A Study of the Elderly Female Gamblers' Life History: On the Aspect of Existential Self-regulation ('실존적 자기조절(existential self-regulation)' 측면에서 본 여성노인도박자의 삶에 대한 연구)

  • This study is on mid-seventies female gamblers who went through Korean modern history. The purpose is to analyze interviews on their life of understanding what their true self is, and to redefine gambling. The concept of 'existential self-regulation' was proposed and the materials were acquired through narrative interviews. The materials were then investigated according to Mandelbaum's framework for analysis of which suggests dimension, turning, and adaptation. The self-narrative revealed that the process of being addicted to gambling is as in the following: compensating her emotional deficiency via money and child's education, getting rid of the emotional deficiency via gambling, becoming free from emotional deficiency. The meaning of gambling has shifted to a comfort to existential vacuum, a source of anxiety ruining life, pastime for boring everyday life. Life events that control the impulse to gamble through 'existential self-knowledge' occurred in the second and the third stage. Based on the results, the study suggests mid-seventies female gamblers to write her autobiography, and proposed the necessity of self-examining programs.

A Study on the Gambling and Family Relationships of Gamblers in Choongchung Area (충청 지역의 도박중독 실태와 가족관계에 대한 연구)

  • Gambling is prevailing in our society and the family problems of gamblers are also serious. In order to reduce the problems of gamblers and their families, the basic research on gambling would be the first step. In light of this, this study is a survey which has two objectives: to grasp the overall conditions of gambling and the proportion of pathological gamblers; to find the differences between the pathological gamblers' group and the general group in terms of various aspects of family relations in Choongchung area. The findings of this study is as follows, The respondents tend to gamble most with korean playing cards, either in winter or regardless of seasons. They tend to gamble most with family members, relatives, or friends. About 20% of them gamble more often than once a month, and 60% started gambling in their twenties or thirties. The proportion of pathological gamblers was found to be 11.6% of the sample of this study, with men and rural area residents to be significantly more than women and urban area residents. In the various aspects of family lives, such as marital satisfaction, family relations, family violence, family history of addiction, how to spend leisure time with family, it was found that the pathological gamblers' group has significantly more problems than the general group. On the basis of the above findings, the suggestions were made as follows. Firstly, the counter plan to gambling is necessary in the rural area, especially in winter time. secondly, positive leisure activities which substitute gambling needs to be developed, especially for men. Thirdly, family education and family therapy Program is required for the pathological gamblers and their families. Fourthly, governmental policy is necessary for the budget to prevent and treat gambling problems.

Case Study on the Survival Experiences of Gambling Dependents (도박의존자의 생존경험에 관한 사례연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to learn about the meaning and factors of gambling in one's life. Thus, it is to develop contents that help gamblers improve their quality of life by broadening their understanding of gambling. To this end, data from women who had experienced gambling and also quit gambling were collected and analyzed. What are the factors that deter gambling and gambling and what is the dynamics that lead to life? The research approach is a technical case study. The story and context of her life were in mind. The results of the matrix analysis were derived from 15 subcategories and 8 upper categories. The result was to adapt and cope within the mental and economic deficits and to survive survival. The researcher suggested that content development is necessary. It is necessary to develop counseling contents that can heal their pain, stress, and heartache and to help one parent's family's economic survival. It also suggested that the development of capacity-enhancing contents such as technical training to cope with social structural changes is necessary.
