Charging-Discharging Behavior and Performance of AGM Lead Acid Battery/EDLC Module for x-HEV (x-HEV용 AGM 연축전지/EDLC 통합모듈의 성능 및 충방전 거동)

  • To cope with automobile exhaust gas regulations, ISG and charging control systems are applied to HEV vehicles for the purpose of improving fuel economy. These systems require quick charge-discharge performance of high current. Therefore, a Module of the AGM battery with high energy density and EDLC(Electric Double Layer Capacitor) with high power density are constructed to study the charging and discharging behavior. In CCA, which evaluates the starting performance at -18 ℃ & 30 ℃ with high current, EDLC contributed for about 8 sec at the beginning. At 0 ℃ CA (Charge Acceptance), the initial Charging current of the AGM/EDLC Module, is twice that of the AGM lead acid battery. To play the role of EDLC during high-current rapid charging and discharging, the condition of the AGM lead-acid battery is optimally maintained. As a result of a Standard of Battery Association of Japan (SBA) S0101 test, the service life of the Module of the AGM Lead Acid Battery/EDLC is found to improve by 2 times compared to that of the AGM Lead Acid Battery.

  • A navigation aid buoy is a kind of safety facility for maritime navigation with a purpose of leading the vessels for navigating, docking and sail off. An advanced rechargeable battery is required for stable power supply for navigation aid buoy as the high magnitude LED lamps, real time location/control for navigation aids and e-Navigation support systems with maritime climate observation equipments have recently been deployed. This study is focused on the lithium battery, especially lithium polymer battery which is believed to be safer than the other types of batteries. The lithium polymer battery reviewed in this study is designed with $LiFePO_4$-based cathode, which has superior safety features to the oxide-based cathodes. Besides, a 3.6kWh battery pack has been built with the above-mentioned unit cells for the purpose of comparative research with lead acid battery system.

  • In this paper, a high quality battery charge-discharge controller for new & renewal energy power generation system is designed. The proposed new controller has a function to manipulate the battery charging current precisely and it is suitable for various batteries including Lead-Acid battery generally used for solar power generation system. LCD display function is implemented to enhanced the user's convenience and minimization of standby power consumption is realized by optimal design using CAD tools.

Development of Hybrid (Sb/Ca) Flooded Lead-Acid Battery for Minimizing Water Loss (감액 특성 향상을 위한 하이브리드(Sb/Ca) 액식 연축전지 개발)

  • One disadvantage of deep cycle flooded lead-acid batteries is increasing water loss caused by use of (+) Pb-Sb / (-) Pb-Sb alloy grid. Water loss is generated by the emission of hydrogen gas from the (-) electrode during battery charging. In this paper, we maintain cycle life aspect through the development of hybrid flooded lead-acid batteries to which a (+) Pb-Sb / (-) Pb-Ca grid is applied and deal with the improvement of water loss. The amount of water loss compared to that of the (-) Pb-Sb grid decreased when Ca was added to the (-) Pb grid. For the (-) Pb-Ca grid, it was confirmed that the time to reach 0.0 V, at which water decomposition occurs, was increased compared to that of the (-) Pb-Sb grid at the NPV (Negative Potential Voltage). In the cycle life test conducted with the BCI (Battery Council International) standard, compared to the (+) Pb-Ca grid, the (+) Pb-Sb grid increased the life cycle of the batteries and the (+) Pb-Ca grid showed an early end of life due to PbO corrosion layer generation, as determined through SEM / EDS and Tear Down analysis. In conclusion, by addition of Sb to (+) Pb grid and Ca to (-) Pb grid, we developed a hybrid flooded lead-acid battery that meets user requirements to improve water loss characteristics and preserve cycle life characteristics.

  • This paper deals with the state of charge(SOC) and life cycle evaluation algorithm for lead-acid battery, which is essential factor of the electric vehicle(EV) and the stabilization of renewable energy in the smart grid. In order to perform the effective operation of the lead-acid battery, SOC and life cycle evaluation algorithm is required. Specific gravity with the change of electrolyte temperature inside battery case should be obtained to evaluate the SOC of lead-acid battery, however it is difficult to measure the electrolyte temperature of sealed type lead-acid battery. To overcome this problem, this paper proposes the equation of thermal transmission to compensate internal temperature of the lead-acid battery. Also, it is difficult to exactly evaluate the life cycle of battery, depending on the operation conditions of lead-acid battery such as charging and discharging state, self discharging rate and environmental issue. In order to solve the problem, this paper presents the concept for gravity accumulation of charge and discharge cycle, which is the value converted at $20^{\circ}C$. By using the proposed algorithm, this paper propose the test device based on the Labview software. The simulation results show that it is a practical tool for the maintenance of lead-acid battery in the field of industry.

