  • The bedrock beneath the Chokseongnu pavilion consists of sandstone with alternate dark-gray to light-brown siltstone and dark-gray shale of the Jinju Formation, where bedding is well developed toward the Chokseongmun gate. Large to small joints and overbreak from the erosion weathering have been developed in the bedrock. Besides, water leakage from development of discontinuity planes, fragmentation of shale, crack and joint by tree roots are observed on the bedrock. While shale and siltstone showed high sensitivity in physical and chemical weathering, respectively, sandstone indicated the highest weathering sensitivity in both. As the results of structural stability analysis, the whole bedrock has high instability in wedge failures, and especially section No. II slope is more instable than section No. I. Therefore, it is necessary for the bedrock to be strengthened by improvement method for soft foundations and the surface reinforcement. The trees causing mechanical collapse of the bedrock should be also removed and a water flow prevention measure or a water exhaust are required.

  • Building construction trends have been changed dramatically in terms of size and mass. With the need to maximize land usage, there has been an increase in the construction of high-rise buildings. This affects not only the entire construction duration and cost, but also subsequent construction activities, such as work to increase underground facilities and in reclamation land area construction. These types of site conditions require soft ground reinforcement and the proper uplift water pressure treatment. In general, two kinds of methods have been used for uplift water pressure treatment systems. However, there have been some problems arising as the result of a lack of research and analysis on underground construction techniques, and a reliance on experiments over actual survey and analysis of site conditions. This paper focused on the problems of conventional selection procedure, by analyzing drawings and proposing a kind of modeling for a reasonable procedure. The results were applied to OO project as a sample construction case to be verified in this research. The initial plan in the case project was the Rock Anchor System. However, as there were terrible miscalculations of basic site conditions that had an extraordinary influence on the underground water level, such as the site's proximity to the Han-river, it was necessary to change the plan to include apermanent drainage system. This achieved a direct construction cost reduction \ 406,702,000 and a maximum sayings of 4% of operational cost, based on the 50-year building Life Cycle Cost.

  • The large scaled field test by prefabricated vertical drains was performed to evaluate the superiority of vertical discharge capacity for drain materials through compare and analyze the time-settlement behavior with drain spacing and the compression index and consolidation coefficient obtained by laboratory experiments and field monitoring system. 1. The relation of measurement settlement($S_m$) versus design settlement($S_t$) and measurement consolidation ratio($U_m$) versus design consolidation ratio($U_t$) were shown $S_m=(1.0{\sim}1.1)S_t$, $U_m=(1.13{\sim}1.17)U_t$ at 1.0m drain spacing and $S_m=(0.7{\sim}0.8)S_t$, $U_m=(0.92{\sim}0.99)U_t$ at l.5m drain spacing, respectively. 2. The relation of field compressing index($C_{cfield}$) and virgin compression index($V_{cclab.}$) was shown $C_{cfield}=(1.0{\sim}1.2)V_{cclab.}$, But it was nearly same value when considered the error with determination method of virgin compression index and prediction method of total settlement. 3. Field consolidation coefficient was larger than laboratory consolidation coefficient, and the consolidation coefficient ratio($C_h/C_v$) were $C_h=(2.4{\sim}3.0)C_v$. $C_h=(3.5{\sim}4.3)C_v$ at 1.0m and 1.5m drain spacing and increased with increasing of drain spacing. 4. The evaluation of vertical discharge capacity with drain spacing from the results of the consolidation coefficient ratio showed largely superior in case the Mebra drain and Amer drain than other drain materials at 1.0m and 1.5m drain spacing, while the values showed nearly same value in case same drain spacing.

  • Domestic thermal power plant fly ash is at a situation which emissions are increasing every year. Comparing to Fly Ash, Bottom Ash is only 15 %, but it's recycling rate is low, so most of them is being buried in the ground. However, landfill site of every power plant is full, and the construction of a new landfill is difficult. To solve this problem, the best solution is to use Bottom Ash as a landfill of large-scale civil engineering projects. The purpose of this study was to investigate the compression strength behavior characteristics of weak clay and uniaxial compression test to examine the applicability of surface soil solidification method of mixed soils mixed with industrial waste coal ash and weak clay which is buried in bulk. As a result of the test, the fluidity of the Mixed soil with clay + bottom ash + cement was improved to 200 mm at the water content of 91-92 %. The uniaxial compressive strength was also good for the mixed soils (clay + bottom ash + cement) meeting the required strength of 159 kN/㎡ at 28 days. However, the other samples did not meet the required strength. In this study, the prediction equations for the compression strength behavior by cement and curing period were presented.
