  • The study is aimed to find out the causes of rapidly increasing chloride (Cl$^{-}$) concentration of the Samyang 3rd pumping station originated from coastal springs of Cheju since January 1996. The study results show that it was caused by following complicated natural and anthropogenic effects. Due to severe draught in 1996 with total rainfall of only 41.7% of annual mean of the last 36 years (1991 to 1995), it creates firstly), significant decrease of the spring discharges as well decline of the groundwater level at the site . Sea water level was in general 4.4 cm to 12.4 cm higher than the groundwater level of the site during 2 to 3.8 hours at each high tide. Those higher potential head of sea water motivates the sea water intrusion into the fresh water lens through the permeable clinkers and fracture zones situated beneath the existing grouted zone which was installed to a maximum 10 m below the ground water surface, The repeated expansion and contraction of the fresh water lens occurred by periodic changes of the sea water level at high and low tide accelerates secondly the enlargement of the transition zone between the fresh and sea water at the site. The decrease of recharge amount by rainfall shortage creates thirdly the reverse flow at the interface of sea water and groundwater. The repeated groundwater extraction of 2790${\pm}$450 $m^3$d$^{-1}$ at the time of low tide, when the fresh water lens of the sire is under the contraction stare, makes additional drawdown of the ground water level and induces the upconing of salt water into the fresh water lens. The duration of spring discharge whose Cl concentration is less than 150 mg/1 at the low tide measured at the nearby springs was about two hours with discharge rate of 532 $m^3$d$^{-1}$ and after that Cl$^{-}$ concentration is increased up to more than 1900 mg/ι.eased up to more than 1900 mg/L.

  • Sodium hypochlorite used in water disinfection processes is generally in the production of chlorine to 0.8%. As the dose of chlorine increases, disinfection by-products (Chlorate) also increase simultaneously and exceed water quality standards. In this study, the electrolytic cell of a sodium hypochlorite generator (12% chlorine) was adjusted to control the production of the disinfection by-products. As a result, it was possible to reduce Chlorate concentrations by more than 95% by adjusting the pH of the electrolytic cell from 1.53 to 4.2 (normal pH of the electrolytic cell). As a low current is required to obtain these results, a 15% improvement in the efficiency of the positive electrode is also observed. For the development of High Sodium Hypochlorite Generation can be used in a safe sodium hypochlorite solution, which is expected to contribute to improvement in the safety of the disinfection process.

  • DIWS system was employed to treat hydrochloric acid gas from cold rolling mill process of iron and steel industry. Chlorine gas generated from the acid regeneration system was combined with hydrogen gas and hydrogen chloride gas was increased to 50%. After the injection of Na2S2O3 to remove chlorine gas, the removal of hydrogen chloride was stably kept 87.5~88.8%, where the inflow was 13.1~13.4ppm and the outflow was 1.5~1.7ppm. DIWS system can be recommended for the real iron and steel plant because it was stably maintained not only the air emission standards but also the reduction of chemical usage.

  • Marine and hydraulic structures are subject to durability damage not only due to the penetration of sea water but also due to the attachment of marine organisms. Therefore, in this study, we tried to develop an antifouling coating agent with self-cleaning function for marine concrete. It was confirmed that the antifouling coating agent mixed with AKD, cellulose nanofibers and BADGE had sufficient antifouling performance at a well hydrophobicity of around 140° in contact angle and an inclination angle of 15°. In the abrasion resistance test of the surface, only a maximum loss of 0.015 g occurred. In the durability test, as a result of the chloride ion permeation test, almost no chloride ion permeation occurred in the variable where the coating agent was applied, and carbonation and freeze-thaw damage also rarely occurred, so it was analyzed that it was effective in securing durability of concrete.

  • The distributed systems managed by K-water were surveyed to study the characteristic of disinfection-by-product (Trihalomethans & Haloacetic acids) formation and the correlations between the concentrations of disinfection-by-product and physico-chemical parameters. Five distribted system were selected according to their water ages and the degree of deterioration of their pipelines. Total seven items including Trihalomethans (THMs), Haloacetic acids (HAAs), BDOC, DOC, pH, chlorine residual, and temperature were analysed in monthly basis. The concentration of organic matter were increased according to water age and pipeline deterioration in this study. The coefficient of determination between the decline of residual chlorine and the increase of water age was revealed as high. Also, the coefficient of determination between the decline rate of residual chlorine and the increase of the Trihalomethans concentration were studied as high. Furthermore the longer water age is the bigger the effect on Trihalomethans formation and temperature. However, the coefficient of determination between the concentraion of Haloacetic acid and water age, residual chlorine, and temperature were revealed as low in this study.

  • Recycling of bottom ash from municipal solid waste (MSW) incinerator has been strictly limited due to its composition of high level chlorine and other unfavorable substances. The composition of MSW has been, however, changed after the introduction of garbage-bag sales system, extended producer responsibility (EPR) policy and the prohibition of direct landfill of food waste. Recent waste shows reduced moisture and chlorine content, increased calorific value due to the separation of food waste, incombustible materials and PVC. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the trend of composition changes of MSW incinerator bottom ash and to compare the analytical results with those before the separation system was introduced. CaO content of bottom ash, one of the major component of cement clinker, increased from 26.7% in 2001 to 34.0% in 2006. The chlorine content showed a dramatic decrease from 1.84% in 2001 to 0.00655% in 2006, which is closely compatible with that of the fly ash of coal-utilizing thermal power plants, which is mainly due to the changes of MSW composition. It is eventually considered that there is a possibility of utilizing the incinerator bottom ash as a raw material of cement clinker feed substances.

