Wear Properties of Hybrid Metal Matrix Composites (하이브리드 금속복합재료의 마모특성)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the wear properties of Saffil/Al, Saffil/A12O3/Al and Saffil/SiC/Al hybrid metal matrix composites fabricated by squeeze casting method. Wear tests were done on a pin-on-disk friction and wear tester under both dry and lubricated conditions. The wear properties of the three composites were evaluated in many respects. The effects of Saffil fibers, $\textrm{Al}_2\textrm{O}_3$ particles and SiC particles on the wear behavior of the composites were investigated. Wear mechanisms were analyzed by observing the worn surfaces of the composites. The variation of coefficient of friction(COF) during the wear process was recorded by using a computer. Under dry sliding condition, Saffil/SiC/Al showed the best wear resistance under high temperature and high load, while the wear resistances of Saffil/Al and Saffi1/$\textrm{Al}_2\textrm{O}_3$/Al were very similar. Under dry sliding condition, the dominant wear mechanism was abrasive wear under mild load and room temperature, and the dominant wear mechanism changed to adhesive wear as load or temperature increased. Molten wear occurred at high temperature. Compared with the dry sliding condition, all three composites showed excellent wear resistance when lubricated by liquid paraffin. Under lubricated condition, Saffil/Al showed the best wear resistance among them, and its COF value was the smallest. The dominant wear mechanism of the composites under lubricated condition was microploughing, but microcracking also occurred to them to different extents.

  • Generally the side plate materials of FRP ship are composed of glass fiber and unsaturated polyester resin composites(GFRP composites). In this study, the effect of applied load and sliding speed on friction and wear characteristics of these materials were investigated at ambient temperature by pin-on-disc friction test. The cumulative wear volume, friction coefficient and wear rate of these materials for SiC abrasive paper were determined experimentally. The cumulative wear volume showed a tendency to increase nonlinearly with increase of sliding distance and was dependent on applied load and sliding speed for these composites. The friction coefficient of GFRP composites was increased as applied load increased at same sliding speed in wear test. It was verified by SEM photograph of worn surface that major failure mechanisms were microfracture, deformation of resin, cutting and cracking.

Tool Locus Analysis of Ultra-precision Inclined Grinding (초정밀 경사축 연삭가공에서의 공구 궤적 해석)

  • This paper presents the geometrical analysis of an inclined ultra-precision grinding technology using simulations about grinding point locus for micro lens manufacturing. Simulation results show the relationship between radius ratios ($R_1/R_2$) and wheel center locus. Furthermore, the critical grinding wheel radius ($R_1$) can be calculated from work-piece radius ($R_2$) and inclined angle ($\theta=-45^{\circ}$). These achievements could be applied to calculate CNC data in ultra-precision grinding and give insight for wheel wear and compensation grinding.

Wear Characteristics of Cylinder-Liner Materials for Diesel Engine at Elevated Temperature (디젤엔진용 실린더 라이너 소재의 고온 마모특성)

  • In a diesel engine, the wear of the cylinder liner occurs because of the continuous reciprocating motion of the piston ring. This wear reduces the performance of the diesel engine and shortens its service life. This study evaluated the wear characteristics of GT metal and a conventional metal used for cylinder liners using a ship's diesel engine. Wear tests were performed at temperatures of $25^{\circ}C$, $175^{\circ}C$, and $325^{\circ}C$, and under loads of 10 N, 30 N, and 50 N. The amount of wear, specific wear rate, and friction coefficient were evaluated for each condition. To analyze the wear mechanism, observations were made on an SEM. In the case of both metals, abrasive and adhesion wear occurred on the wear surfaces at room temperature, and corrosion wear was observed at high temperatures. The amount of wear and the specific wear rate of the GT metal were lower than those of the conventional metal at all temperatures, and hence it can be concluded that the wear characteristics of the GT metal are much better.

  • 연료 분사펌프는 600bar 이상의 고압 연료를 분사밸브를 통하여 디젤기관의 연소실에 연속적으로 공급하는 장치이며, PLUNGER&BARREL 은 분사펌프의 핵심 부품으로 작동하고 고온 고압의 환경에서 $4{\mu}m$ 미만의 초정밀 간극을 유지해야 한다. 이러한 정밀한 가공 상태를 유지하기 위해선 내마모성 및 내열성에 적합한 재료와 열처리가 필수 요소이다. 현재 주로 사용되고 있는 방식은 DIAMOND STONE 에 의한 HORNIG 가공을 주로 사용하기 있다. 하지만, 연삭 가공과는 달리 별도의 치수 보정 장치가 없는 관계로, STONE 마모와 그에 따르는 마모량 공차에 의한 정밀 치수 확보의 어려움으로 인해, 고비용 저효율의 약점을 가지고 있다. 그러므로 기존의 HORNING STONE 방식을 대체한 PIN 방식의 HORNING MACHINE 개발을 목표로 한다.

