  • To find the relationship between the adequate amount of soil chemical components and ginseng growth including root weight, 49 farmer's red ginseng field from the main ginseng growing area were studied intensively. 1. The ranges of soil chemical component of high yield ginseng field were 8.9 to 14.5 me/100g of CEC 1.5 to 3.5% of organic matter, 45 to 257 ppm of available phosphorus, 0.34 to 0.55 me/100g of potassium and 0.002 to 0.012 of K/P ratio respectively. 2. Higher content of organic matter, CEC, exchangeable potassium and higher rate of K/P were observed in soils of ginseng field with high yield than in soils of low one. The CEC content in soil was positively correlated with the plant growth, and available phosphate content in soil was negatively correlated with yield of ginseng root. 3. There was highly positive significant correlation between root yield of ginseng and K/P ratio of ginseng soil. Similar result also observed between root yield of ginseng and K/P ratio of upper part of ginseng plant.

  • This study measures the influence of grass cover on water use and shoot growth of apple trees growing under different soil water regimes in temperate climate conditions and evaluates monthly crop coefficients of such conditions during four months of the growing season in 1995. To do so, double pot lysimeter experiments of 3-year-old Fuji' apple (Males domestica Borkh.) trees under a transparent rain shield were designed and installed. Trees were triplicate under three soil water regimes: (A) drip-irrigation at -50 kPa of soil matric potential (IR50). (B) drip-irrigation at -80 kPa of soil matric potential (IR80), and (C) constant shallow water table at 0.45 m below the soil surface (WT45). In each treatment, two soil surface conditions were tested: the soil surface bare, and covered with turf grasses. Mean monthly water use increased with increasing soil matric potential for drip irrigation and was greatest in the WT45 treatment. Monthly crop coefficients increased linearly in time for drip-irrigated apple trees ($r^2$ values of $0.953^{***}$ for turf grass-covered system and of $0.862^{***}$ for bare surface system), while those obtained in the WT45 treatment fluctuated, Duncan's multiple range tests for shoot growth showed that grass-covered IR50 was most favorable to apple trees. while bare surface waterlogged situation was most adverse at least in part due to a lack of oxygen in the root zone. Mid-season leaf Kjeldahl-N was higher in drip-irrigated apple trees than in WT45 trees, while soil Kjeldahl-N was not different irrespective of treatments.

  • 1. In the mulberry groves for both rearing of spring and fall, the rate of germination was 74.3 percent and the rate of the unfinished bud was 25.7 percent. 2. When the summer pruning after spring rearing was not worked, new sprouted leaves from the axillary buds of an age old branches was 74.88 percent of germination and the rest from unfinished bud during the spring showed 28.12 percent. 3. In the furrows running from north to south, new buds facing the due north were the worst but towards south-east and north-east were the best in their sprouts. 4. One year-old branches which had been raised without the summer pruning in the bush types of Morus Lhou (ser) Koidz offered a habitat where Apriona Rugico1lis Cherr could live. 5. On the grove of Morus Lhou Koidz cultivated at lower zone under a higher humidity and the shortage of sun light the appearance of Anomoneura Mori Schw was likely to happen very much. 6. One year old branches without the summer pruning produced more leaves owing to a long period of growth than branches with the summer pruning in the fall crops. 7. It is necessary to reconsider a certain distance of planting because of causing, when the summer pruning was not made in the bush plantation, a obstacle of fertilizer operation or the forth coming year's management. 8. It can not be thought the ideal method for us to raise mulberry tree such as Morus Lhou Koidz under natural form and at a short distance of planting (one another). 9. Among the species, Morus alba L. had a great deal of leaves and of the rate of germination per unit length of branch.

  • This Experiment was conducted to determine the effects of light shield materials when melon grown inside a plastic greenhouse in summer season. The average temperatures were 36.6℃, 34.5℃ and 34.0℃ respectively for the control(non-shield), coating agent, and the white net. The light transmittances were 69% and 75%, respectively inside the greenhouse treated with the coating agent and white net immediately after applicants, compared with that inside the control greenhouse. At the 40 and 80 days after treatment, the light transmittances for the coating agent were 92% and 98%, respectively, indicating it was slowly decomposed and removed, but there was no change in the transmittance for the white net. While the leaf number did not differ among the treatments, the plant height was higher in the white net and shading agent than in control. The weight of the leaves, fresh-weight and dry-weight were no different from that of shading, but it became heavier in the later stages. The marketable fruit yield was increased by 6% for white nets and 5% for the coating agent compared to control, there was no statistical significance. Therefore, coating agent is considered as an effective method to lower temperature during high temperature period, but it is preferable to use it in consideration of cultivation period, because the coating agent is gradually removed.

