  • 접촉발화성 액체추진제를 사용하는 소형 추진기관의 성능을 확인하기 위해 핵심 부품의 상온 성능 시험 및 추진기관 조립품의 연소성능시험을 실시하여 추력 400 파운드급의 로켓엔진의 설계성능을 확인하였다. 로켓엔진의 성능측정은 요소분사기의 미립화, 혼합성능의 측정을 위한 상온수류시험과 추진기관 조립체의 지상연소시험으로 실시하였으며, 연소성능은 산화제로 질산을 연료로는 아민계 혼합물로 구성된 접촉발화형 이원 액체추진제를 사용하여 가압방식에 의해 연소실에 분사하는 방법으로 수행하였다. 성능시험결과는 설계성능 및 이상성능과 비교함으로서 이들의 상관관계를 파악하였다.

  • 액체추진제 로켓엔진에서 분사기의 미립화 및 혼합 특성과 그에 따른 연소 특성은 성능과 안정성을 결정하는 중요한 파라미터이며 분사기는 제한된 설계 조건하에서 최대의 열방출율을 발휘하도록 설계되어야 한다. 여기서 연소효율은 연료와 산화제의 혼합특성과 충돌 분무의 미립화의 정도에 의해 결정되므로 충돌 분무 유동성의 혼합, 미립화 특성과 이에 따른 인조성능 특성을 명확하게 밝힘으로써 최대 엔진성능을 위한 설계가 가능하게 된다. 분사기의 설계에는 분사요소형태, 분사공의 형상 및 유동시스템 등이 포함되며 특히 분사요소 형태의 선택에는 추진제, 연소실냉각방법, 연소실 형상, 자동조건 및 엔진의 수명 등이 중요한 제한조건으로 고려된다. 이런 형태의 분사 요소들 중, 충돌형 분사기는 저장성 추진제를 사용하는 중, 저추력의 액체추진제 로켓엔진에 주로 사용된다. 이 분사형태는 미립화 성능이 높지 않고, 분사공 직경 및 운동량비에 따른 혼합성능이 만감하며 blow apart 등에 의한 열부하 혹은 안정성에 대한 문제가 있으나 양호한 혼합효율, 신뢰성과 제작의 용이함으로 인하여 광범위하게 사용된다.

  • Combustion test results of 1/2.5-scale thrust chamber for 75tonf-class liquid rocket engine were described. The thrust chamber has chamber pressure of 60 bar, propellant mass flow rate of 89 kg/s, and nozzle expansion ratio of 12. The combustion tests were conducted to verify the combustion performance, the regenerative cooling performance and the durability of thrust chamber at design point condition, and then were performed to confirm the operation and the combustion performance at low combustion pressure condition. All the tests had been successfully executed without the damage of the hardware. These test results present a possibility of hot firing test at low combustion pressure condition, and can be used as fundamental data to predict the combustion performance at design point condition for 75 tonf thrust chamber.

  • Combustion performance characteristics of subscale high-pressure combustor were investigated at 70 bar combustion pressure. All tests were successfully performed without any damage on the combustor. The mixing characteristics and distribution pattern of the injectors were found to have considerable influence on the combustion performance. The characteristic velocity of the combustor was higher in the injector with internal mixing than that of external mixing and in the injector with smaller mass flowrate. The pressure fluctuations at the propellant manifolds and the combustion chamber were measured to be less than 3% of the mean combustion pressure to meet the combustion stability criterion and to prove stable combustion characteristics of the combustor.

  • A 30-tonf-class fullscale thrust chamber for the application to a LEO SLV has been combustion tested over the wide ranges of a mixture ratio and a chamber pressure. The thrust chamber designed for an open cycle engine with a turbopump was tested with a ablative combustion chamber instead of a regenerative chamber to first evaluate its performance and function. The test results revealed stable combustion characteristics. The hardware survived the harsh environment and showed very sound functional characteristics. The estimated combustion efficiency of the chamber turned out to be 95% and a specific impulse at sea level was estimated as 254sec, which are comparable to or above the predicted design values.

