  • Despite advancements in the development of synthetic fibers and materials that provide better insulation, fire burn injuries remain a significant issue. To ensure adequate protection, clothing and equipment must be selected on the basis of performance. There are different standards like ISO standards applicable to each of the various types of clothing used by fire fighters. But, in most cases, the tests are performed in the conditions of high heat flux exposure, the clothing material can be destroyed easily. Thus the effective way to investigate the protective performance for the low (radiant) heat flux conditions should be needed. Therefore improved RPP (Radiant Protective Performance) test method based on the onset of pain burn injury was suggested. Experiments were performed to verify the proposed method with current protective clothing for fire fighters and the transient heat transfer characteristics were identified, also. Moreover, several protective performance indices were acquired from experimental results to analyze their relations.

  • The risk of transverse cracking in concrete decks of composite bridges is affected by many factors related to the bridge design, materials, and construction. Among others, the thermal and shrinkage stresses are the most important factors that affect the transverse cracking in early-age concrete decks. The thermal stress at the concrete deck is mainly affected by both ambient temperature and solar radiation. The shrinkage stress at the general strength concrete deck is mainly affected by drying shrinkage and the high strength concrete deck is mainly affected by autogeneous shrinkage. Three-dimensional finite element models of composite bridges were made to investigate the stress due to thermal and shrinkage stress.

  • A study of thermophoretic particle deposition has been carried out for a particle laden stagnation flow considering the effect of radiative heat transfer. Energy, concentration and radiative transfer equations are all coupled and have been solved iteratively assuming that absorption and scattering coefficients were proportional to the local concentration of particles. Radiative heat transfer was shown to strongly affect the profiles of temperature and particle concentration. e. g., radiation increases the thickness of thermal boundary layer and wall temperature gradients significantly. As the wall temperature gradients increase, the particle concentration at the wall decreases due to thermophoretic particle transport. The deposition rate that is thermophoretic velocity times particle concentration at the wall decreases as the effects of radiation increases. The effects of optical thickness, conduction to radiation parameter and wall emissivity have been determined. The effects of anisotropic scattering are shown as insignificant.

  • The calculation model for heat transfer analysis of rocket engine combustion chamber considering film-cooling has been established. Convective, radiative heat transfers and film-cooling effect in combustion chamber were evaluated using empirical equations especially for rocket engine combustors, and for heat transfer outward from chamber wall general convective and radiative equations were applied. Structural grid has been generated inside chamber wall for FVM calculations, and transient thermal analyses were carried out by time-marching techniques. LOx/kerosene rocket engine with chamber pressure of 50 bar has been analysed, and it is shown that, in that case, the film-cooling less than 4% remarkably contributes to reduce wall temperature, but the effect of the effect of film-cooling more than about 4% is not significantly increased.

  • The finite-volume method for radiation in a three-dimensional non-orthogonal gas turbine combustion chamber with absorbing, emitting and anisotropically scattering medium is presented. The governing radiative transfer equation and its discretization equation using the step scheme are examined, while geometric relations which transform the Cartesian coordinate to a general body-fitted coordinate are provided to close the finite-volume formulation. The scattering phase function is modeled by a Legendre polynomial series. After a benchmark solution for three-dimensional rectangular combustor is obtained to validate the present formulation, a problem in three-dimensional non-orthogonal gas turbine combustor is investigated by changing such parameters as scattering albedo, scattering phase function and optical thickness. Heat flux in case of isotropic scattering is the same as that of non-scattering with specified heat generation in the medium. Forward scattering is found to produce higher radiative heat flux at hot and cold wall than backward scattering and optical thickness is also shown to play an important role in the problem. Results show that finite-volume method for radiation works well in orthogonal and non-orthogonal systems.

  • Radiative transfer in energy systems such as furnaces, combustors, boilers and high temperature machineries is a significant mode of heat transfer. Although there are many solution schemes suggested for analysis of radiative transfer in multi-dimensional systems, the applicabilities and accuracies of these schemes have not fully tested for nongray gases. Especially reference data for enclosures of non-orthogonal shapes are not yet enough. In this paper we present some precise radiative transfer solutions for a black walled 3-dimensional cylindrical system filled with nongray gases. The SNB(statistical narrow band) model and the ray-tracing method with the T$_{N}$ quadrature set are used for finding nongray solutions. Although the solution method used in this study is not suitable for engineering purposes, the resulting solutions are proved to be quite accurate and can be regarded as the exact solutions and the results presented in this paper can be used in developing various solution schemes fur radiative transfer by real gas mixtures.s.

  • An experimental reactor system was devised and employed to examine catalytic coal gasification. A 4-kw tungsten halogen lamp heater combinded with a graphite sample basket coated with silicon nitride film made rapid heating and cooling possible. Also a small graphite cap on the thermocouple tip which located just beneath the sample basket helped remarkably to read real temperatures. Silicon nitride film on the basket and the cap showed very good protection against the reaction between graphite and oxidant gases during the experiments. The weight of specimen could be continuously measured without disturbance.

  • An analytical study was carried out to evaluate the regenerative cooling characteristics in the liquid rocket engine of a 10tf-thrust level using kerosene as a fuel. As a supplementary cooling method, a radiative cooling was applied to the nozzle extension. It was found out from this work that the cooling system with the regenerative and radiation cooling only is not adaptable for the liquid rocket engine of a 10tf-thrust level using kerosene as a fuel for the $2^{nd}$ stage of the space launch vehicle, with the viewpoint of the thermal and thermo-structural instability and the excessive pressure drop in the cooling channel.

  • Radiation heat transfer was calculated for initial stage of crystal growth in Czochralski crystal growth system. View factors among surface elements were calculated for the estimation of heat evolution and all the surfaces were assumed to be diffuse-gray. The values of view factors were greatly different along the position of surface elements. The dissipated amounts of heat flux from the melt surface were 3.6 times larger than those from the crystal surface at the initial stage of crystal growth and this amounts were greater when the surface elements were not considered. The trijunction part of the crystal was greatly affected by the melt surface near the crystal. Consequently radiation heat transfer between surface elements must be considered in order to correctly simulate the initial crystal growth.
