  • High performance concrete mixes are selected and corresponding test specimens are made for the study of chloride diffusion coefficient at reference time. The concrete mixes were same designs as those used in construction of bridges located in a marine environment. Mix design variables included binder type, water-to-binder ratio, mineral admixtures to total binder weight substitution ratio, fine aggregate source, chemical water reducer admixture type for high strength and high flowability, and target slump or slump flow. The test results showed that the diffusion coefficients at reference time varied significantly according to the type of mineral admixtures and their substitution ratios. A model for diffusion coefficient at reference time considering the type of mineral admixture and the substitution ratio was developed. Diffusion coefficients from the developed model were compared with those from literature review, a previous model, and additional test results. All of the comparisons verified that the developed model can reasonably predict diffusion coefficients and the application of the model to the durability design against chloride penetration is appropriate.

  • The qualitative factors influencing the ingress of chloride ion into concrete are water-binder (W/B) ratio, cement type, age, chloride ion concentration of given environment, wet and dry conditions, etc. Thus, an objective of this experimental research is to investigate the effects of cement types and environmental conditions on the chloride ion diffusion characteristics in concrete through the chloride ion diffusion test. For this purpose, the diffusion coefficients for chloride ion in concrete with three types of cement such as ordinary portland cement (OPC), binary blended cement (BBC), and ternary blended cement (TBC), were measured for the concrete specimens with W/B ratios of 32%, 38%, and 43%, respectively. The diffusion coefficients for chloride ion were also measured for the concrete specimens with W/B ratio of 43%, which were subjected to standard curing and field exposure conditions. It was observed from the test results that the resistance against chloride ion penetration increased with decreasing W/B ratio and those of BBC and TBC concretes were greater than that of OPC concrete. Therefore, it was revealed that the use of these cements containing mineral admixtures is required to extend the service life of RC structures exposed to chloride environment. On the other hand, it was noted that the resistance against chloride ion penetration of field exposure test specimens was slightly lower than that of standard curing test specimens due to the penetration of chloride ion under the irregular ambient temperature, splash of wave, and cycle of wet and dry.

  • Recently, there are a lot of researches related to the high-fluidity concrete (HFC) with field applications. However, most applications and studies are with concretes with high strength level so there are little studies about durability evaluations such as chloride ion penetration properties with normal strength concrete. Therefore, to evaluate the durability of HFC with normal strength level, this study performed the chloride ion penetration test and observed the micro pore distribution with normal strength HFC which contains limestone powder. Experimental results showed that most micro-pores have diameters between 0.005 to 0.05 ${\mu}m$ with HFCs using limestone powder and the average diameter becomes larger with the increase of limestone powder content. Also, it was shown that, with the increase of the limestone powder content, penetration depth and diffusion coefficient of chloride ion increased and diffusion coefficient had good relationships with compressive strength and average pore diameter with the coefficient of determination over 0.90.

  • The major cause of deterioration for the concrete bridge decks exposed to de-icing chemicals would be chloride-induced reinforcement corrosion. Thus, in this paper, in order to predict time to corrosion for concrete bridge decks in the urban area, chloride concentration was measured with depth from the surface. A frequency analysis on surface chloride concentration and chloride diffusion coefficient of concrete bridge deck equals 0.192, 29.828 in the scale parameter and 7.899, 1.983 in the shape parameter of gamma distribution. The average value of surface chloride concentration equals 1.5 kg/㎥ and condenses from 1 to 2 kg/㎥ in the level of probability 70%. From the probabilistic results, it is confirmed that 26mm of minimum cover depth in order to target 20 years over is calculated. The countermeasure strategy to extend the service life of concrete bridge deck exposed to de-icing chemicals would be an effective method to increase cover depth and to place high performance concrete, which could lead to reduce the chloride diffusion coefficient and distribution range.

  • Evaluation of chloride penetration is very important, because induced chloride ion causes corrosion in embedded steel. Diffusion coefficient obtained from rapid chloride penetration test is currently used, however this method cannot provide a correct prediction of chloride content since it shows only ion migration velocity in electrical field. Apparent diffusion coefficient of chloride ion based on simple Fick's Law can provide a total chloride penetration magnitude to engineers. This study proposes an analysis technique to predict chloride penetration using apparent diffusion coefficient of chloride ion from neural network (NN) algorithm and time-dependent diffusion phenomena. For this work, thirty mix proportions with the related diffusion coefficients are studied. The components of mix proportions such as w/b ratio, unit content of cement, slag, fly ash, silica fume, and fine/coarse aggregate are selected as neurons, then learning for apparent diffusion coefficient is trained. Considering time-dependent diffusion coefficient based on Fick's Law, the technique for chloride penetration analysis is proposed. The applicability of the technique is verified through test results from short, long term submerged test, and field investigations. The proposed technique can be improved through NN learning-training based on the acquisition of various mix proportions and the related diffusion coefficients of chloride ion.

  • It is necessary to predict the penetration of chloride ions for designing RC construction in marine environments. However, it takes a long time to obtain chloride migration coefficients. Therefore, the rapid chloride penetration test (RCPT) is generally used to shorten the test time. But there is a difference between chloride migration coefficients determined by rapid chloride penetration tests and those based on exposure in marine environments. In this study, we evaluated the effect on the chloride ion migration coefficient caused by a change in voltage and NaCl concentration. We also compared the relationship between the chloride ion migration coefficient by RCPT and that by exposure in marine environments. As a result of the experiments, we found that there is only a small change in the experimental factors based on changes in voltage and NaCl concentration and since they are so small, we can conclude that they are in the range of experimental error and test results from chloride ion migration coefficients by RCPT and exposure were very different from each other. In the exposure experiments, when the water-cement ratio was increased, the smaller fine air gaps in concrete affected the chloride ion migration coefficient.

  • It is time-consuming to estimate chloride diffusivity of concrete by concentration difference test. For the reason chloride diffusivity of concrete is mainly tested by electrically accelerated method, which is accelerating the movement of chloride ion by potential difference. In this study, portland cement concrete and concrete containing with ground granulated blast-furnace slag (40 and 60% of cement by weight) with water-cementitious material ratio 40, 45, 50 and 60% were manufactured. To compare with chloride diffusivity calculated from the electrically accelerated test and immersed test in artifical seawater, chloride diffusivity tests were conducted. From the results of regression analysis, regression equation between accelerated chloride diffusivity and immersed chloride diffusivity was linear function. And the determinant coefficient was 0.96 for linear equation.

  • In this study, high-strength concrete mixtures were made with blast-furnace slag of 50% and 70% replacement level to evaluate material properties including compressive strength development, adiabatic temperature rise, autogenous shrinkage and chloride-ion migration coefficient. Test results showed that the use of high percentage blast-furnace slag in high-strength concrete can reduce heat of hydration and chloride-ion migration coefficient, result in control thermal cracking and improve durability performance especially under high corrosive environment.

  • According to the high demand of concrete structures with high performance, various studies have examined on the high performance concrete, especially high strength concrete. Various admixtures are required to produce high strength concrete and silica fume has been the most popular admixture. Recently, however, metakaolin, which is similar to silica fume in properties but cheaper, has been introduced to high strength concrete. In this study, high-strength concrete using metakaolin were studied of capillary pore structure by mercury intrusion porosimetry technique and the accelerated chloride diffusivity by electrical difference. In result, it was found that the pore structure improved and compressive strength increased and chloride diffusivity reduced as more metakaolin content was added. In addition, a regression analysis of $5{\sim}2,000nm$ pore volume and both compression strength and chloride diffusivity revealed that each these had a high correlation of about 0.76 and 0.68.
