  • The purpose of this work is to optimize composition of mixture refrigerants used in the C3MR (Propane & Mixed Refrigerants) process by a statistical optimization technique. C3MR studied in this work is one of widely used commercial natural gas liquefaction processes with high efficiency. Process simulation was performed in a commercial process simulator and methane ($C_1$), ethane ($C_2$), propane ($C_3$), and nitrogen ($N_2$) were selected as mixed refrigerants. Using the process model, optimum composition of refrigerants mixture was determined via mixture design and central composite design to produce minimum energy consumption. As a result, it was confirmed that energy consumption is reduced down to 11.3% comparing to existing design. It was also compared with heat effectiveness through temperature profile of MCHE (main cryogenic heat exchanger).

  • Following the reactor shutdown, the reactor shutdown cooling system must be designed to supply the coolant sufficiently not only to remove the decay heat but to maintain the adequate cooling rate to protect the reactor equipments. In this study, KDESCENT code for the light water reactor and SOPHT, SDCS codes for the heavy water reactor were compared and analyzed to investigate the cooling capability during the shutdown cooling process. The shutdown cooling system design requirements were satisfied during cooling process for both the SDCP and the HTP modes and the design cooling rate of $2.8^{\circ}C/min$ or below was maintained using the SDC heat exchangers. This study shows that the shutdown cooling system in the Wolsong 2, 3, 4 reactors provides sufficient cooling to maintain the nuclear fuel integrity by removing the decay heat of the nuclear fission product.

  • The High Temperature Superconducting power cables (HTS power cables) become increasingly longer to commercialize the HTS power cable system. Accordingly, demands on refrigerators of large cooling capacity per a unit system have been increased. In Korea, it is currently imported from abroad with the high price due to insufficient domestic technologies. In order to commercialize the HTS power cables, it is necessary to develop the refrigerators with large cooling capacity. The Brayton refrigerators are composed of recuperative heat exchangers, compressors and cryogenic turbo expanders. The most directly considering the efficiency of the Brayton refrigerator, it depends on performance of the cryogenic turbo expander. Rotating at high speed in cryogenic temperature, the cryogenic turbo expanders lower temperature by expanding high pressure of a helium or neon gas. In this paper, the reverse Brayton cycle is designed and the cryogenic turbo expander is designed in accordance with the thermodynamic cycle.

  • This study was conducted to develop the heat exchanger by utilizing the heat energy of underground water(15℃), which might be used for cooling and heating system of the agricultural facilities. We developed the heat exchanger by using the parallel type plat fin tube made of Aluminum(Al 6063), which was named Aloo-Heat(No. 0247164, offered by Korean Intellectual property Office). The trial manufactures were made from Aloo-heat which was 600mm, 700mm length respectively, and It were welded to the end "U" type in order to direct flow of the underground water. The performance test was carried out under the condition of open space and room temperature with the change of flow rate of the underground water and air. The results are as follows. 1. The trial manufactures had convection heat value from 33 to 156 W/m2℃, and It was coincided with design assumption. 2. The amount of energy transfer was increased with the increment of the area of heat transfer, the air flow, the gap of temperature inlet & outlet the underground water and the air. 3. The heat value was 6,825W when the air flow was 6,000m3/h and the gap of temperature between inlet and outlet of the underground water was 6℃, and It dropped from 25.8℃ to 23.2℃(-2.6℃ difference). The convection heat value was 88.5W/m2℃. 4. The heat value was 2.625W when the air flow was 4,000m3/h and the gap of temperature between inlet and outlet the underground water was 2℃, and It dropped from 27℃ to 22.5℃(-4.5℃ difference). The convection heat value was 33.6W/m2℃. 5. Correlation values(R2) of the testing heat values of the trial manufacture type I, II, and III were 0.9141, 0.8935, and 0.9323 respectively, and correlation values(R2) of the amount of the air flow 6,000m3/h, 5,000m3/h, 4,000m3/h were 0.9513, 0.9414, and 0.9003 respectively.

