  • In the MCFC power generation system, the combustor supplies a high temperature mixture of gases to the cathode and heat to the reformer by using the off-gas from the anode; the off-gas includes high concentrations of $H_2O$ and $CO_2$. Since a combustor needs to be operated in a very lean condition and avoid local heating, a catalytic combustor is usually adopted. Catalytic combustion is also generally accepted as one of the environmentally preferred alternatives for generation of heat and power from fossil fuels because of its complete combustion and low emissions of pollutants such as CO, UHC, and $NO_x$. In this study, experiments were conducted on catalytic combustion behavior in the presence of Pd-based catalysts for the BOP (Balance Of Plant) of 5 kW MCFC (Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell) power generation systems. Extensive investigations were carried out on the catalyst performance with the gaseous $CH_4$ fuel by changing such various parameters as $H_2$ addition, inlet temperature, excess air ratio, space velocity, catalyst type, and start-up schedule of the pilot system adopted in the BOP.

  • Numerical investigation was performed to study on the soot formation characteristics in the WSR according to the CO addition. Ethylene and pure air were used as a fuel and an oxidizer, respectively, and three different equivalence ratios (2.0, 2.5, 3.0) were used in the calculation. The resulted CO mole fraction of 10 % CO addition showed the maximum value in spite of the least CO supply. This means that the conversion of CO to soot and other carbon compounds is weakened under incipient soot formation. The soot volume fraction was decreased with increasing the CO addition because the important species for soot formation such as pyrene and acetylene, were decreased with the addition of CO. When the equivalence ratio was 2.5, the soot volume fraction shows the highest value, which results from the contribution of fuel rich condition and reacting temperature. Furthermore, surface growth rate and species concentrations justified the HACA mechanism for soot formation.

  • The cooling of a injector effects on the vapor pressure of cryogenic oxidizer spray, and it decides the phase transition point at the ignition process, when the combustion chamber pressure increases drastically. The phase transition of oxidizer spray affects the ignition characteristics, and several ignition tests with the LOx/$GCH_4$ uni-element coaxial swirl injector was performed in the different initial temperatures of oxidizer injector, in order to investigate the effect of injector cooling on the ignition transient characteristics. At the transition point of oxidizer phase, where the combustion chamber pressure increased over the LOx vapor pressure, the temporary quenching phenomenon of the flame occurred. The lower temperature of chilled down injector and tubing tends to move up the phase transition earlier.

  • Liquefied Petroleum Gas(LPG) has attracted attention as a alternative fuel. The lean-burn LPG direct injection engine is a promising technology because it has an advantage of lower harmful emissions. This study aims to investigate the effect of combustion strategy and excess air ratio on combustion and emission characteristics in lean-burn LPG direct injection engine. Fuel consumption and combustion stability were measured with change of the ignition timing and injection timing at various air/fuel ratio conditions. The lean combustion characteristics were evaluated as a function of the excess air ratio with the single injection and multiple injection strategy. Furthermore, the feasibility of lean operation with stratified mixture was assessed when comparing the combustion and emission characteristics with premixed lean combustion.

  • Compression ratio is an important factor affecting engine performance and emission characteristics since thermal efficiency of spark ignition engine can be theoretically improved by increasing compression ratio. In order to evaluate the effect of compression ratio change in HCNG engine, natural gas engine was employed using HCNG30 (CNG 70 vol%, hydrogen 30 vol%). Combustion and emission characteristics of CNG and HCNG fuel was analyzed with respect to the change of compression ratio at each operating condition. The results showed that thermal efficiency improved and $CH_4$, $CO_2$ emission decreased with the increase in compression ratio while $NO_x$ emissions were decreased at a certain excess air ratio condition. Higher thermal efficiency and further reduction of exhaust emissions can be achieved by the increase of compression ratio and the retard of spark timing.

  • Engine makers are lately interested in the gas engine development as the alternative for diesel engine in order to cope the rise of oil price and the environmental regulation. So, STX has developed the 1.6MW gas engine which was converted from 22HLX diesel engine. The gas engine developed with precombustion chamber, which has good performance of 21bar BMEP at engine speed 1000rpm and low $NO_X$ emission of 50ppm at 15% oxygen composition, has been developed recently. Especially, it has a good thermal efficiency of 45% and a reduction efficiency of green house gas($CO_2$) emission of 25% than a conventional diesel engine.

  • Film cooling technique has been applied to effectively reduce thermal load on liquid rocket combustion chambers by direct injection of a portion of propellant, which flows through the regeneratively cooling channels, into the chamber wall. This study developed a comprehensive model to quantitatively predict the effects of kerosene film cooling on propulsive performance and wall cooling at supercritical pressure conditions, and assessed the predictive capability against hot-firing tests of an actual combustor. The present model is expected to be utilized as a design and analysis tool to meet the conflicting requirements in terms of performance, cooling, pressure loss and weight.

  • Trends in the automotive market require the application of new engine technologies, which allows for the use of different types of fuel. Since ethanol is a renewable source of energy and has lower $CO_2$ emissions than gasoline, ethanol produced from biomass is expected to be used more frequently as an alternative fuel. It is recognized that for spark ignition (SI) engines, ethanol has the advantages of high octane number and high combustion speed. Due to the disadvantages of ethanol, it may cause extra wear and corrosion of electric fuel pumps. On-board hydrogen production out of ethanol is an alternative plan. This paper investigates the influence of ethanol fuel on SI engine performance, thermal efficiency and emissions. The combustion characteristics with hydrogen-enriched gaseous fuel from ethanol are also examined. As a result, thermal efficiency increase compared to gasoline. Also, reductions in $CO_2$, NOx, and THC combustion products for ethanol vs. gasoline are described.

  • The Measurement of concentration patterns for $C_2$, CH and OH radicals in the premixed propane-air flame could be managed through an image processing technique. This technique was applied to the three kinds of flames on a bunsen burner-mixtures of fuel to be lean, optimum and excessive respectively. The image processing system was complished by treating single wavelength flame images around the eac radical luminescence band, which was obtained by using a set of narrow band pass filters, an image intensifier, CCD and PC. It was possible to observe and predict the reaction zone and the concentration distribution of the radicals, Spatial distribution of each radicals in the raaction zone gave us enough informations to analyze the reaction mechanisms in $C_mH_n$ combustion process. According to this informations, the image of $C_2$ radical exists at front zone, following the images of CH and OH radicals at downstream.