  • This study was conducted to analyze physical and chemical properties of horticultural substrates and response of hydroponically grown two cultivars of 'Namcheon' and 'Somirang' perilla by four different substrates: coir (chip:dust = 5:5), perlite, granular rockwool, and commercial mixed substrate (cocopeat:peatmoss:vermiculite:perlite: zeolite = 50:25:10:10:5). There were no significant differences in EC and pH according to substrates. Container capacity was the greatest in granular rockwool, and it showed appropriate levels in mixed substrate and coir. Air space was higher in coir and perlite than the other treatments. Bulky density reached a proper standard in all substrates excepting coir. The leaf length and width of 'Namcheon' indicated the most in mixed substrate, though the value of 'Somirang'was greatest in coir substrate. The leaf weight of both cultivars was highest in mixed substrate, and relatively low in coir and perlite. The total yield of leaves was separated by two groups: higher group, which are mixed substrate and granular rockwool, and lower group, which are coir and perlite. There was a large gap by 28% between these two groups. Therefore, this study suggests that substrates with high water holding capacity such as mixed substrate or granular rockwool are most suitable for the hydroponic cultivation of perilla, which require sufficient moisture supply to the root zone.

  • This experiment was carried out to improve the cultural practices of seedlings and to investigate the proper planting density in aromatic tobacco, Sohang. Two different cultural practices of seedling were employed; Temporary transplanting (TT; Conventional practices) and non temporary transplanting (N.T.). Vinyl pot sizes were $3.5cm{\times}3.5cm, \;4cm{\times}4cm$ and $5cm{\times}5cm$ Plants per hole were 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9. There were little difference among the vinyl pot sizes in all characters except the survival ratio. But it may be little problem on cultural practices by 7 plants per hole in $5cm\times$5cm vinyl pot. There were not significant in price per kg, yield per 10a and value per 10a between two cultural practices of seedlings and among three pot sizes. Mildness and filling power were increased by increasing the plants per hole. Combustibility of 5-9 plants were better than those of 1-3 plants per hole. The growing of 6 seedlings per hole in $5cm\times$5cm vinyl pot by non temporary transplanting resulted the best cultural practices for an aromatic tobacco, Sohyang.

  • To elucidate the relationship of the quality of aromatic tobaccos to their chemical constituents, certain chemical components and leaf quality by price were compared among cured leaves produced under different soil moisture levels during growing season. As the soil moisture increased, plant height and the length and width of largest leaf increased. days to flower was shortened and total chlorophyll and carotenoid content of green leaf decreased. As the soil moisture increased, leaf quality was deteriorated. The content of nicotine, pet. ether ext. and total nitrogen increased with slight increment of nonvolatile organic acids and higher fatty acids, but ash content and pH of cured leaves decreased under high soil moisture content. Volatile organic acids such as 3-methyl pentanoic acid, the main compounds contributing to the aroma of oriental tobacco, and most volatile neutrals decreased conspicuously under high soil moisture. The content of pet. ether ext., volatile organic acids, volatile neutrals, ash and pH of cured leaves were found to be the appropriate factors for the quality evaluation of aromatic leaves grown under under different soil moisture.

  • This experiment was carried out to obtain the basic information for the improving of leaf quality by topping time and depth in flue-cured tobacco. Development of palisade parenchyma and spongy parenchyma were in order of button stage>early flower stage>late flower stage by topping time, and were in order of 4th leaf topping from floral axis>2nd leaf topping from floral axis>floral axis by topping depth. When 2nd leaf from floral axis were topped at late flower stage in A grade field and at early flower stage in B grade field, total sugar to nicotine ratio ralating to organoleptic characteristics were desirable as 9.0 and 9.7, and petroleum ether extract contents relating flavor of flue-cured tobacco were high as 9.9% and 8.4%, respectively. In ecological tissue, percentage of direct effect on quality were 43.2% in palisade parenchyma. 26.5% in spongy parechyma. 17.7% in tissue ratio, 6.7% in leaf thickness, 3.1% in intercellular space, 2.8% in leaf type and in chemical components, were 40.6% in nicotine. 35.7% in T-sugar/nicotine, 10.0% in total sugar, 7.0% in T-nitrogen/nicotine, 4.6% in total nitrogen, 2.1% in petroleum ether extract. The optimum topping depth were desirable at topping under second leaf from floral axis at late flower stage in A grade field and at early flower stage in B grade field for good leaf quality.

  • Under the different conditions of planting density and compound fertilizer level, some agronomic and chemical characteristics of burley tobacco were investigated from 1982 to 1984. Leaf area and dry leaf weight per plant, crop growth rate, relative growth rate and net assimilation rate for 40-60 days after transplanting were higher with increasing plant spacing and fertilizer, but leaf area index was lower with increasing plant spacing. At topping stage, the leaf size was increased with increasing plant spacing and amount of fertilizer applied and the stem diameter was increased by increasing plant spacing. Leaf area, leaf weight per plant and weight per unit leaf area of harvested leaf were higher when plant spacing and fertilizer increased. It was estimated that the optimum plant spacing was 105cm x 34cm and level of com-pound fertilizer (N-P$_2$ O$\sub$5/ -K$_2$O =10-10-20) was 263kg/l0a for high yield. There were trends toward increase the contents of total alkaloid and total nitrogen with increasing plant spacing and fertilizer application. There was significant positive correlation between plant spacing and total nitrogen, and between fertilizer application and total nitrogen. The plant spacing of 105cm x 35 to 40cm and 227.5kg/l0a of fertilizer level may be profitable for farm economy and the low nitrogenous leaf.
