  • The researches on the parameter estimation for storage function method have been conducted for a long time using different methods. However, the determination of the optimal parameters takes a long time and there is a controversy that the proposed optimal parameters do not likely represent the physical characteristics of watershed. In this study, the characteristics of the continuity and storage function equation was analyzed and sensitivities were evaluated. As the result, the only optimal solution is suggested among several local optimums. It is also shown that the lag time is able to be determined using the direct runoff starting time of the watershed. From the sensitivity analysis, it is also proved that the determination of the lag time is very important and the only optimal solution could be found easily after selecting the lag time. Therefore, unlike the traditional optimization method, the proposed method does not take a long time to find the optimal solution which is depending on the characteristics of the rainfall events. The fixed coefficient method which is a method to estimate the optimal parameters of storage function method has been modified using the proposed method. Therefore, the practical efficiency to apply storage function method could be enhanced by applying the proposed method. While the traditional method takes care only the error of the runoff hydrograph, it is very important that the proposed method considers the characteristics of the watershed.

  • This paper presents a reservoir operation plan coupled with storage forecasting model to maintain a target storage and a critical storage. The observed storage data from 1990 to 2001 in the Geum-Gang agricultural reservoir in Korea have been applied to the low flow frequency analysis, which yields storage for each return period. Two year return period drought storage is then designated as the target storage and ten year return period drought storage as the critical storage. Storage in reservoir should be forecasted to perform reasonable reservoir operation. The predicted storage can be effectively utilized to establish a reservoir operation plan. In this study the autoregressive error (ARE) model and the ARIMA model are adopted to predict storage of reservoir. The ARIMA model poorly generated reservoir storage in series because only observed storage data were used, but the autoregressive error model made to enhance the reliability of the forecasted storage by applying the explanation variables to the model. Since storages of agricultural reservoir with respect to time have been affected by irrigation area, high or mean temperature, precipitation, previous storage and wind velocity, the autoregressive error model has been adopted to analyze the relationship between storage at a period and affecting factors for storage at the period. Since the equation for predicting storage at a period by the autoregressive error model is similar to the continuity equation, the predicting storage equation may be practical. The results from compared the actual storage in 2002 and the predicted storage in the Geum-Gang reservoir show that forecasted storage by the autoregressive error model is reasonable.

  • Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to investigate the effects of the processing parameters on supercritical $CO_2\;(SC-CO_2)$. extraction of total carotenoids and ${\beta}$-cyptoxanthin from Citrus unshiu press cake. The parameters tested were $SC-CO_2$ pressure, dynamic extraction time, and concentration of ethanol added as the modifier to $CO_2$. Experimental data correlated well with the processing parameters (p<0.01), and there was a high statistically significant multiple regression relationship for the extraction of total carotenoids and ${\beta}-cyrptoxanthin$ ($R^2=0.9789$ and 0.9796, respectively). The optimal processing conditions were extraction pressure 33.4 and 37.3 MPa, extraction time 39.6 and 41.0 min, ethanol concentration 18.6 and 17.0% for total carotenoids and ${\beta}-cryptozanthin$, respectively. Maximum extraction yields predicted by RSM were 61.1 and 95.8% ppm, respectively. The extraction yield of total carotenoids increased asymptotically with the increase of the extraction pressure. It increased in proportion to extraction time and concentration of the cosolvent. The extraction yield of ${\beta}-cryptoxanthin$ increased with extraction pressure, extraction time, and concentration of the cosolvent. The extraction time and the concentration of the cosolvent, and the interaction between extraction time and the concentration of the cosolvent significantly affected the extraction yields of carotenoids from C. unshiu press cake.

  • The crustal structure of the southern part of the Korean peninsula has been investigated based on the results of processing and anlaysis of gravity data. The processing techniques involve i) seperation of regional and residual anomalies by polynomial fittings, ii) power spectral analyses to determine the mean depth to the crustal base, iii) a filtering operation called "high-cut filtering and resampling," and iv) downward continuation to determine the undulation of the crustal base. The Bouguer anomalies show a lineation in the NE-SW direction which is the same as that of most mountains and tectonic lines of this area. The mean crustal depth is found to be 34km. The depth of the crustal base is varying in the estimated range of 26km to 36km with a thinner crust below the east coast than that of the west coast. The relief of the crustal base is appeared to be correlated with the regional surface topography. The linear regression relations computed between elevations and gravity anomalies indicate that the crust of this area seems to be not in perfect isostatic equilibrium but a little undercompensated state.