  • Sealed flooded lead acid batteries are becoming popular in the industry because of their low cost as compared to their counterparts. State of Charge (SOC) estimation has always been an important factor in battery management systems. For the accurate SOC estimation, open circuit voltage (OCV) hysteresis should be modelled accurately. The hysteresis phenomenon of the sealed flooded lead acid battery is discussed in detail and its ultimate modeling is proposed based on the conventional parallelogram method. The SOC estimation is performed by using Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) while the parameters of the battery are estimated using Auto Regressive with external input (ARX) method. The validity of the proposed method is verified by the experimental results. The SOC estimation error by the proposed method is less than 3 % all wing the 125hr test.

  • Recently, researches on SOC(State Of Charge) of batteries are being increased. Techniques of measuring the battery SOC is essential to researches on increasing cycle life of batteries and to electric vehicle battery charging systems. The surface charge phenomenon of lead storage batteries and the needs of SOC measuring techniques are considered. Features of SOC measuring techniques that have been recently developed are also considered.

  • 대우자동차는 1992년 이래로 전기자동차 개발사업을 추진하고 있으며 1996년에는 전기자동차의 Fleet 운영시험을 위해 10대의 씨에로 개조형 전기자동차를 제작하였다. 이 씨에로 전기자동차에는 고성능 연축전지, 교류유도전동기, 탑재형 충전기 및 전동조향배력장치 등이 장착되어 있으며 고등기술연구원에서는 전기자동차의 Fleet 운영시험의 일환으로 시외 일반도로 운행조건에서 전기자동차의 에너지비용을 조사하기 위한 연구를 수행하였다. 두 대의 씨에로 전기자동차를 용인시와 안성군 지역의 일반도로에서 1998년 4월부터 운행하였으며 이 운행시험 결과를 바탕으로 일반도로 주행조건에서 씨에로 전기자동차의 에너지비용과 동급의 가솔린자동차인 씨에로 1.5DOHC A/T 차량의 에너지비용을 계산하였다. 두 대의 전기자동차중 한 대의 연비는 5.7 km/kWh이었으며, 다른 한 대의 연비는 5.8 km/kWh이었다. 이에 비해 가솔린자동차의 연비는 13.7 km/l로 년간 20,000 km를 주행한다고 가정할 때 가솔린자동차의 년간 주행비용은 전기자동차의 3.4∼18.0배가 되는 것으로 나타났다. 이 시험을 통해 향후 전기자동차의 개발을 위해 유용하고 가치있는 많은 데이터를 얻었다.

  • It is difficult to analyze the charging characteristics of the lead-acid battery, because of the influences by various non-linear and time-variant parameters. In this study, the charging characteristics of high capacity industrial lead-acid battery 630 Ah was investigated through experiments with respect to the variations of temperature and the aged state of battery during the charging process. The database of those characteristics is established from the results of experiments, and the fuzzy logic charging algorithm is suggested using them. The results of experiment shows that the industrial lead-acid batteries can be always fully charged within the saved charging time by the proposed charging control algorithm adapting to the variations of charging condition. This new charging concept will be useful for developing the advanced battery charger improving the efficiency of storing electricity.

  • The proposed algorithm has produced the rules of relationship between the load voltage, current, discharging electric power and ampere-hours, electric power capacity of battery on the basis of the data. Which were acquired through the battery discharging experiment that is defined by the battery's ambient temperature and various load conditions. Especially, by calculating the parameter of second order polynomial equation relation between the remaining capacity and the electric power, the algorithm is proposed adapting for the discharging pattern. And as the depth of discharging is increasing, the calculation-method of electric power is applied to decrease the accumulated error in the calculation method of capacity accumulation. Also, the proposed algorithm has compensated the temperature considering the capacity change of battery to the temperature.
