  • Performance characteristics of propulsion systems applied to UAVs that under development or completed in foreign countries were analyzed. In this study, aircraft mission and performance characteristics of ten UAVs were reviewed and compared with current available civil and military aircraft. Also performance characteristics of UAVs propulsion systems were summarized and engine design parameters were analyzed. Thrust, SFC and design parameters such as pressure ratio and bypass ratio of UAV propulsion system were compared with the current existing civil and military aircraft engines. From this study, the design parameters of the propulsion system applied to the UAV were well understood.

  • This paper dealt with the performance modeling of a low bypass turbofan engine for supersonic aircraft. The Pratt and Whitney F100-PW-229 engine has been employed for low bypass turbofan engine performance modeling. Generally, the complete commercially-classified informations concerning the engine are unknown. The components' generic characteristics and assumptions made in order to build the F100-PW-229 engine performance model using by the published data from the open literature as basic data are described. Through the comparison of engine performance model's analysis data using Gasturb11 with engine deck data showed that the engine performance model was evaluated to be properly constructed.

  • There are two definite objects for developing the startup transient of liquid rocket engine. One is to achieve the repeatability of startup to ensure higher reliability, and the other is to reduce the time of the startup transient. Typically in the initial phase of engine development as we are currently opposing, it is hard to estimate engine startup time due to the lack of experiences. In this work, a startup transient analysis tool was developed with the introduction of the mathematical model for each component of pump-fed liquid rocket engine system. Startup transient was investigated for a 25 ton class gas generator cycle engine to find necessary time for reaching steady state from startup and this enabled to reveal dynamic characteristics of the engine.

  • Unlike most aerodynamic wind-tunnel, Scramjet Engine Test Facility(SETF) of Korea Aerospace Research Institute should simulate enthalpy condition at a flight condition. SETF is a blow-down type, high-enthalpy wind tunnel. To attain a flight condition, a highly stagnated air comes into the test cell through a supersonic nozzle. Also, an air ejector of the SETF is used for simulating altitude conditions of the engine, and facility starting. SETF has a free-jet type test cell and this free-jet type test cell can simulate a boundary layer effect between an airplane and engine using facility nozzle, but it is too difficult to predict the nature of the facility. Therefore it is required to understand the starting characteristics of the facility by experiments. In this paper, the starting characteristics of the SETF and modifications of the ejector are described.