  • Debris flows occur in mountainous areas due to heavy rains resulting from climate change and result in disasters in the downstream area. The purpose of this study is to estimate the impact force of a debris flow when a check dam according is installed in various locations in the channel of a highly mountainous area. A Finite Differential Element Method (FDM) model was used to simulate the erosion and deposition based on the equation for the mass conservation and momentum conservation while considering the continuity of the fluid. The peak impact force from the debris flow occurred at 0 to 5 sec and 15 to 20 sec. When the supplied water discharge was increased, greater peak impact force was generated at 16 to 19 sec. This means that when increasing the water supply, the velocity of the debris flow became faster, which results in increased energy of the consolidation between the particles of the water and the sediment made. If a number of check dams were to be set up, it would be necessary to investigate the impact force at each location of the check dam. The results of this study could provide useful information in predicting the impact force of the debris flow and in installing the check dams in appropriate locations.

  • Purpose : Effects to predict tile progression of chronic renal failure (CRF) in children, using mathematical models based on transformations of serum creatinine (Scr) concentration, have failed. Error may be introduced by age-related variations in creatinine production rate. Height (Ht) is a reliable reference for creatinine production in children. Thus, Scr, factored for Ht, could provide a more accurate predictive model. We examined this hypothesis. Methods : The progression of of was detected in 63 children who proceeded to end-stage renal disease. Derivatives of Scr, including 1/Scr, log Scr & Ht/Scr, were defined fir the period Scr was between 2 and 5 mg/dl. Regression equation were used to predict the time, in months, to Scr > 10 mg/dl. The prediction error (PE) was defined as the predicted time minus actual time for each Scr transformation. Result : The PE for Ht/Scr was lower than the PE for either 1/Scr or log Scr (median: -0.01, -2.0 & +10.6 mos respectively; P<0.0001). For children with congenital renal diseases, the PE for Ht/Scr was also lower than for the other two transformations (median: -1.2, -3.2 & +8.2 mos respectively; P<0.0001). However, the PEs for children with glomerular diseases was not as clearly different (median: +0.9, +0.5 & +9.9 respectively). In children < 13 yrs, PE for Ht/Scr was tile lowest, while in older children, 1/Scr provided the lowest PE but not significantly different from that for Ht/Scr. The logarithmic transformation tended to predict a slower progression of CRF than actually occurred. Conclusion : Scr, floored for Ht, appears to be a useful model to predict the rate of progression of CRF, particularly in the prepubertal child with congenital renal disease.

  • This paper has focused on deriving a GPS based geodetic network adjustment strategy to continuously determine coordinate sets of the national geodetic control points. After domestic literature review on the topic and overseas case studies about countries that recently reformed their geodetic infrastructure have been carried out, a simplified geodetic network consisting of two layers, namely GPS active and passive network, has been proposed to maximize effectiveness of the network adjustment through reducing the number of the passive points. Furthermore, a GPS data processing and network adjustment procedure has been derived to support the continuous management scheme. While a scheme for the active layer adopts a sequential least squares adjustment based on a multi-baseline, that of the passive layer employs a multi-session adjustment technique with respect to 3-dimensional baseline vectors. Finally, experimental adjustment against a network comprising 24 active and 6,900 passive stations has been performed to demonstrate the efficiency and the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • The complex nature of low flow transport and transformation of nonconservative pollutants in natural streams has been investigated using a numerical solution of a proposed mathematical model that is based on a pair of mass balance equations describing the advection, dispersion, decay and mass exchange mechanisms in streams and in storage zones. In the present study, a mathematical model (named "Storage-Transformation Model") has been developed to predict adequately the non-Fickian nature of mixing and transformation mechanisms for decaying substances in natural streams under low flow conditions. Comparisons of the computed concentration-time curves with the measured data show that the Storage-Transformation Model yields better agreements in general shape, peak concentration and time to peak than the conventional 1-D dispersion model. The proposed model shows significant improvement over the 1-D dispersion model in predicting natural transport and transformation processes in streams through pools and riffles.

  • In this paper, in order to derive the current-voltage characteristics of n-AlGaN/GaN HEMTs with the piezoelectric and spontaneous polarizations, we suggested analytical solutions for the two-dimensional Poisson equation in the AlGaN and GaN regions by taking into account the longitudinal field variation, field-dependent mobility, and the continuity condition of the channel current flowing in the quantum well. Obtained expressions for long and short channel devices would be applicable to the entire operating regions in a unified manner. Simulation results show that the drain saturation current increases and the cutoff voltage decreases as drain voltage increases. Compared with the conventional models, the present model seems to provide more reasonable explanation for the drain-induced threshold voltage roll-off and the channel length modulation effect.