  • Electrical discharge machining (EDM) is one of the most extensively used non-conventional material removal process. The recent trend in reducing the size of product has given micro EDM a significant amount of research attention. Micro EDM is capable of machining not only micro holes and micro shafts as small as a few micrometers in diameter but also complex three dimensional micro cavities. But, longitudinal tool wear by electrical discharge is indispensable and this affects the machining accuracy in micro EDM process. Therefore, newly developed tool wear compensation strategy called round trip method is suggested and verified by experiment. In this method, machining depth of cut, overlap effect and critical travel length are also considered.

  • The surface roughness is one of the important parameters to evaluate the quality of products. Its level must be limited to a certain range in the precision components. This paper deals with grinding characteristics of workpieces by the wear amount of wheels in the surface grinding process. The surface roughness was measured according to the feedrate and the depth of cut with respect to the various workpieces. In addition, the wear amount of wheels according to the number of grinding pieces was obtained.

초정밀가공 기술의 현황과 전망

  • 마이크로 일렉트로닉스(Microelectronics)를 중심으로 하는 산업혁명이 진행되고 있는 시점에서 전자, 광학 또는 신소재 부품에 대한 형상과 치수 또는 표면거칠기에 대한 정확도와 정밀도가 엄격하게 요구되고 있다. 예를 들어 경취 재료인 반도체의 웨이화( w-afer), 수정진동자 자기헷트, 비구면렌즈 또는 연질 금속의 레이저빔(Laser Beam) 프린터 용 포리곤 밀러(Polygon Mirror), 자기디스크, 복사기용 드럼(drum), 레저기기용 반사밀러 등 가공정밀도를 향상시키기 위해서는 과거의 가공기술을 대치할 수 있는 새로운 초정밀가공 기술의 도입이 활발하게 진행되고 있다. 경취성 재료의 초정밀가공은 지금까지는 랩핑(lappi- ng), 폴리싱(polishing)의 가공기술이 주체였으나, 최근의 엄격한 부품정밀도에 대응하기 위하여 전가공을 초정밀 연삭가공으로 평면도,표면거칠기, 가공변질층을 향상시키고 다듬질 가공은 폴리싱으로 하여 표면거칠기를 향상시켜야 하는 가공기술이 보급되고 있다. 일반연질 금속의 다듬질가공은 유리지립을 이용하는 랩핑이나 폴리싱으로 다듬질 가공을 진행하고 있었 으나 형상정도와 표면정밀도를 동시에 얻는다는 것이 어렵고 또 가공시간이 너무 길어서 매우 고가인 것이 되고 말았다. 그러나 유리에서 연질금속으로 재료를 전환시키고 저가격화, 양산 화의 요구, 정밀도 향상과 부품의 안정화 등등 여러 이유로서 다아아몬드(Diamond) 공구로 mirror surface 를 만드는 초정밀 경면연삭 가공기술(precision turning with diamond)의 발달 로 이제는 완전히 새로운 가공기술로 대치되고 말았다. 다이아몬드에 의한 초정밀절삭은 공구 끝이 매우 예리하고 마모가 매우 적은 단결정 다이아몬드를 이용하고 절삭가공 기계는 운동정도 를 피가공물에 정확히 전사 시키는 방법이며 따라서 가공기계는 고도의 운동정밀도가 요구되며 그외에 강성, 진동, 열변이, 제어면에서 엄격한 검도가 있어야 한다.

Cutting Performance Evaluation of Non-Ground Cross-hole Type Milling Insert (Cross-hole Type 밀링용 비 연삭 인서트의 가공성능평가)

  • The existent cutting insert have occupied most product of grinding style, because it has a problem of accuracy and manufacturing process. The product has a concept but development is difficult, because grinding and manufacturing by press are impossible. But by development and stabilization of a technology, preference of non-ground insert increases gradually. And then insert that grinding is impossible is developed availably as non-ground product by using developed equipment and software. In this paper reports some experimental results on the machining performance of non-ground Cutting inserts. Three kinds of Cutting inserts were manufactured without using grinding process. Machining experiments were carried out to compare the machining performance of non-ground inserts with that of ground ones. The experimental results indicate that the cutting forces and tool wear and surface roughnesses of machined surface of both ground and non-ground inserts are comparable.

  • Recently, international attention has been focused on the development of non-traditional energy resources such as shale gas and oil sands, due to the steep increase in the demand for natural resources. The materials incorporated in an oil gas plant module experience extreme environments, and are prone to various problem such as fracture, corrosion and abrasion due to low-temperature brittleness. In order to improve the plant life, it is necessary to perform characteristics study and performance evaluation of the materials. In particular, this paper explains the main set of materials which are most frequently used in oil sands plant project. In order to investigate wear characteristics, the authors carried out abrasive wear tests of TP 316, stainless steel and SS 400, structural rolled steel. For the analysis of the abrasive wear resistance of an oil sands plant, the authors carried out the test according to ASTM G 105 "Standard Test Method for Conducting Wet Sand/Rubber Wheel Abrasion Test" standard guidelines. The authors have derived the results from the data associated with the loss of mass with respect to wear rate. During the test, for a given wear length for 10,000 revolutions, the rotational speed and applied force of the rubber wheel were varied.
