In this study, the effects of the various conditions of frosting and defrosting on the behavior of defrosting in a fin-tube heat exchanger have been examined experimentally. The electric heater is used for defrosting in a fin-tube heat exchanger It is shown that there are several local maxima in the water draining rate. The amount of residual water on the heat exchanger after the completion of defrosting is kept constant due to surface tension on the heat exchanger. Without considering the degradation of the thermal performance due to the frosting, the defrosting efficiency is improved with increasing amount of the frost irrespective of the frosting condition. The defrosting behavior is affected by the frosting density as well as the frost accumulation, which vary with the experimental operating conditions during the frosting period. The heat loss to the surrounding air decreases, and the melting and defrosting efficiencies show high values with decreasing heat input.
Phase change materials (PCM) are able to store a large amount of latent heat, and can be applied to thermal energy storage systems. In a PCM, it takes a long time to store heat in the storage system because of the low thermal conductivity. In this study, a finned-tube-in-tank heat exchanger was applied to a PCM thermal energy storage system to increase heat transfer efficiency. The effects of geometric and operating parameters were investigated, and the results were compared with those of the tube-in-tank heat exchanger. The finned-tube-in-tank heat exchanger showed higher heat transfer effectiveness than the tube-in-tank heat exchanger. The heat exchange effectiveness of the storage tank was determined as a function of the average NTU.
A study on frost prevention of fin-tube heat exchanger is experimently performed by spreading antifreezing solution on heat exchanger surface. It is desirable that the antifreezing solution spreads completely on the surface forming thin liquid film to prevent frost nucleation and crystal growth and to reduce the thermal resistance across the liquid film. A small amount of antifreezing solution falls in drops on heat exchanger surface using two types of supplying devices, and a porous layer coating technique is adopted to enhance the wettedness of antifreezing solution on the surface. It is observed that the antifreezing solution liquid film prevents fin-tube heat exchanger from frosting, and heat transfer performance does not degrade through the frosting tests. The concentration of supplied antifreezing solution can be determined by heat transfer analysis of the first row of heat exchanger to avoid antifreezing solution freezing due to dilution by moisture absorption.
In vapor compression systems which use refrigerant as a working fluid, the oil is commonly used for compressor lubrication. Since the presence of lubrication oil can change the characteristics properties of refrigerant, the oil affects the heat transfer performance of heat exchanger to a large extent. In this paper, we focus on the effect of PVE oil experimentally on heat transfer performance of the fin-tube heat exchangers which use R410A as a refrigerant. To evaluate the heat transfer performance, the refrigerant to air type test facility chamber has been used. Fin-tube heat exchanger with grooved has been tested while according to the oil mass fraction variation from nearly zero to 1.7 wt%. It was found that the low level of oil mass fraction has an obvious effect on heat transfer performance, while the high level seems no significant influence. The influence of the oil mass fraction to heat transfer performance, however, is different between evaporation and condensation.
In this study, the effects of design factors of finned-tube heat exchanger, such as fin spacing and fin array on the frost growth and heat exchanger performance are investigated under a frosting condition. The results show that the amount of frost, frost density and blockage ratio of air flow passage increase with decreasing fin spacing. Heat transfer rate increases momentarily at the initial stage of frosting and then decreases. After that heat transfer rate continues to increase again to reach a maximum value and then decreases dramatically. It is shown that the time required for heat transfer rate to reach a maximum value becomes shorter with decreasing fin spacing, and after a maximum value, heat transfer rate decreases very fast. The maximum allowable blockage ratio is introduced to determine the operation limit of a finned-tube heat exchanger operating under frosting condition and is obtained as a function of fin spacing. It is also shown that heat transfer rate of heat exchanger with staggered fin array increases about 17% and the amount of pressure drop of air increases about 1~2 mmH$_{2}$O, compared with those of in-line type heat exchanger under frosting condition.
In the present study, we used a loop thermosyphon heat exchanger consisting of condensers with internal fins and external plate fins which are 480 mm wide, 68 mm long, and 1,000 mm high. The heat transfer pipes in the heat exchanger were 15 mm in diameter and 1,000 mm in length, and 98 heat transfer pipes were installed in the heat exchanger. According to the experimental results, as the spaces between the internal discontinuous pins decreased, the frequency of pressure drops increased and changes in temperature at the outlet of the condenser were shown to be a little smaller. Therefore, we can see that as the spaces between internal discontinuous pins decreased, the heat transfer performance increased. For the loop heat pipe heat exchanger consisting of a condenser with internal and plate fins, as the temperature of the air flowing into the condenser increased, the condensation heat transfer rate also increased, and as the condenser refrigerant inflow temperature increased, the condensation heat transfer rate increased as well.
The present paper reports the method for evaluation of heat-transfer performance of finned tube heat exchangers in a low Reynolds number regime (Re = $160\~800$) and also reports the data of heat transfer and pressure loss taken from a finned tube heat exchanger with/without vortex generators (VGs) installed as a heat-transfer enhancement device. The evaluation is based on the modified single blow method conducted in a specially designed low Reynolds number duct. Three different test core geometries, i.e., fin only, fin-tube without VGs and that with VGs, are studied here. The data of heat transfer and pressure loss taken from the fin only geometry agree well with the empirical correlations, thus validating the present method as used for low Reynolds number regime. The data taken from the finned tube geometries with and without VGs are presented and compared to examine the effect of VGs in the low Reynolds number regime.
Local and overall heat transfer characteristics of fin-flat tube heat exchangers with and without vortex generators are investigated. Local heat transfer coefficients are measured with the heat exchanger model using naphthalene sublimation technique. In case of a fin-flat tube heat exchanger without vortex generators, only the horseshoe vortices formed around tubes augment the heat transfer. On the other hand, longitudinal vortices created artificially by vortex generators enhance heat transfer dramatically in case of a fin-flat tube heat exchanger with vortex generators. Overall heat transfer coefficients are measured with the prototype of the fin-flat tube heat exchanger with and without vortex generators in a wind tunnel and results are compared with those of a fin-circular tube heat exchanger with wavy fin. Friction losses for heat exchangers are also measured and compared. The fin-flat tube heat exchanger with vortex generators is found to be more effective than the fin-circular tube heat exchanger with wavy fin.
Optimization of a heat exchanger with internally finned circular tubes has been performed for three-dimensional periodically fully developed turbulent flow and heat transfer. The design variables of fin number N, fin width ($d_1,d_2$) and fin height(H), are numerically optimized for the limiting conditions of $N=22{\sim}37$, $d_1=0.5{\sim}1.5$ mm, $d_2=0.5{\sim}1.5$ mm, $H=0.1{\sim}1.5$. Due to the periodic boundary conditions along main flow direction, the three layers of meshes are considered. The CFD and the mathematical optimization are coupled to optimize the heat exchanger. The flow and thermal fields are predicted using the finite volume method and the optimization is carried out by using the sequential quadratic programming (SQP) method which is widely used in the constrained nonlinear optimization problem.
As an effort to secure economically viable heat recovery units, innovative fin shapes for industrial boilers are studied for better performance. In the present study a numerical modeling for the analysis of heat exchanger performance is conducted using a commercial software, ANSYS CFX and the results are compared with the experimental data. Out of several candidate fin shapes curved wavy fin is selected for the present study. Both numerical and experimental data are directly compared for heat transfer rate and pressure drop with the assumed constant surface temperature of $60^{\circ}C$. Exhaust gas is obtained from a test apparatus which supplies variable flow rates. The numerical results show reasonable agreements with the experimental data within 10% in terms of both total heat transfer and pressure loss.
