the image reconstruction method is not a fundamental measure. In this study, we applied a double-tree complex wavelet algorithm and analyzed the results to maintain the normal signal and remove only noise. Experimental results show that the noise is reduced from 8.53 to 4.51 when using a complex oriented 2D method with 100kVp and 0.5sec rotation time. Through this study, it was possible to remove the noise and reduce the patient dose by using the optimal noise reduction algorithm. The results of this study can be used to reduce the exposure of patients due to the low dose of CT.