  • Performance analysis of a 50KW turbo-generator gas turbine engine with a recuperator was studied. Recuperated cycle has been employed to meet maximum fuel economy and ultra low emissions especially for military and vehicular engines. From thermodynamic stand point, it is known that recuperative cycle can contribute most to enhance thermal cycle efficiency for the Pressure ratios under 10 and of comparatively low turbine inlet temperature. Efficiency of a simple cycle with a recuperator increases relatively about 30% than without one at effectiveness of 0.5. Pressure losses in the heat exchanger less than 5.2% is considered in the design process. A tubular type heat exchanger is selected for this particular engine because it can provide simple construction as well as structural sturdiness and excellent leak tightness.

  • Middle-sized $CO_2$ water heater having compressor power of 7.45 kW was designed, and its performances were experimentally tested. Besides, optimum design of the $CO_2$ water heater was conducted by cycle simulation. When ambient temperature of $7^{\circ}C$ and hot water outlet temperature of $80^{\circ}C$ the $CO_2$ water heater showed the COP of 3.2. As hot water temperature increased the COP is getting decreased due to significant increase of compressor power consumption compared to increasing rate of heating capacity. When ambient temperature increased from $-3^{\circ}C$ to $12^{\circ}C$ the COP increased by 30%. The optimum components design of a gas cooler, an internal heat exchanger, and an evaporator were conducted, and the experimental correlation between amount of EEV opening and ambient temperature, and hot water temperature was suggested.

  • This study is to systematically analyze the effect of various kinds of design parameters on heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of heat exchanger with a slit fin. TAGUCHI method, known to us as a very reasonable tool in the parametric study, is employed in the present work. Experimental factors have been limited to seven cases, considering the production of sample and the cost. The 18 kinds of large scale models are made by compounding level on each factor and the heat transfer and flow characteristics on each model has been analyzed. The present results allow us to be able to quantitatively estimate the various parameters affecting the heat exchanger performance, and main factors for an optimum design of a heat exchanger have been selected. The optimum design value on each parameter was presented and the reproducibility on the results was guaranteed.

  • In this paper, a cooling system of high-power propulsion motor with Energy Saving System(ESS) is described. Normally, the cooling system for ship consists of fresh water pump, sea water pump, 3-way valve and cooler. In the cooling system, F.W(Fresh Water) and S.W(Sea Water) pump is operated on rated rpm, and the 3-way valve is controlled for preventing over-cooling. So, the consumption power of pump's motor is changed according to a sea water temperature. In the proposed cooling system, F.W. pump and S.W pump is controlled by inverter, and it is can be reduced the consumption power. Also, it is proved with simulation.

  • The evaporation pressure drop of $CO_2$ (R-744) in a horizontal tube was investigated experimentally. The experiments were conducted without oil in a closed refrigerant loop which was driven by a magnetic gear pump. The main components of the refrigerant loop are a receiver, a variable-speed pump. a mass flow meter, a pre-heater and evaporator (test section). The test section consists of a smooth. horizontal stainless steel tube of 7.75 mm inner diameter. The experiments were conducted at mass flux of 200 to $500\;kg/m^{2}s$, saturation temperature of $-5^{\circ}C\;to\;5^{\circ}C$. and heat flux of 10 to $40\;kW/m^2$. The test results showed the evaporation pressure drop of $CO_2$ are highly dependent on the vapor qualify, heat flux and saturation temperature. The evaporation pressure drop of $CO_2$ is very lower than that of R-22. In comparison with test results and existing correlations. the best fit of the present experimental data is obtained with the correlation of Choi et al. But existing correlations failed to predict the evaporation pressure drop of $CO_2$. Therefore, it is necessary to develop reliable and accurate predictions determining the evaporation pressure drop of $CO_2$ in a horizontal tube.
