Low Pressure Firing Tests of 75-tonf-Class Channel Cooling Thrust Chamber (75톤급 채널냉각 연소기 저압연소시험)

  • Firing tests have been carried out for a technology demonstration model of 75-tonf-class combustor which is to be used on the liquid rocket engine of a Korean space launch vehicle. Firing tests were done at 50% of the nominal flow rate because of incapability of the test facility and limit of the test bed strength. Through the low pressure firing tests of 75-tonf-class channel cooling thrust chamber, operability and stability at the ignition and combustion phases were confirmed. Additionally it was foreseen that the 75-tonf-class thrust chamber would satisfy the performance requirements.

  • Using the technology demonstration model of 75-tonf-class combustor which is expected to be used to the rocket engine of a korean space launch vehicle, 2 times of firing tests were carried out. Firing tests were done at 50% of the nominal flow rate because of incapability of the test facility and limit of the test bed strength.   • A liquid rocket engine experiences various static loads in flight, such as high pressures due to propellents, thrust and thermal loads due to cryogenic liquid oxygen and combustion gas with extreme vibration. During the engine development stage, structural analyses and investigation on the strain measured from ground firing tests are necessary for determining the structural reliability of the engine. In this study, the strain characteristics, obtained from the ground firing tests of a 75 tonf-class engine, were analyzed.

  • Effects of combustion chamber design on combustion stability characteristics of a full-scale gas generator were studied experimentally. Thirty seven double-swirl injectors with recess number of 1.5 were distributed in the injector head, which significantly influences combustion performance. The characteristics of combustion stability were inspected by the parametric variations such as changing length and diameter of the combustion chamber and installing a turbulence ring. The experimental result shows that as the effective length of the combustion chamber decreased, an instability frequency took place in a high-frequency region, and the amplitude of the dynamic pressure generally diminished and could be reduced to the unharmful level. However, the dynamic pressure fluctuation in the region of longitudinal resonant frequency could not be suppressed perfectly.

  • It was carried out hot-firing test with a regenerative-cooled sub-scale combustor which was applied regenerative-cooling, film cooling and thermal barrier coating. Test results showed that cooling methods used in the combustor play an full role in the operation of the combustor under the design condition but it is occurred high frequency combustion instability due to unsteady flow of fuel by structural support ring inserted in fuel manifold. The flow pattern of fuel was improved by excluding the ring and it will be carried out additional hot-firing test to verify the combustion stability of modified combustor.

  • The structural analysis and water pressure test of regenerative liquid rocket thrust chamber cooling channel specimens are performed at room temperature. material properties of copper alloy are obtained by uniaxial tension test at room temperature and used of elastic-plastic structural analysis. The plate type of cooling channel specimen are manufactured and performed water pressure test in order to confirm the analysis results. The differences between results of elastic-plastic analysis and that of water pressure test of cooling channel specimen are small and find that manufacturing process affect the structural stability of cooling channel very much because cooling channel thickness is small

  • The development process of a gas generator for a 30-tonf pump-fed space liquid rocket engine is described. Starting from the development of an injector, followed by subscale and full-scale test specimens, the development of LOx/kerosene fuel-rich gas generator has been concluded successfully. Various analytical methods have been utilized in the course of design and the performance requirements have been verified experimentally through ignition tests, combustion performance and stability assessment tests and duration tests. The gas generator has proven its workability and stability within a defined operation window of varying chamber pressure and mixture ratio and demonstrated compliance to the performance and life time requirements.

  • This study was aimed to assess combustion stability for coaxial swirl injector and FOOF impinging injector which would be candidates in liquid rocket engine combustors. Simulating combustion tests under atmospheric condition have been conducted by gaseous oxygen and the mixture of methane and propane, using two actual injectors. By analyzing the measured dynamic pressure signals, we have evaluated the combustion stability margin of both injectors by drawing a stability map.

  • In the paper, the dynamic characteristics obtained from hot-firing tests of 1/2.5-scale thrust chamber for 75 tonf-class liquid rocket engine were described. To investigate the dynamic characteristics by engine start transient period and chamber pressure variation, hot-firing tests were performed in the chamber pressures of 30 bar and 60 bar. According to these variations, combustion stability in the combustion chamber was examined.

  • In this paper, development and acceptance test results of 75-tonf class liquid rocket engine gas generators are described. Up to now, more than 330 times and cumulative time of 7,000 seconds gas generator autonomous tests have been carried out with 44 gas generator models. Through the tests it was verified that 75 tonf gas generator shows very reliable and reproducible characteristics in terms of chamber pressure, combustion efficiency, pressure loss, combustion stability, burnt gas temperature, and etc. 5 gas generators which are the last series of 75 tonf gas generator for the Korea Space Launch Vehicle II, will be manufactured until end of 2019 and their acceptance tests will be executed at the first half of 2020.
