  • Centipedegrass (Eremochloa ophiuroides) is a popular lawn grass in the southeastern USA. It has a naturally light green color and grows well on a wide range of soil types. Studies show limited morphological variation present in centipedegrass germplasm. To obtain the high morphological variation, plants were established from the irradiated seed at 10 Kr, allowed to interpollinate and harvested bulk seed, and then irradiated again for the next cycles. Morphological characteristics were measured in the 5 genetic varition lines (TC201 : cv. Common and non irradiated, TC202 : 4th cycles, TC241 : 6th cycles, TC306 : 8th cycles, and TC318 : 5th cycles) induced by recurrent gamma radiation. The ranges of variation of recurrently radiated centipedegrass lines < TC202, TC241 and TC306 except TC318(TifBlair) > for the stolons per plant, total stolon length per plant, longest stolon length, leaf length and width at top-most exposed internode were wider than those of non-irradiated line (TC201). Recurrent gamma radiation was very effective to enlarge the ranges of variation of morphological characteristics in reproductive organ like stolons of centipedegrass. The effect of quantity of gamma ray irradiation cycles on the means and ranges of variation in the morphological characteristics of centipedegrass was not regularly tended.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of artificial light sources on growth, yield, and glucosinolate content of hydoroponically grown Peucedanum japonicum in plant factory. Treatments were given with LED Blue:White(1:1, B:W), LED Red:Blue:White(2:1:3, RBW), and LED Blue:White(1:1)+Florescent lamp(BW+FL). Number of harvested leaves and leaf weight of BW+FL were higher than BW and RBW. BW+FL in leaf length and RBW in leaf width were significant difference with other treatments. Chlorophyll content and 'L' value were not significant difference among the treatments. The 'a' and 'b' value is the lowest in BW+FL. Glucosinolate content was high in order of glucobrassicin, glucoiberin, sinigrin, gluconasturtiin, progoitrin, glucoraphamin, and epiprogoitrin in all treatments, and total glucosinolate content was the highest in RBW treatment. Moisture, crude protein, crude fat, and ash content of leaves were not different among the treatments. In conclusion, this study showed that light caused growth and secondary metabolites synthesis, and we recommend to further study between light and secondary metabolites for increasing functionality.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the growth characteristics, yield, and chemical compositions of corn hybrids for silage according to the drainage depths in a lowland paddy field. The experimental design was arranged in a randomized block design with four treatments and three replications. The drainage depths of the four treatments were 0 cm, 20 cm, 30 cm and 50 cm. Tip-filling degree, ear length, and ear circle were higher in the 30 cm and 50 cm treatments compared with the other treatments (p < 0.05); but the plant length, leaf length, leaf width, ear height, stem diameter, and stem hardness were not significantly different (p < 0.05). The brix was higher in the order of 20 cm > 0 cm > 50 cm > 30 cm treatment. The fresh yield, dry matter yield, and TDN yield increased as the drainage depth increased (p < 0.05). The crude-protein and crude-ash content were highest in the 50 cm treatment (p < 0.05), but the crude-fat, NDF, ADF, and crude-fiber levels were not significantly different (p < 0.05). The total mineral content was higher in the order of 0 cm > 30 cm > 20 cm > 50 cm treatment (p < 0.05). Fructose, glucose, and sucrose were highest in the 20 cm treatment. The total amino-acid (EAA + NEAA) content was the highest in the 50 cm treatment. Based on these results, greater drainage depths increased the yield and feed value of silage corn.

  • A prototype of closed-type transplant production system(CTTPS) with fully environmental control was developed to produce massively quality transplants. Four photosynthetic photon flux(PPF) levels of 200,300,400 and 500$\mu$mol . m$^{-2}$ .s$^{-1}$ , four photoperiod levels of 1816 h,12/12h, 9/15 h and 6/18 h were provided to analyze the growth and development of cucumber plug seedlings(Cucumis sativus L., cv. Kyuewosalichungiang) as affected by PPF and photoperiod in a CTTPS. Effect of photoperiod on the growth and development of cucumber plug seedlings produced in a CTTPS was higher than PPF, Stem diameters dry weight of shoot and roots number of leaves, leaf with and length, and SPAD value of cucumber plug seedlings produced in a CTTPS were significantly high as compared to the control. But stem length of plug seedlings produced in a CTTPS was shorter than those of the control. Growth characteristics of cucumber plug seedlings raised at photoperiod of 6/18 h and PPF of 200$\mu$mol . m$^{-2}$ .s$^{-1}$ were similar to the those of the control. These results suggest that cucumber quality transplant can be produced at relatively short photoperiod and low PPF, It means that the electric energy consumed for the production of cucumber plug seedlings in a CTTPS can be saved.

