  • Naturalized plants are invaded through various routes and distributed throughout the nation. They are also invaded in the sand dune ecosystem and poses a threat ecological niche of indigenous sand dune plants. We studied the effects of salt stress on the plant growth to suggest the management plans of naturalized plants in the sand dune ecosystem. As a result of germination experiment according to the salt gradient, germination rate decreased as the higher concentration and tolerance range was up to 160 mM. As a result of seedling experiment according to salt gradient, mortality rate was up to 90% from 0 mM to 200 mM and 100% over 300 mM. The day of first death with different concentration was 18.5 days in 100 mM and 6 days in 800 mM since the experiment has started. In addition, the day of last death with different concentration was 29.5 days in 100 mM and 6 days in 800 mM. Therefore, two stages of management plans would be effective. The first one is to suppress the germination by salt spray over 170 mM before germination. The other one is to wither seedlings in a short period by salt spray over 600 mM.

  • In the southern sea of Korea and the areas of Tsushima warm currents the relationship between the distributions of eggs and larvae of anchovy (Engraulis japonica) and oceanic conditions was examined on July and August 1997, The south Korean coastal waters, the water temperature of below $20\~23^{\circ}$ and the salinity of above 33.0 (PSU), the mixed waters between the south Korean coastal waters and the Tsushima warm currents, $21\~25^{\circ}$ and $32.0\~32.5$ and the Tsushima warm currents, above $26^{\circ}$ and below 31.5 were distributed at the surface layer. The Tsushima warm currents were distributed at the northeast of Jeju Is. and off the southern sea of Korea. As an appearance of warm streamer, the mixed waters were intruded into the coastal areas of Komun Is.$\~$Sori Is. and Sori Is.$\~$Yokji Is.. Approximate paths of surface water by the drift card experiments were similar with the intrusions of the warm water identified from the water temperature and salinity distributions. The distributions of chlorophyll concentration were consistent with the distributions of water temperature and salinity, Anchovy eggs and larvae were mostly distributed at Komun Is., Yokji Is, and the southwest of Koie Is. where chlorophyll concentrations were high and cyclonic circulations by the warm water intrusions (warm streamers) were formed.

  • Airborne chlorides are transported to inland by sea wind to be attached to seashore concrete structure surface then penetrated into concrete structure members. Since the surface attached chloride amount are dependent on the amount of airborne chlorides, the prediction of distribution of airborne chlorides is important information in preventing chloride corrosion problems in seashore concrete structures. The prediction of surface chloride amount from airborne chlorides environment is extremely difficult than concrete directly in contact with seawater. In addition, their penetrating tendency is different from that of concrete immersed in seawater. In this study, properties of surface and penetrated chlorides under airborne chlorides environment are investigated. Concrete specimens were manufactured and exposed to marine environment for 3 years. The specimens were analyzed at the time durations of 1, 2, and 3 years to check surface chloride amount to penetrated chloride depth. The results revealed that there were certain differences according to surface roughness of concrete and with and without washing effect due to rainfalls. The evaluation results showed that penetrated chlorides depend on amount of airborne chlorides and duration of exposure. In addition, a notable tendency of having deeper chloride penetration and higher chloride content in concrete members under long-term exposure was observed.

  • The gobiidae, $Tridentiger$ $trigonocephalus$, $Chasmichtthys$ $dolichognathus$ and $Favonigobius$ $gymnauchen$ were reared for 4 weeks under 0~33.6‰ salinity conditions to examine the effects of various salinity on its survival and growth. Survival rate of $C.$ $dolichognathus$ and $F.$ $gymnauchen$ were significantly declined below 3.4‰ and 0‰, respectively. Growth rate of $T.$ $trigonocephalus$ was significantly reduced 0‰ salinity. Growth rate of $C.$ $dolichognathus$ and $F.$ $gymnauchen$ exposed to ${\geq}$13.4‰ and ${\geq}$6.7‰ were significantly higher than those of gobiidae exposed to below ${\leq}$10.1‰ and ${\leq}$3.4‰ salinity, respectively. This study reveled that low salinity (${\leq}$3.4‰) reduced survival and growth rates of the 3 gobiidae suggesting potential influence on the natural mortality of gobiidae in the coastal areas.

  • This study aims to decipher surface water mass interaction in summer in the South China Sea and East China Sea by radium isotope distribution pattern. Salinity and activity ratio of radium ($^{228}Ra/^{226}Ra$) showed gradual changes, which were adequate to apply simple two end-member mixing between Kuroshio surface water and Changjiang Dilute Water for the East China Sea and the former and Nearshore Diluted Watermass (NDW) for the South China Sea. Two tracer methods, salinity and Ra isotope ratio, were compared for East China Sea. Results showed remarkable consistency for waters near Kuroshio, however, discrepancy were noticeable after Tsushima Warm Current branching. Mixing with subsurface waters may cause the discrepancy. When mixed with subsurface waters, salts and radium isotope ratio are expected to be biased in opposite direction, i. e. prone to underestimate the fraction of less saline water in the case of salts and vice versa for Ra isotope ratio. Taking the mean values of two different results seems more realistic to estimate fraction of end-members.

  • In order to investigate the seasonal variation of watermass in the adjacent sea of Naro Island, oceanographic observation on the fishing grounds were carried out by the training vessel of Yosu National University on winter, spring, summer, and autumn in 2000. The results obtained are summarized as follows ; 1) the watermass in the fishing ground were divided into the coastal water (30.0∼31.4psu), mixing water (31.5∼32.9psu) and the offshore water (33.0∼35.0psu) according to the distribution of salinity from T-S diagram plotted all salinity data observed on winter, spring, summer, and autumn in 2000. 2) the ranges of temperature and salinity were from 4.$3\circ_C$ to 10.1$^{\circ}C$ and from 33.1psu to 34.9psu in winter, from 8.$1\circ_C$ to 13.$7\circ_C$ and from 33.1psu to 34.3psu in spring, from 14.5$^{\circ}C$ to 24.$2\circ_C$ and from 30.5psu to 34.1psu in summer, and from 14.$5\circ_C$ to 18.$6\circ_C$ and from 30.1psu to 34.0psu in autumn, respectively. 3) the distribution of watermass in the fishing ground varied largely each seasons, but a general tendency on the distribution was obtained. That is, in winter and spring the offshore water was distributed most widely and in summer the coastal and mixing water occupied the fishing ground but in autumn the mixing water prevailed. 4) variation of temperature and salinity were appeared between the surface and 20m layer in the sea aduacent to Naro Island. Therefore, in the summer the thermocline were made between surface and 20m layer with vertical gradients of 4.$0\circ_C$/7m.
