  • This study is aimed at putting forward effective methods of computer education for use in schools by comparing the schools of UK and Korea. It shows : 1) a big difference in infrastructure such as H/W and Network, 2) for S/W budget UK teachers have control over their own budget, but not in Korea, 3) government, school, teacher, student, and parent all have the same mind set to promote the use of information communication technology in the UK, but in Korea the government alone drives it with its own policy. At University level, potential computer teachers in the UK are emphasized to practice fields works in schools, but in Korea, the course mainly consists of education theory and pre-teachers get only four weeks field experience. In addition, computer teachers are often those with majors in different fields, but due to the lack of interest in computer education, they are forced into these empty positions. This often leads to conflict between students and teachers because of those teachers who do not have the necessary depth in knowledge of computers.

  • This study aims to provide implications for the realization of the SDG goal for higher education through a comparative analysis of the UK and Australia's inclusive higher education policies. The cases of the UK and Australia were chosen for analysis since both countries have developed various policies to strengthen the inclusiveness of higher education since the early 2000s. The implications for the Korean government are as follows. First, it should approach the concept of underprivileged students by applying various categories such as 'race, region, and etc.,' not just for a category of income level. Second, it should enhance higher education opportunities for underprivileged students not only by expanding admission opportunities for them, but also by assisting them to adapt to college life and develop a student career. Third, it should provide underprivileged students with the customized support in consideration of their characteristics and merits. Finally, it should develop the "Inclusive Higher Education Project" which would help them complete higher education courses through regional partnerships.

  • This study aims to find an effective way to present essential science concepts in national science curriculum through international comparisons. Next Generation Science Standard (US), Ontario Science Curriculum (Canada), Australia Science Curriculum, and British/English Science Curriculum were selected for comparison. In science curriculum documents, these countries used terms such as 'Key ideas,' 'Big ideas,' 'Key concepts,' 'Disciplinary core ideas.' and 'Fundamental concepts' to present essential concepts of science. This study reviewed the characteristics of the meaning, the status, and the role of essential concepts country by country. The result shows essential concepts have been used with different meanings and statutes in each case. Furthermore, various roles were performed through essential concepts in order to organize their science curriculum. From these foreign nation's cases, this study proposes several ways to present essential science concepts based on results. First, interdisciplinary integrated concepts were needed to organize an integrated science curriculum. In science curriculum documents of the United States, Canada, Australia and England, two types of terms were used in order to structuralize an integrated science curriculum. Second, essential concepts should include concepts related with function and value as well as scientific knowledge. Third, essential concepts need to be presented in such a way as to show specific contexts. Therefore, selecting appropriate contents and structure are needed to be able to improve the way to present essential concepts in Korea's educational environment.

  • This comparative study attempts to explore in what politico-social context 'Education Welfare Invest Priority Zone Plan' has been developed and to find politico-social implications of Korean EWIPZP through critically comparing the cases of UK and France. Korean financial crisis brought up the importance of 'Education Welfare' turning into a concrete system, 'EWIPZP' in 2003. This educational welfare policy has expanded since 2005 up to now by the changed name of 'Education Welfare Priority Plan' in 2008, that is structurally different from the original framework which was to support schools in educationally disadvantaged areas. Even the cases of EAZ in UK and ZEP in France started by progressive political parties and established on the ground of 'equity' philosophy, turned into the excellence-based equality policy confronting with the harsh condition of neo-liberalistic global economy under the conservative regime. So does Korea under the critics against this tendency. Comparing Korean case with the cases in UK and France, the current Education Welfare Priority Policy in Korea should be back to the original principle of educational equity and transform into the bottom-up bilateral cooperation model from the top-down model by the authorized party itself in order not to be manipulated politically.
