  • Adaptive valve timing control is one of the promising techniques to accomplish the optimized mixture formation and combustion depending on the load and speed, which is needed to meet the future challenges in reducing fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. The behavior and the effect of adaptive valve timing control system has been investigated by computer simulation, which simulates the gas dynamics in engines. Improved fuel economy can be achieved by reduction of pumping loss under low and mid load conditions. EIVC(Early Intake Valve Closing) strategy turns out to be superior to LIVC(Late Intake Valve Closing) strategy in reducing fuel consumption. Deterioration of combustion quality can be overcome by introducing LIVO(Late Intake Valve Opening) strategy, which increases turbulent intensity in cylinders. Furthermore, LIVO can reduce HC emission by decreasing the required amount of fuel to be injected during cold start.

  • It is important during FSD(Full Scale Development) period to verify whether the aircraft system function meets the aircraft requirements and functional performance. Especially, the functionality of the integrated propulsion system should be verified to evaluate the compatibility with aircraft. Various flight tests such as the engine airstart test, the engine horsepower extraction test, the backup throttle functionality test had been performed to evaluate the engine/aircraft compatibility with T-50 during FSD period. Through such flight tests, it was confirmed that the propulsion system of T-50 was properly designed and installed to the aircraft. This paper shows description on each flight test item, test procedure and test results. It is expected that this paper could be a reference for preparing the propulsion flight test in other aircraft developments.

  • The purpose of this paper analyzes and investigates the failure case studies of electronic control sensors for a LP gas engine. The malfunction of crank angle sensor, which controls a fuel injection volume of LP gas, displays an irregular and non-uniform pulse wave form. The pulse form, which is related to the noise of the crank angle sensor, displays at the rectangular peak with a saw-toothed shape and is intermittently generated with a level of 2.46V noise signal. The malfunction of No. 1 TDC sensor in which is caused from the internal disorder affects to the reduction of engine power and engine stop suddenly. If the malfunction of oxygen sensor is occurred due to a wiring problem of a sensor connector, the LP gas vehicle may produce a shaking and disharmony of an engine because of no signal supply from the oxygen sensor. The air cleaner replica produces the clogging of continuous supply of fresh air. This may cause the retardation of vehicle acceleration and engine disharmony intermittently.

  • Staged combustion cycle engines exhibit higher combustion performance compared with open cycle engines with a gas generator. An advanced research of the staged combustion cycle engine is going on for the next program following the KSLV-II program. Various experiments have been carried out for the technology demonstration model, TDM0A and TDM0B. The experiments on the combustion performance are aimed to understand the engine start condition and combustion characteristics. They also aim to develop the oxidizer-rich pre-burner and the combustor of the staged combustion cycle engine. The engine-shaped model, TDM1A is fabricated based on the experimental data. The combustion experiment of the TDM1A shows that the combustion pressure of the combustor is approximately 91 bar and the turbine rotation is approximately 28,00 rpm. The result is stable and satisfies the development requirements. The present paper reports on the development process and characteristics of engine models from TDM0A to TDM1A.

  • The performance of ramjet engine is closely associated with a supersonic intake. In this study, experiments and computational simulations were conducted to observe the internal flow characteristics of the supersonic intake. The supersonic intake which have self-starting characteristics was designed and manufactured. The flow characteristics was analyzed from the experimental results using the supersonic wind tunnel testing and computational results using RANS equation and Menter's SST turbulence model. The detailed visualization results were suggested for the pseudo-shock wave of stable operations and for the inlet buzz phenomenon of unstable operations.

  • In general, natural gas is used as GHP(Gas Engine Driven Heat Pump) fuel. On this study, the influences of different natural gas heating value on GHP were evaluated. As a result of engine test & field test using low heating value gas($9,800kcal/Nm^3$) as fuel, the engine power was reduced slightly, however the performance of start-up, the stability of operation and the characteristics of emission gas were almost similar. So it is considered that the normal operation of GHP is possible without any tuning when the low heating value($9,800kcal/Nm^3$) of natural gas was used as fuel.

  • Automobile engine oil is the most important lubricant for operating as the engine is started. Recently, manufacturers of the automotive industry and lubricants are considerably improving the quality of oil with additive to extend change cycle period. Most customers are recommended genuine oil among different types from shop expert. Through this report we suggest another reference point for consumer to pick highly efficient lubricant. This report is investigated oil compounds to compare with 6 different automotive considering actual running condition for 7 months. we conducted experiment from physical and chemical perspectives. In the field, through various experiments oil compounds between mineral oil and synthetic oil are largely distinguished in oxidation, viscosity, fluid and TBN. These are influenced by engine part wear as piston, bearing etc. Comparing various investigation with different oil the performance of synthetic oil is shown better condition in flash point, oxidation stability and also found less in change pollutant iron, Al compounds. Additives of oil show clear difference Ca level in detergent-dispersant both mineral oil and synthetic oil. And Zn in extreme pressure additives and P in Lubricity improver make no difference to both.

  • A study is analyzed on the design factor of center-body diffuser and performed on conceptual design of center-body diffuser with computational fluid dynamic. The flow field of center-body diffuser is calculated using axisymmetric two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation with $k-{\epsilon}$ turbulencemodel. The center-body diffuser is compared with second throat exhaust diffuser in terms of starting pressure, the degree of vacuum pressure and the design factors. The counter flow jet on cone-tip of the center-body is applied for thermal protection system in the center-body diffuser.

  • Cold-start emissions are given great importance under the Euro-7 emission standard due to their significant impact on overall vehicle emissions. When an engine is started from a cold state, the combustion process is not yet optimized, leading to higher emissions. Hybrid vehicles, in particular, may face additional challenges, as their engine may remain inactive for extended periods, causing their catalysts to cool down and potentially become less effective in reducing emissions. In the present study, the performance of an electric heater was investigated as a means to enhance the catalyst heating during the start-up time. A simulation tool was utilized to develop a model for the gasoline exhaust aftertreatment system. The result indicates that the heater was able to increase the three-way catalyst temperature to 500℃ in 4 s using 20 kW power. In addition, the implementation of a secondary air supply resulted in reduced temperature overshoot and improved conversion efficiencies.