  • This experiment was conducted to find out the effects of lime materials application on reducing injury of simulated acid rain(SAR) in soybean grown in pot contained with sandy loam. Six treatments including control, slaked lime(SL), 1% and 2% lime water(LW) and composite treatments with SL+LW were applied. Slaked lime was applied to soil in pot before planting, and lime water was applied to leaves a day prior to the spray of SAR(pH 2.7) and normal rain(pH 6.0), and these were sprayed at 2-day intervals. Growth, yield and yield components, foliar injury rate, chrolophyll content and photosynthetic activity in leaves, content of mineral nutrients in plant and soil chemical properties were analyzed and investigated. These results obtained are summarized as follows : Seed yield of all lime treatment was reduced by SAR compared with control. But seed yield of all lime treatment was increased with treatment of lime material in soil and on leaves. After 15 and 45 times spray of SAR, all lime treatments were effective in injury reducing visible injury of leaves compared with none treatment. Chlorophyll content in leaves was highest in plants treated with slaked lime+ 1% lime water and photosynthetic activity was highest with treatment of slaked lime. Concentration of total nitrogen, phosphate, and sulfur in soybean plant were increased by the spray of SAR. Concentration of total nitrogen, potassium and calcium in soybean plant were increased with treatment of slaked lime into soil. By treatments of SAR, soil pH was decreased, and total nitrogen and sulfur concentration in soil were increased. However, available phosphate and exchangeable cations in soil such as calcium, magnesium and potassium were reduced. Soil pH, calcium and silicate concentration were increased with treatment of slaked lime into soil.

  • In the green house, the effect of the mixed material of vermicast and humic acid on the growth of young raddish was investigated. 5, 10, 15, 30 or 50 kg(a.i.) of solid type humic acid was mixed with 300kg(d.w.) of vermicast/10a, each of which was applicated to the soil. And the conventional treatment(600kg of conventional organic fertilizer/10a) and untreatment plot were rendered for comparison. In all the experimental plots treated with vermicast, the number of leaves, leaf length, leaf biomass, root length, root diameter, root biomass of young raddish were higher than those in untreated plot. And in the experimental plots treated with the mixed materials of vermicast and humic acid, growth rate of young raddish was equal to or higher than that in the conventionally treated plot. Fresh biomass of leaves per leol' raddish in the plot treated with 300kg of vermicast + 5kg of humic acid was 1.79 times higher than that in the untreated plot and fresh biomass of root was 2.08 times higher, which was much more effective in its growth rate than that in any other treated plots. There were no prominent changes in soil physicochemical properties after the leol' raddish harvest from the soil treated with vermicast and humic acid, though.

  • The wasabi was planted in glasshouse to investigate the effect shade level (0, 10, 30, 70%) on growth and photosynthetic response. The net photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance were the highest under 10% shading rate in greenhouse. The lowest transpiration rate was in the non-shading treatment. 70% shading rate significantly reduced in photosynthetic characteristics. The number of leaf was decreased with increasing of shading rate. Leaf and petiole weight was the highest 10% shading and then followed by the non-shading treatment. Number of leaves, leaf, petiole and total weight were severely declined in 70% shading treatment. Shading rate (0%, 10%, and 30%) did not significantly influenced on the leaf length, leaf width and root growth. 10% shading level was the most effective for wasabi leaf production in hydroponics.

  • This study evaluated the effect of water content in the substrate during pre- and post-grafting period on the survival rate and quality of tomato plug seedlings. Nine combinations of three water levels (high, medium, and low) were set up in the substrate of both scion and rootstock. The water content in the substrate of the scion did not affect the survival rate of grafted tomato seedlings, while the survival rate was statically different among the various water contents in the substrate of the rootstock. The maximum survival rates (100%) were observed in seedlings treated with high water levels in the substrate of the rootstock, and the survival rates declined with decreasing water content in the rootstock substrate. The growth characteristics were not significantly affected by different water content in the scion substrate, while they were statically different among the seedlings treated with various water contents in the rootstock substrate. The growth characteristics decreased with decreasing water content in the rootstock substrate. The highest value of compactness was observed in grafted seedlings, which combined medium water level in the scion and high water level in the rootstock substrate treatment. The root morphology of tomato seedlings was also affected by water content in the rootstock substrate. The total root surface area, total root length, and number of root tips decreased with deceasing water content in the rootstock substrate.