  • Recycled aggregates show high water absorption rate compared to natural aggregates due to microcrack developed during production process and adhered cement pastes at the surface of recycled aggregates. This leads to the deterioration of mechanical properties and slow work flow. Currently it is getting hard to satisfy high demand for natural aggregates. Utilizing recycled aggregate more widely may be a substitutable countermeasure for the shortage of natural resources. In this study, two-stage mixing approach(TSMA) suggested by Tam et al. is used to produce recycled aggregate concrete(RAC) with 100 % replacement of coarse natural aggregate and tests for compressive strength, elastic modulus, and chloride ion diffusion coefficient are conducted to find out the effect of TSMA compared to normal mixing method. According to experimental result compressive strength and elastic modulus of RAC with TSMA was superior to those of RAC with normal mixing irrespective of water-cement ratio, and in some cases mechanical properties of RAC with TSMA approached to those of natural aggregate concrete(NAC). However, chloride ion diffusion coefficient of RAC was higher than that of NAC. This illustrates that TSMA is not an appropriate method in reducing chloride ion diffusion coefficient, resulting in inconsequential contribution of TSMA to the durability of RAC.

  • This study was conducted to determine the maintenance energy requirements of growing goats in order to establish an appropriate energy benefit system, to reduce feed costs and improve livestock productivity of goat farmers, and to present basic data for detailed specifications afterwards. This experiment was conducted as a group specification test for a total of 3 months, with 32 goats of three months age and conducted by four treatments with different energy levels (T1: NRC+0%, T2: NRC+10%, T3: NRC+20%, and T4: NRC+30%). The average daily gain was the highest in the treated with NRC + 10% of the energy level of the experimental diet, and the feed conversion ratio was in the range of 6.3 g to 7.3 g in the group feeding experiment. Although there was no significant difference in digestibility between treatments, the digestibility of dry matter, crude protein, and crude fat was higher in T2 treated with NRC + 10% than the other treatments. Through the regression equation of the values of MEI and ADG obtained through the experiment (Y=0.5439X+111.51, R2=0.712), the maintenance energy requirement of the goat in the growing period was estimated to be 111.51 kcal/kgBW0.75.

  • This study evaluated the efficacy of chlorine dioxide (ClO2) as an oxidant to reduce malodor emission from chicken feces. Two experiments were performed with the following four treatments in parallel: 1) fresh chicken feces with only distilled water added as a control, 2) a commercial germicide as a positive control, and 3) 2,000 or 4) 3,000 ppm of ClO2 supplementation. Aluminum gas bags containing chicken feces sealed with a silicone plug were used in both experiments, and each treatment was tested in triplicate. In Experiment 1, 10 mL of each additive was added on the first day of incubation, and malodor emissions were then assessed after 10 days of incubation. In Experiment 2, 1 mL of each additive was added daily during a 14-day incubation period. At the end of the incubation, gas production, malodor-causing substances (H2S and NH3 gases), dry matter, pH, volatile fatty acids (VFAs), and microbial enumeration were analyzed. Supplementing ClO2 at 2,000 and 3,000 ppm significantly reduced the pH and the ammonia-N, total VFA, H2S, and ammonia gas concentrations in chicken feces compared with the control feces (P<0.05). Additionally, microbial analysis indicated that the number of coliform bacteria was decrease after ClO2 treatment (P<0.05). In conclusion, ClO2 at 2,000 and 3,000 ppm was effective at reducing malodor emission from chicken feces. However, further studies are warranted to examine the effects of ClO2 at various concentrations and the effects on malodor emission from a poultry farm.

  • Heart contraction is essential for insect hemolymph circulation, in which various physiological changes need control of the heart contraction. Thus, interruption of heartbeats intimidate insect survival. Chlorine dioxide induces release of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which has been regarded as the main insecticidal agent. This study analyzed the effect of chlorine dioxide on heartbeats of the Indianmeal moth, Plodia interpunctella. The larvae have the dorsal vessel on the medial dorsal region in a form of an extending tube from the first thorax to 10th abdominal segment. Dorsal vessel contraction was noticeable between 3rd and 10th abdominal segments, where five heart chambers were observed. Average heartbeat rate was 118.6 beats per min at $25^{\circ}C$. However, the heartbeats varied with ambient temperature. Injection of chlorine dioxide to hemocoel suppressed the heartbeats in a dose-dependent manner. The suppressive effect of chlorine dioxide also increased with exposure time to gas form of the chemical at 100 ppm. However, vitamin E (an antioxidant against ROS) treatment significantly rescued the larvae treated with chlorine dioxide in the heart contraction activity. These results suggest that chlorine dioxide negatively influences on the heart contraction of P. interpunctella via its production of ROS.
