  • The purposes of this study were 1) to investigate eating behaviors and patterns in breast cancer patients using a newly developed food frequency questionnaire and 2) to examine perception and use of nutritional information about breast cancer treatment among cancer patients treated with radiation therapy. Sixty breast cancer patients (case group) undergoing radiation therapy in Ajou University Hospital, Suwon, South Korea and 79 healthy women (control group) participated in this study. Mean age of subjects in the control group was $46.00{\pm}7.88$ years and BMI was $23.12{\pm}2.85kg/m^2$, and that of the case group was $50.06{\pm}11.64$ years and $22.32{\pm}3.24kg/m^2$. The results of eating behaviors showed several significant differences between control and case groups. Breast cancer patients ate meals on a more regular basis, on time, and more frequently compared to control subjects. In addition, they preferred more salty or spicy and bland food compared to healthy women. According to answers from the food frequency questionnaire, breast cancer patients consumed significantly lower amounts of boiled white rice, meats and processed food, fish and shellfish, coffee, milk, and cheese, whereas they consumed a significantly large amount of boiled multigrain rice, vegetable, seaweeds, soybean and processed food, and yoghurt compared to healthy women. This study also observed the way in which cancer patients and healthy control subjects obtain information about breast cancer treatment and its reliabilities. Results showed that healthy women did not hesitate to obtain information from mass media, while breast cancer patients would obtain nutritional information from specialists rather than mass media. Results of this survey confirmed that breast cancer patients avoided intake of red meat protein, even though they already recognized the importance of dietary protein intake for recuperation and treatment of the disease. These results could be used for future diet and nutrition guidelines for breast cancer patients.

  • This research identified landscape characteristics of Chilitan(칠리탄) area, which had been managed by Son Giyang(1559~1617, p. Ohhan), in order to understand the political viewpoint and ideal landscapes, sought after by Confucian scholars in the 16~17th century. As the research method for the interpretation of each scene's spatial strucutres and meanings, paintings and poems in Chiltanjungsipyukgyeongdo(the Paintings of the 16 Scenes of Chiltanjung Area) were analyzed, which were followed by the on-site survey. Son lived hermit life with the nature after he decided to retire into the country for the chaotic political environment in the 4th year of Gwanghaegun's reign. Admiring Eum Jareung(B.C. 39-41, p. Eumgwang)'s hermit life, he named a headstream to Chilitan, erected pavilion and made place for angling by the stream, as Eum did in the hermitage. However he worried the king and royal politics in spite of his hermit life, which showed his political viewpoint of Confucianism. In addition, every column of buildings in the garden was named in order to imply both thoughts of Neo-Confucianism and Idleness Naturalism, which highlight a moral training and being comfortable amid poverty and taking pleasure in and honest life style. The present landscape of wonlim could be back to 1936, where Unganru, Byeokripjae and Chiltanjung are surrounding Eupcheondang. Chines character, such as Jimamsuseok, Giam, Ohhansonsunseongjanggujiso and Jogi, are inscribed on the rocks in the landscape garden, from which placeness could be inferred. According to the record of the construction, pine, fir, paulownia, ginkgo, peach trees, bamboo and lotus were planted, and ginkgo, bamboo, crape myrtle, pine and chestnut tress are still living in the garden, which mean plants had been planted in the light of their practical values as well as symbolic meanings. The method for describing 16 scenes of Chiltanjung could be characterized to the structure of 「Place+Scene(a particural activity, event, or action), and these placeness could be analyzed by categorizing the scene to near, middle and far views. Each scene symbolically presents a hermit, noble man, Taoist ideology, homeland, or peacetime, which were adpoted to depict landscapes of Chiltanjung area as the Confucian utopia.

  • This study aims at examining the discussions of Chilgeojiak, meaning seven vices that can be valid causes of divorce, and the discourse on a married couple shown in the deposal of Empress Kwak in Okhwangibong. The study first analyzes the relationship between the incidents of expelling wives from homes in the Joseon Dynasty Era and the seven vices. The divorce of Yi Mi and Shin Taeyeong and the deposal of Queen Yun by King Seongjong show that the standards of judgement in most of the seven vices are unclear or controversial. In Okhwangibong, the arguments about Chilgeojiak are examined through the form of a novel with the expulsion of Empress Kwak. Empress Kwak was deposed by her husband, Emperor Kwangmu, due to jealousy and evil deeds. However, she was devoted to her parents-in-law, bore sons, and above all, she was the emperor's first wife and had gone through hard times and supported her husband. Considering these circumstances, her deposal is not quite agreeable. Readers have the same question, and this has become a cause of the creation of a series. The reasons for Empress Kwak's jealousy lie in Okhwan-a jade ring, the existence of Empress Eum, and the partial love of Emperor Kwangmu. That is, it is not Empress Kwak's fault. Additionally, unrealistic elements involved in Empress Kwak's evil deeds and the story structure focused on her work as factors that make readers support Empress Kwak. Therefore, Okhwangibong displays the realities regarding the discourse of husbands and wives of the era rather than the love in Okhwan, the jade ring, between Emperor Kwangmu and Empress Eum. Such understanding continues to exist in the following series and is a valid problem in the present time.

