  • In this paper, a study on the design of high speed airfoil is described. Various airfoils are investigated and existing airfoils are geometrically interpolated to generate new airfoils. An optimization method is applied to theses new airfoils and their aerodynamic performances are optimized. Through this study, it is demonstrated that the airfoil can be designed using the geometrical interpolation and the optimization method to exhibit good aerodynamic performances.

  • Morphing wing which has a configuration optimized to flight speed and condition is faced to a lot of barriers to be overcome such as actuator technique, structural mechanization technique, flexible skin material, control law, and so on. As the first step for developing a morphing wing with rapid response, we designed and fabricated the morphing airfoil using a SMA(shape memory alloy) wire actuator and torsional bias springs. The design concept of the morphing airfoil was verified through operation test. The measured results show that the flap deflects smoothly and fast.

  • Tailless aircraft designed for stealth efficiency uses spoilers instead of rudders for the directional control. When the spoiler is rapidly deployed, highly nonlinear and unsteady aerodynamic characteristics can be generated, resulting in adverse effects on aircraft flight performance. This paper investigates the aerodynamic characteristics of an airfoil with moving spoiler using dynamic mesh CFD technique. The effects of spoiler operation speed, mounting location, and deployment scheduling are analyzed to reduce the adverse effects of the spoiler's dynamic operation. The results shows that the adverse effects of dynamic spoiler can be reduced by appropriate selection of the spoiler mounting location and deployment scheduling.

  • Aerodynamic analysis of an airfoil in the transonic region was automated in order to enable parametric study by using the journal file of the commercial analysis code FLUENT, pre/post process Gambit and computational mathematics code MATLAB. The automated capability was illustrated via NACA 0012 and RAE 2822 airfoils. This analysis was carried out at Mach numbers ranged from 0.70 to 0.80, angles of attack; 1$^{\circ}$, 2$^{\circ}$ and 4$^{\circ}$, Reynolds numbers; 4.0${\times}$106, 6.5${\times}$106. The analysis results of a pressure coefficient were verified by comparing with the experimental data which were measured in terms of chord length because the pressure coefficient of an airfoil surface is a good estimator of flow characteristics. The results of two airfoils show that this analysis code is useful enough to be used in the design optimization of airfoil.

  • Genetic Algorithms (GA) have some difficulties in practical applications because of too many function evaluations. To overcome these limitations, an approximated modeling method such as Response Surface Modeling(RSM) is coupled to GAs. Original RSM method predicts linear or convex problems well but it is not good for highly nonlinear problems cause of the average effect of the least square method(LSM). So the locally approximated methods. so called as moving least squares method(MLSM) have been used to reduce the error of LSM. In this study, the efficient evolutionary GAs tightly coupled with RSM with MLSM are constructed and then a 2-dimensional inviscid airfoil shape optimization is performed to show its efficiency.

  • The use of evolutionary algorithm is limited in the field of aerodynamics, mainly because the population-based search algorithm requires excessive CPU time. In this paper a coupling method with adaptive range genetic algorithm for floating point and back-propagation neural network is proposed to efficiently obtain a converged solution. As a result, it is shown that a reduction of 14% and 33% respectively in wave drag and its consumed time can be achieved by the new method.
