  • This paper reviews literature on urban connectivity, and reconsiders the concept of polycentric urban region and its analysis methods, and then, applying them, explores the inter-city flight connectivity and polycentricity in the Yeongnam Region. As results of analysis, it has been identified that the entropy index shows a relatively dispersing pattern of the urban network of the region, and that the dominance index reveals a more polycentric (that is, less hierarchic) character of the region than that of the Capital Region, while some differences are found among individual cities in the symmetry of connectivity and the dominance and/or dependence index. Even though flows of products in textile, basic metals, and automobile industries in sub-divisions of manufacture appear a pattern of concentring into the first central city, the urban network of the Yeongnam Region in general can be characterized as a polycentrism, and policy for polycentric regional development would be suggested.

  • Some previous researches suggested a transit trip destination inference method by constructing trip chains with incomplete(missing destination) smart card dataset obtained on the entry fare control systems. To explore the feasibility of the transit trip destination inference method, the transit trip chains are constructed from the pre-paid smart card tagging data collected in Busan on October 2014 weekdays by tracing the card IDs, tagging times(boarding, alighting, transfer), and the trip linking distances between two consecutive transit trips in a daily sequences. Assuming that most trips in the transit trip chains are linked successively, the individual transit trip destination zones are inferred as the consecutive linking trip's origin zones. Applying the model to the complete trips with observed OD reveals that about 82% of the inferred trip destinations are the same as those of the observed trip destinations and the inference error defined as the difference in distance between the inferred and observed alighting stops is minimized when the trip linking distance is less than or equal to 0.5km. When applying the model to the incomplete trips with missing destinations, the overall destination missing rate decreases from 71.40% to 21.74% and approximately 77% of the destination missing trips are the single transit trips for which the destinations can not be inferable. In addition, the model remarkably reduces the destination missing rate of the multiple incomplete transit trips from 69.56% to 6.27%. Spearman's rank correlation and Chi-squared goodness-of-fit tests showed that the ranks for transit trips of each zone are not significantly affected by the inferred trips, but the transit trip distributions only using small complete trips are significantly different from those using complete and inferred trips. Therefore, it is concluded that the model should be applicable to derive a realistic transit trip patterns in cities with the incomplete smart card data.

  • The KTX station is one of special generators that produce a lot of trips caused by special land use such as university, airport, and super shopping mall. Special generators need special attention in developing travel demand models since the standard trip generation and distribution model in the conventional four-step approach do not provide reliable estimates of their travel patterns. New modeling approach, activity-based model, considering travel behavior of person, seem to be more appropriate for those special generators. Thus, this study introduces a spatial-temporal activity-based approach and how activity-based approach can be applied to estimation of travel demand at KTX stations.

  • Travel demand estimation of E-Scooter is the start point of solving the regional demand-supply imbalance problem and plays pivotal role in a linked transportation system such as Mobility-as-a-Service (a.k.a. MaaS). Most focuses on developing trip generation model of shared E-Scooter but it is no study on selection of an appropriate zone scale when it comes to estimating travel demand of E-Scooter. This paper aimed for selecting an optimal TAZ scale for developing trip distribution model for shared E-Scooter. The TAZ scale candidates were selected in 250m, 500m, 750m, 1,000m square grid. The shared E-Scooter usage historical data were utilized for calculating trip distance and time, and then applying to developing gravity model. Mean Squared Error (MSE) is applied for the verification step to select the best suitable gravity model by TAZ scale. As a result, 250m of TAZ scale is the best for describing practical trip distribution of shared E-Scooter among the candidates.

  • Presently, most of rail stations are situated on the surface of dowl1town and thus result in heavy traffic congestion and inefficient use of land. This paper analyzes the impact of alternative locations of station On urban traffic patterns by simulating transportation systems, of Busan city. Since location of station has long-term effects on land use and transportation, 20 years forecast of land use change, trip generation, trip distribution, modal split and network assignment was performed for each alternative, and aggregate Impacts On passenger-km and passenger-hour were computed. The result indicated that Bujeon is the most desirable location of station in terms of traffic movement, compared to the alternative locations of Sasang and existing station. Relocation of rail station, however, should be decided with broader analysis including other aspects, such as urban development, environment, construction and operating costs, etc.

  • Bikes have recently emerged as an alternative to carbon neutrality. To understand the demand for public bikes, we endeavored to estimate travel frequency of public bike by considering the intermediate stops. Using the GPS trajectory data of 'Ttareungyi', a public bike service in Seoul, we identified a stay point and estimated travel frequency reflecting population, land use, and physical characteristics. Application of map matching and a stay point detection algorithm revealed that stay point appeared in about 12.1% of the total trips. Compared to a trip without stay point, the trip with stay point has a longer average travel distance and travel time and a higher occurrence rate during off-peak hours. According to visualization analysis, the stay points are mainly found in parks, leisure facilities, and business facilities. To consider the stay point, the unit of analysis was set as a hexagonal grid rather than the existing rental station base. Travel frequency considering the stay point were analyzed using the Zero-Inflated Negative Binomial (ZINB) model. Results of our analysis revealed that the travel frequency were higher in bike infrastructure where the safety of bike users was secured, such as 'Bikepath' and 'Bike and pedestrian path'. Also, public bikes play a role as first & last mile means of access to public transportation. The measure of travel frequency was also observed to increase in life and employment centers. Considering the results of this analysis, securing safety facilities and space for users should be given priority when planning any additional expansion of bike infrastructure. Moreover, there is a necessity to establish a plan to supply bike infrastructure facilities linked to public transportation, especially the subway.

  • It is necessary to improve transfer impedance of express bus terminal users in order to increase the usage of public transportation. This study constructed a model for calculating transfer impedance based on bodily sensational transfer time in express bus terminal and calculated transfer impedance on major express bus terminals in Korea. The study results show that the addition of 100 meter exterior walking distance increases 3 minute travel time, 100 meter interior walking distance increases 5 minute travel time, 100 stairways increase 13 minute travel time, and escalators decreases 3 minute travel time. The calculated transfer impedance based on bodily sensational transfer time in this study can be utilized as objective criteria to compare transfer conditions of different bus terminals and to prioritize them for facility improvement. The calculated transfer impedance also can be used as facility guidelines for designing a new transit center.

  • A variety of research efforts, using advanced wireless communication technologies, have been made to develop more reliable traffic information system. This study presents a novel decentralized traffic information system based on vehicle infrastructure integration (VII). A major objective of this study was also to devise a methodology for determining appropriate spacing of roadside equipment (RSE) to fully exploit the benefits of the proposed VII-based traffic information system. Evaluation of travel time estimation accuracy was conducted with various RSE spacings and the market penetration rates of equipped vehicle. A microscopic traffic simulator, VISSIM, was used to obtain individual vehicle travel information for the evaluation. In addition, the ANOVA tests were conducted to draw statistically significant results of simulation analyses in determining the RSE spacing. It is expected that the proposed methodology will be a valuable precursor to implementing capability-enhanced next generation traffic information systems under the forthcoming ubiquitous transportation environment.
