  • Remaining life of turbine rotors with a crack can be assessed by the fracture toughness of the aged rotors at service temperature. DC potential drop measurement system was constructed in order to evaluate material toughness nondestructively. Test material was 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steel used widely for turbine rotor material. Seven kinds of specimen with different degradation levels were prepared according to isothermal aging heat treatment at $630^{\circ}C$. Electrical resistivity of test material was measured at room temperature. It was observed that material toughness and electrical resistivity decreased with the increase of degradation. The relationship between fracture toughness and electrical resistivity was investigated. Fracture toughness of a test material may be determined nondestructively by electrical resistivity.

  • An attempt was made to evaluate the degree of aging degradation in thermally aged 2.25Cr-1Mo steel by electrical resistivity measurement. Artificial aging was performed to simulate the microstructural degradation in 2.25Cr-1Mo steel arising from long time exposure at $540^{\circ}C$. Microstructural parameter (amount of solid solution element), mechanical property (ductile-brittle transition temperature) and electrical resistivity were measured to investigate the mutual relationship among these parameters. Depletion of solid solution element(Mo and Cr) in matrix was detected after aging. The ductile-brittle transition temperature(DBTT) increased rapidly in the initial stage of aging and then saturated afterward. On the other hand, the electrical resistivity decreased rapidly in the beginning and then saturated in the later stage of aging.

  • An attempt was made to evaluate the changes of microstructures and mechanical properties with increasing aging time in 2.25Cr-1Mo steel. In this study, it was verified the feasibility of the evaluation for degraded 2.25Cr-1Mo steel by isothermal heat treatment at $630^{\circ}C$ up to 1,000 hours using surface SH wave and investigated the change of attenuation coefficient and propagation time. Attenuation coefficient had a tendency to increase according to degradation and propagation time drastically in the beginning of deterioration. A good correlation between ultrasonic attenuation coefficient and hardness was found, which made sure that attenuation coefficient is an potential parameter for evaluation of aging degradation. In addition, it has verified experimentally the frequency dependence of ultrasonic group velocity and attenuation coefficient using wavelet transform.

  • The integrity of the turbine rotors can be assessed by measuring reversible permeability and Vickers hardness of the aged rotors at service temperature. The measurement system of reversible permeability, which measured by applied alternating perturbing magnetic field, was constructed in order to evaluate material degradation, nondestructively. The test specimen was 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steel used widely for turbine rotor material, and the specimens were prepared by the isothermal heat treatment at $630\;^{\circ}C$. The reversible permeability of the test materials were measured at room temperature. The peak interval of reversible permeability and Vickers hardness decreased with the increase of degradation. The degradation of test material may be determined nondestructively by the lineality of Vickers hardness and the peak interval of reversible permeability.

  • Ultrasonic methods are widely used to degradation assessment. Remaining-life cycle of metal can be estimated by ultrasonic parameters because ultrasonic velocity and attenuation are affected by change of material properties with accumulated fatigue in the metal. Therefore, in this study, we will estimate overall change of material properties by 2D C-scan image. Fatigued aluminum alloy 6061-T6 samples from 0 to 85% were prepared for evaluating fatigue life cycle. Also, degraded image of materials using attenuation is proposed to estimate degree of material degradation for determining degraded area of fatigued samples. Finally, we will predicts process pf degradation with measured attenuation of fatigued aluminum alloy 6061-T6 samples.

  • In this study, the effects of Low Earth Orbit(LEO) environments on the degradation behavior of epoxy nano silica composite materials were investigated. The nanocomposite materials containing silica particles in different weight ratios of 10% and 18% were prepared and degraded in a LEO simulator to compare with the neat epoxy cases. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was performed on the degraded nanocomposites and the activation energies were calculated by Friedman method, Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO) method, Kissinger method, and DAEM (Distributed Activation Energy Method) based on the iso-conversional method. As the results, for the neat epoxy sample cases, it was found that the average activation energy was increased as the degradation was progressed. When the nano particles were mixed, however, the energy increased to the 15 environmental test cycles, and decreased afterwards, meaning that the particle mixture contributed adversely to the thermal degradation. Discussions on the results of the different calculation methods were also given.

  • The thermal behavior of $NiFe_2O_4$ prepared by a solid-state reaction was investigated for $H_2$ generation by the thermochemical cycle. The reduction of $NiFe_2O_4$ started from $800^{\circ}C$, and the weight loss was 0.2-0.3 wt% up to $1000^{\circ}C$. In the $H_2O$ decomposition reaction, $H_2$ was generated by oxidation of reduced $NiFe_2O_4$. The crystal structure of $NiFe_2O_4$ maintained during the redox reaction of 5 cycles. From this observation, the lattice oxygen in $NiFe_2O_4$ is released without the structural change during the thermal reduction and oxygen deficient $NiFe_2O_4$ can be restored to the spinel structure of $NiFe_2O_4$.

  • The two-step water splitting thermochemical cycle is composed of the T-R (Thermal Reduction) and W-D (Water Decomposition) steps. The mechanism of this cycle is oxidation-reduction, which produces hydrogen. The reaction temperature necessary for this thermochemical cycle can be achieved by a dish-type solar thermal collector (Inha University, Korea). The purpose of this study is to validate a water splitting device in the field. The device is studied and fabricated by Kodama et al (2010, 2011). The validation results show that the foam device, when loaded with $CeO_2$ powder, was successfully achieved hydrogen production under field conditions. Through this experiment, we can analyze the characteristics of the catalyst and able to determine which is more advantageous thing to produce hydrogen compared with previous experiment that used ferrite-device.