  • This study is conducted to understand the real shape of confusion surrounding mathematical terminologies, 'ratio' and 'rate' in both the US and Korea and to get some implications for Korean education. For this, various materials including textbooks and materials for kids and teachers, dictionaries, educational internet web sites, the past Korean elementary mathematics curriculums and etc are reviewed with respect to the terminologies related to 'ratio' and 'rate'. As a result, the findings are as follows. Firstly, the US and Korea have different views with ratio and rate. Secondly, Korean terminologies related to ratio and rate are not enough to treat the essentials of the concept of ratio and rate.

  • This article aims to inquire into the decision making system and the sources of the original documents made by means of it in Imperial Japan, the colonial Chosun, GHQ, and the occupied Japan in terms of the post-war treatments of compensation on the Japanese colonial rules. It deals with them from 1910 to 1952 in the perspective of history and archivistics. This article attempts to establish the foundation on which the perception of the documents made in the Imperial Japan, its colony, and the occupied territory would be widened by placing the colonial rules and the compensation on them into a continuous line. The records of Japan's forced occupation of Korea during 1910-1945, and the original records documenting the decision making process of post-war compensation under GHQ, 1945-1952, have been dispersed in Korea, Japan and the United States. This dispersed preservation was mainly due to the complicated decision-making process among Governor-General of Chosun, the Japanese Imperial government, and the GHQ. It was the top-down styled, dual decision making system, in which the critical policies, personnel, and budget had been decided in Imperial homeland, while their implementations were made in the colonies. As a result, the records documenting the whole process of domination have been preserved dispersedly in Japan and its colonies. In particular, the accounts of not yet paid Korean workers that was forced to mobilize in Japan's colonial periods, which is emerging as the diplomatic conflict between Korea and Japan, had been dealt in the decrees of the Japanese government and policy-making of GHQ. It has already been changed to the problem as 'economic cooperation' from the 'debt'. Also, the critical records for post-war compensation were preserved dispersedly in the United States and Japan under the top-down decision making process of GHQ-Japan. Therefore, the dispersed records of 1910-1952 about the colonial rules by the Imperial Japan and the post-war compensation on them must be re-investigated for the adequate documentation in the context of time and space.

The Effect of Disgust on Legal Judgment: Disgust Induced by the Crime Scene vs. Sexual Minority Stereotypes (혐오 정서가 법적 판단에 미치는 영향: 범죄현장으로부터 유발된 혐오와 성 소수자 고정관념에서 비롯된 혐오)

  • This study compared the nature of disgust caused by the crime scene with that by the stereotype of the sexual-minority defendant, and compared the effect of each type of disgust on evidence evaluation and legal judgment. A total of 600 participants (300 men, average age of 44.40) were randomly assigned to sources of disgust (crime scene, sexual minorities defendant, control condition), the existence of additional evidence of innocence (o/x), and the existence of judicial directives (o/x). As a result of the study, disgust under the condition of a cruel crime scene with strong physical disgust was significantly higher than that of the sexual minority defendant, interpreted the evidence in a more guilty direction, and was more prone to_evaluate that the defendant was guilty. It is noteworthy that evidence evaluation was a significant moderating variable between disgust and probability of guilt under conditions where the source of disgust was a sexual minority, but not under control conditions and crime scene condition. It means that the effect of disgust on legal judgment may not be direct when the defendant is a sexual minority. In addition, the existence of the judicial instruction had a significant inverse effect on the sentence. And simple effect analysis found that presenting judicial instruction lowered probability of guilt only under the control condition. This makes it reasonable to infer that disgust derived from the characteristics of the crime scene and the defendant can be recognized as integral emotions that are difficult to correct with instructions. Finally, pity for the defendant was significantly higher under the conditions of sexual minority which shows that an emotional response of sympathy may occur in addition to disgust for sexual minorities. After examining the nature of disgust (physical & moral), legal judgment according to the source and degree of disgust was reviewed. In addition, the meaning of disgust and sympathy for the sexual minority defendant was discussed.

  • T. Nakai, who wrote Flora of Koreana vol. II in 1911, cited V. L. Komarov's collections and listed more than 120 specimens with ca. 65 localities. All collection sites cited were described in the Romanized characters based on the Russian pronunciation. Therefore, it is very difficult to pinpoint those sites using the current or old version of Korean map. From this study, many names were reviewed based on other studies (both the Russian version and the Japanese translated version) and records (e.g. specimen label) and presented based on the current provinces with local names, the Chinese character, the GPS data and the first page of citation.

  • Statistical matching techniques whose aim is to achieve a complete data file from different sources. Since the statistical matching method proposed by Rubin (1986) assumes the multivariate normality for data, using this method to data which violates the assumption would involve some problems. This research proposed the statistical matching method using robust regression as an alternative to the linear regression. Furthermore, we carried out a simulation study to compare the performance of the robust regression model and the linear regression model for the statistical matching.

  • This paper aims to suggest a facet-based ontology model that can help sort and access records of dispersed families to address these problems. The facet systematically defines the categories of target concepts, which can create diverse and multiple access points. Using the top-down and bottom-up approaches, the facets, which consist of five upper classes and 18 lower classes, were derived for the records of dispersed families. The proposed ontology model was evaluated by real users. The results show that, overall, the ontology is complete and relevant in terms of access points, availability of context information of the records, and description elements for search and use of the records on dispersed families.