  • The development of a combustion chamber for a 30-$ton_f$ regeneratively-cooled space liquid rocket engine is described. Starting from the development of bi-propellant swirl coaxial injectors, essential technologies were verified through subscale combustion chambers and afterwards applied to the full-scale combustion chambers. A total of 5 full-scale combustion chambers have been utilized to verify ignition, combustion efficiency and stability, cooling, and duration requirements. A total of 46 combustion tests were performed among which 23 tests were parallely performed with stability rating tests using a pulse gun device. The test results have revealed that the 30-$ton_f$ regeneratively-cooled combustion chamber fully complies to the performance and combustion stability requirements and thus concluded that the development is successfully completed.

A Comparative Analysis for the Performance of 200 N-class Gaseous Methane-Liquid Oxygen Small Rocket Engine According to the Characteristic Length Variation (특성길이 변화에 따른 200 N급 기체메탄-액체산소 소형로켓엔진의 성능 비교 분석)

  • Ground hot-firing tests were conducted to analyze the combustion performance according to the characteristic lengths 1.37 m, 1.71 m, and 2.06 m of the combustion chamber in 200 N-class GCH4-LOx small rocket engine. Thrust, specific impulse, and characteristic velocity at the steady-state could be obtained as the key performance parameters of the rocket engine. The performance characteristics acquired through the test were compared and analyzed with the theoretical performance calculated from CEA analysis. Observation of the influence of characteristic length on the combustion performance indicates that an optimal characteristic length shall remain between 1.71 m and 2.06 m.

  • This paper is related to a design of high pressure sub-scale combustor with regenerative reeling. As a previous step for the evaluation of thermal heat flux, a similar combustor with cooling water was manufactured. Design conditions with high combustion efficiency and cooling performance were verified through the hot firing tests of the water-cooled high pressure combustor. Finally the regeneratively cooled high pressure combustor has been designed based on these data. After manufacturing it, its practical utility will be tested and verified through hot firing tests.

  • 본 논문에서는 액체로켓엔진에서 터보펌프의 160kW급 터빈을 구동하고, 액체산소와 케로신을 추진제로 사용하는 가스발생기의 설계점 연소성능시험 결과에 대해 논의하였다. 충돌형 F-O-F 인젝터, 물냉각 채널을 가진 연소실, torch ignitor, turbulence ring 그리고 측정 링을 갖는 가스발생기에 대해 기술하였고, 점화, 연소, 종료 등의 시험 cyclogram에 대해 언급하였다. 설계점에서의 연소시험 및 turbulence ring 장착여부, 연소실 길이 변화에 따른 연소시험의 결과들에 대해 기술하였다. 연소시험 결과 가스발생기는 설계점에서 안정된 작동성을 보여주었고, 연소압력 및 온도 등의 성능이 예측치에 근접하는 결과를 보여 주었다. Turbulence ring은 출구에서의 가스온도를 균일하게 분포시켜 효과적인 혼합 장치임을 보여 주었고, 4-6msec 정도에서의 잔류시간에서는 연소효율의 차이가 크지 않음을 알 수 있었다. 가스발생기 출구에서의 온도는 공급되는 추진제의 O/F ratio에 따라 매우 민감하게 반응함을 알 수 있었다.

An Experimental Study of the Gas Turbine Slinger Combustor (가스터빈 슬링거 연소기 실험연구)

  • An experimental study was carried out to investigate the combustion characteristics of the slinger combustor. A combustion test rig was manufactured and installed in KARI combustor test facility. From the ignition test results, we found that there were two major factors influencing the ignition limits; by increasing the rotational speed and the air mass flow rate, a better ignition performance was attained. From the combustion test results, we obtained 99.6% combustion efficiency, 15% pattern factor, and 3% profile factor. The results in this work indicate that the ignition and combustion characteristics of a slinger combustor are markedly different from those of a conventional annular combustor.
