  • This paper describes a metacarpophalangeal joint flexion and interphalangeal joint flexion of the thumb as one area of healthcare. Metacarpophalangeal joint flexion refers to bending the thumb metacarpophalangeal joint, and interphalangeal joint flexion refers to bending the thumb interphalangeal joint. When bending the joints, if the angle is below a certain angle, or if you feel pain, you have an abnormality. In addition, prevention and therapy of the thumb joint were also suggested.

  • The healthcare industry is expected to the range of services will be expanded and management will be done throughout the life cycle by combining Big Data, Information and Communications Technologies (ICT), and IT equipment. This paper describes a metacarpophalangeal joint flexion and interphalangeal joint flexion of the thumb as one area of healthcare. Experiments were performed on metacarpophalangeal joint flexion and interphalangeal joint flexion in the thumb joint in the case of 50 people in their 50s. The system is limited to a portion of the body, but if it is partially expanded, it will be the basis for building a Big Data healthcare system.

  • Recently, according to the limelight of Fintech, simple payment using biometric at smartphone is widely used. In this paper, we propose a new contactless biometric method using thumb image without additional sensors unlike previous biometrics such as fingerprint, iris, and vein recognition. In our method, length, width, and skin texture information are used as features. For that, illumination normalization, skin region segmentation, size normalization and alignment procedures are sequentially performed from the captured thumb image. Then, correlation coefficient is calculated for similarity measurement. To analyze recognition accuracy, genuine and imposter matchings are performed. At result, we confirmed the FAR of 1.68% at the FRR of 1.55%. In here, because the distribution of imposter matching is almost normal distribution, our method has the advantage of low FAR. That is, because 0% FAR can be achieved at the FRR of 15%, the proposed method is enough to 1:1 matching for payment verification.

  • Calcifying aponeurotic fibroma is a rare benign soft tissue tumor that usually involves distal extremities in children and adolescents, especially the hands and feet. We report a case of calcifying aponeurotic fibroma arising in a 14-year-old boy who complained of right thumb mass. Surgical excision was performed. The resected specimen showed a $2.0{\times}1.5cm$ grayish white, fibrotic tissue. Histologic examination showed proliferation of fibroblastic cells with infiltrative growth pattern. Foci of calcification and chondroid differentiation were present.

  • Stroke patients should exercise for the rehabilitation of their fingers, because they can't use their hand and fingers. The moving direction of thumb of five fingers is different that of four fingers (force finger, middle finger, ring finger, little finger). The thumb rehabilitation robot for rehabilitation exercise must be included a force control system, because robot can injure thumb by applying too much force. In this paper, the rectangular-type thumb rehabilitation robot was developed for stroke patient's thumb rehabilitation exercise of the flexibility rehabilitation exercise. The characteristic test of the developed rectangular-type thumb rehabilitation robot was carried out with normal men in their twenties. As a result, it is thought that the robot can be used for the flexibility rehabilitation exercise of stroke patient's thumb.

  • Purpose : To investigate the difference of total activation in visual area, motor area, and cerebellum according to the stimulation paradigm. Materials and Methods : Functional MR imaging was performed in 5 healthy volunteers with visual and motor activity using EPI technique. LED and Checker-Board stimulation were performed for visual activity. Thumb motion and Finger Tapping were performed for motor and cerebellum activity. Stimulus timing was 60sec. off, 120sec. on, 60sec. off. Data processing was carried out by using the cross-correlation method for each pixel. Each pixel was then selected and assumed activated if the correlation coefficient was equal or larger than a threshold value. Time course data was obtained by calculating the total activation which was defined as the number of activated pixel x averaged pixel intensity. Results : In the case of visual activity with LED stimulation, we found increased total activity of more than 100% compared with Checker-Board stimulation. In the case of motor area and cerebellum with Finger tapping stimulation, we found increased total activity of more than 10% and 150%, respectively compared with Thumb motion stimulation.
