  • This study was performed to clarify the formation procedure of continuous voids in cellular concrete, and to examine the effect of a foaming agent on the manufacture of cellular concrete with continuous voids. By the experiments, it was determined that cellular concrete to be formed with continuous voids is influenced by temperature, viscosity and flowability of cement paste, and stability of air voids, and is formed in accordance with cohesion of air voids. It was also found that separate voids are formed at an added amount of air voids corresponding to 2 % or less of the amount of cement, whereas an antifoaming phenomenon occurs when the added amount of air voids exceeds 9 % of the amount of cement. In products with respective cement fineness of 3,000, 6,000, and 8,000㎠/g, a higher compressive strength was exhibited at a higher cement fineness. The continuous void ratio depending on a variation in fineness was 38 %, 52 %, and 22 % in those products, respectively. That is, a highest continuous void ratio was exhibited at a cement fineness of 6,000㎠/g. When the water-cement ratio was reduced from 45% to 25%, the compressive strength of the cellular concrete was increased from 15 kgf/㎠ to 20 kgf/㎠ Thus, the reduction in water-cement ratio was effective in achieving an increase in strength without any variation in the specific gravity of the cellular concrete.

  • In this study, a virtual specimen with a linear continuous gradient of void ratio (FGM: Functional Graded Material) is constructed using low-order probability functions of two real cement paste specimens. Two real specimens with difference void ratios are taken from X-ray CT to construct the virtual specimen. A virtual specimen with a gradient void distribution, whose average void ratio is between void ratios of two homogeneous real specimens, is constructed using a stochastic optimization approach. The void ratio distribution is assumed to be linear, and continuously varies in the vertical direction. In this study, a gradient term of void ratio is incorporated into the objective function as well as low-order probability functions from the previous research. To confirm the effect of gradient void distribution on the material response, air permeability is evaluated using finite element analysis. The analysis results are compared with experimental results, and confirm the effect of gradient void distribution on permeability.

  • Limestone mine waste was used as a aggregate far permeable concrete. Void ratio, continuous void ratio, coefficient of permeability, compressive strength and flexural strength of concrete were measured and then the relationship between porosity and strength properties was investigated. Void ratio, continuous void ratio and strength properties of permeable concrete were greatly influenced by the grain size of aggregate and void filling ratio in comparison with the containing ratio of limestone mine waste. Furthermore, void ratio showed a good relation with continuous void ratio, and porosity of permeable concrete indicated a good relation with strength properties also. The coefficient of permeability of permeable concrete using limestone waste was over 0.2 cm/sec and was excellent result in comparison with normal concrete. Therefore, it could be expected that the limestone mine waste would be utilized as aggregate for pavement concrete, green concrete and water resource specie concrete in the results of this study.

  • This study was performed to manufacture a rigid sound absorbing material by increasing the continuous void ratio of cellular concrete, thereby achieving an increase in sound absorption ratio and an enhancement in strength of the cellular concrete. By the experiments, it was determined that an increase in sound absorption ratio is achieved by increasing the added amount of air voids, thereby increasing the continuous void ratio. When the material had a thickness of 5 cm, a satisfactory average sound absorption ratio of 70% was obtained at a continuous void ratio of 40% or more. An increase in the thickness of the sound absorbing material resulted in an increase in sound absorption ratio in a super bass range. The specific gravity of cellular concrete meeting an average sound absorption ratio of 70% was 0.4 at a material thickness of 5 cm, and 0.6 or less at a material thickness of 7 cm. The compressive strength of the cellular concrete having a specific gravity of 0.4 meeting an average sound absorption ratio of 70% or more was 1.37 Mpa at a cement fineness of 3,000. This compressive strength was increased to 3.34 MPa at a cement fineness of 8,000. Accordingly, it was determined that the compressive strength of cellular concrete having continuous voids increases with a higher cement fineness.

  • Matrix diffusion from planar fractures was studied mathematically and through physical model experiments. Mathematical models were developed to simulate diffusion from 2D and 3D instantaneous disk sources and a 3D continuous disk source. The models were based on analytical solutions previously developed by Carslaw and Jaeger (1959). The mathematical simulations indicated that the 2D scenario produces significantly different results from the 3D scenario, the time for mass disappearance is significantly larger for continuous sources than for instantaneous sources, the normalized concentration generally decreased over time for instantaneous sources while it increased over time for continuous sources, diffusion rates decrease significantly over time and space, and the normalized mass loss from the source zone never reaches 1 for continuous sources due to the semi-infinite integral. The simulations also showed that disappearance times increase exponentially with increasing source radii and matrix porosity, and decrease with increasing aqueous-phase NAPL solubilities.

  • This study is part of an ongoing research project on the development of a sound-absorbing lightweight foamed concrete manufactured by a hydro-thermal reaction between silica and calcium. As the silica source, pulverized bottom ash was used, and as several cementitious powders of ordinary portland cement, alumina cement and calcium hydroxide were used. Manufacture of foamed concrete was accomplished using the pre-foaming method to make a continuous pore system, which is the method of making the foam by using a foaming agent, then making the slurry by mixing the foam, water, and powders. The experiment factors are W/B, foam agent dilution ratio, and foam ratio, and test items are compressive strength, dry density, void ratio, and absorption rate, as evaluated by NRC. The experiment results showed that the sound absorption of lightweight foamed concrete satisfied NRC requirements for the absorbing materials in most of the experiments. It is thus concluded that foam ratio was the most dominant factor, and significantly affected all properties of lightweight foamed concrete in this study. W/B rarely affected total void ratio and continuous void ratio as well as compressive strength, and dry density and foam agent dilution ratio also had little effect onalmost all properties. The analysis of the correlation between NRC, absorption time, continuous void ratio, and absorption time showed that the interrelationship of the continuous void ratio was high.

  • The present study is mainly aimed at securing adequate pores which are applicable to the aquatic environment and satisfying the required strength of porous concrete as a structure by substituting pumice for crushed stone which is usually used for the fabrication of porous concrete. Accordingly, in order to deduce the optimum mixing conditions applicable to the aquatic environment, we sought to evaluate the porosity, coefficient of permeability and compressive strength of porous concrete based on the target porosity and the mixing factors for pumice. By examining the porosity and coefficient of permeability of porous concrete and the physical properties of its compressive strength based on the target porosity and the mixing factors for pumice, it is judged that the optimum mixtures for porous concrete applicable to the aquatic environment which satisfy both the necessity of securing adequate pores and the required strength for porous concrete as a structure are PC I I-10-0, PC I I-10-5 and PC I I-10-10.

  • Based on Maxwell-Eucken(ME) model, which is one of structural models, a new model for predicting the effective thermal conductivity of variably saturated porous materials is proposed. The new model is a linear combination of three ME models having matrix, water, and air as a continuous phase. The coefficient of the corresponding linear equation is defined by a parameter referred to as 'the continuity coefficient', which provides a relative degree of continuity of each phase. The continuity coefficient of matrix is assumed to be linearly proportional to porosity. The model can be linear or nonlinear depending on how the continuity coefficients of water and air vary with water saturation. The feasibility of the proposed model was examined by both numerical and experimental results. Both linear and nonlinear models showed a high accuracy of prediction with $R^2$ values of 0.86-0.98 and 0.88-0.99, respectively. The numerical and experimental results also showed that the continuity coefficient of matrix was linearly proportional to porosity. Therefore, the proposed prediction model can be effectively used to estimate effective thermal conductivity of unsaturated porous materials by measuring porosity, water content and mineralogical compositions of matrix.
