  • Natural gas is converted in to LNG by chilling and liquefying the gas to the temperature of $-162^{\circ}C$, when liquefied, the volume of natural gas is reduced to 1/600 of its standard volume. This gives LNG the advantage in transportation. In this study, the effects of the pressure drop of refrigerant and natural gas in the LNG heat exchanger of cryogenic cascade refrigeration cycle were investigated and then the design criteria for the pressure drop of refrigerant and natural gas of the LNG heat exchanger were proposed. The pressure drop of the cascade liquefaction cycle was investigated and simulated using HYSYS software. The simulation results showed that the pressure drop in the LNG heat exchanger is set to 50 kPa considering the increase in the compressor work and COP of cryogenic cascade liquefaction cycle.

  • The pool water management system, which is installed for purification of the coolant in the pools and the primary cooling system of a research reactor, removes the decay heat from the reactor core when the primary cooling system stops. It also removes the heat generated from the irradiated objects in the service pool and the spent fuels in the spent fuel storage pool to keep the temperature of the pools within a limited value. In this study, the heat exchanger of the pool water management system is designed by CFD method using a commercial code Flowmaster, and the temperature of the pools is estimated along the time to conclude the design and operation method of the pool water management system.

  • Separate heat pipe exchanger is considered as the high thermal transportation equipment, because evaporator and condenser are separately positioned in the long distance. Its characteristics are that the working fluid is circulated naturally by the position height of two exchangers. But the operating characteristics are restricted by the temperature of hot and cold fluid, flow pattern and diameter of vapor line, etc. in this study, the vapor pressure and the minimum height of two exchangers are studied about the factors restricting the operating characteristics.

  • The purpose of this study is to get the formulas of condensation heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop about the water to develop design program for plate type heat exchangers. The single phase flow of cold side was calculated with the correlation of Ko. Condensation heat transfer coefficient model proposed by Annaiev was used and Lockhart model was used to analyze the pressure drop. The calculation algorithm was proposed to calculate heat transfer rate and pressure drop simultaneously. The prediction errors remained within 20% compared to the commercial code in the working range of the plate heat exchangers.

  • This study was carried out to optimize premixed burner and heat exchanger of the condensing gas boiler which can save energy by utilizing latent heat of combustion gas and reduce pollutant in exhaust gas. The heat exchanger of the gas boiler was composed of three parts, which were an upper, lower, and coil heat exchanger. The upper heat exchanger was placed outside of the premixed burner and a lower heat exchanger was located under the upper heat exchanger. And, coil heat exchanger rounded the outer surface of an upper and lower heat exchanger. The boiler designed by this research reaches turn-down ratio 4:1 in the domain of equivalence ratio 0.75${\~}$0.8 and thermal efficiency of $97\%$. Emission of NOx and CO concentration was under 20ppm and 140ppm at equivalence ratio 0.8. When diameter of the burner is replaced from 60mm to 50mm, emission of CO was reduced about 50ppm remarkably.

  • PHE (Process Heat Exchanger) is a key component required to transfer heat energy of $950^{\circ}C$ generated in a VHTR (Very High Temperature Reactor) to the chemical reaction that yields a large quantity of hydrogen. Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute established the helium gas loop for the performance test of components, which are used in the VHTR, and they manufactured a PHE prototype to be tested in the loop. In this study, as part of the hightemperature structural-integrity evaluation of the PHE prototype, which is scheduled to be tested in the helium gas loop, we carried out high-temperature structural-analysis modeling, thermal analysis, and thermal expansion analysis of the PHE prototype. The results obtained in this study will be used to design the performance test setup for the PHE prototype.

  • The IHX (intermediate heat exchanger) of a VHTR (very high-temperature reactor) is a core component that transfers the high heat generated by the VHTR at $950^{\circ}C$ to a hydrogen production plant. Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute manufactured a small-scale prototype of a PCHE (printed circuit heat exchanger) that was being considered as a candidate for the IHX. In this study, as a part of high-temperature structural integrity evaluation of the small-scale PCHE prototype, we carried out high-temperature structural analysis modeling and macroscopic thermal and elastic structural analysis for the small-scale PCHE prototype under small-scale gas-loop test conditions. The modeling and analysis were performed as a precedent study prior to the performance test in the small-scale gas loop. The results obtained in this study will be compared with the test results for the small-scale PCHE. Moreover, these results will be used in the design of a medium-scale PCHE prototype.

  • A PHE (Process Heat Exchanger) is a key component of nuclear hydrogen system for massive production of hydrogen; the PHE transfers the very high temperature heat ($950^{\circ}C$) generated from the VHTR (Very High Temperature Reactor) to a chemical reaction. The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute developed a small-scale gas loop for testing the performance of VHTR components and manufactured a modified PHE prototype for carrying out the testing in the gas loop. In this study, as a part of the evaluation of the high-temperature structural integrity of the modified PHE prototype which is scheduled to test in the gas loop, we carried out high-temperature structural analysis modeling, macroscopic thermal and structural analysis of the PHE prototype under the gas loop test conditions as a precedent study before carrying out the performance test in the gas loop. The results obtained in this study will be used to design the performance test setup for the modified PHE prototype.

  • Recently, condensation heat exchangers have been studied for applications to the passive cooling systems of nuclear plants. To design vertical-type condensation heat exchangers in secondary passive cooling systems, TSCON (Thermal Sizing of CONdenser), a thermal sizing program for a condensation heat exchanger, was developed at KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute). In this study, the existing condensation heat transfer correlation of TSCON was evaluated using 1,157 collected experimental data points from the heat exchanger of a secondary passive cooling system for the case of pure steam condensation. The investigation showed that the Shah correlation, published in 2009, provided the most satisfactory results for the heat transfer coefficient with a mean absolute error of 34.8%. It is suggested that the Shah correlation is appropriate for designing a condensation heat exchanger in TSCON.
