The characteristics of sentence reading intonations in North Korean defectors based on pitch range and an auditory-perceptual rating scale (북한이탈주민의 문장 읽기 억양 특성-음도범위와 청지각적 평가를 중심으로)

  • This study aimed to compare the prosodic characteristics of North Korean defectors and South Koreans in three types of sentences (declarative, interrogative, and negative) in two reading tasks (short and dialogue) through acoustic analysis and auditory-perceptual evaluation. In addition, this study examined the relationship between the auditory-perceptual evaluation scores and self-assessment questionnaires on intonation for North Korean defectors. The participants were 15 North Korean defectors and 15 Korean speakers with standard Seoul accents. For statistical analysis, three-way mixed ANOVA and multivariate analysis were performed within the three types of sentences in the reading tasks through acoustic analysis and the Mann-Whitney U Test for auditory-perceptual evaluation. Pearson's product-moment correlation coefficients were also used to identify the correlations between the results of the self-assessment questionnaire on intonation and the auditory-perceptual evaluation. The North Korean defectors were found to have a significantly lower pitch range and auditory-perceptual evaluation score than South Koreans in reading tasks. Moreover, there was a significant correlation between their auditory-perceptual evaluations and self-assessment questionnaires on intonation. The study findings suggest that North Korean defectors, who face many challenges with intonation, showed a tendency to think that their intonation differed from the standard Korean intonation and showed better auditory evaluation results for interrogative sentences.

An Internet-based Self-Learning Educational System for Efficient Learning of Java Language (효율적인 자바언어 학습을 위한 인터넷기반 자율학습시스템의 구현)

  • This paper presents an internet-based self-learning educational system which can be enhancing efficiency in the learning process of Java language. The proposed self-learning educational system is called Java Web Player(JWP), which is a Java application program and is executable through Java Web Start technologies. Also, three important sequential learning processes : concept learning process, programming practice process and assessment process are integrated in the proposed JWP using Java Web Start technologies. This JWP enables the learners to achieve efficient and interesting self-learning since the learning process is designed to enhance the multimedia capabilities on the basis of various educational technologies. Furthermore, internet-based on-line voice presentation and its related texts together with moving images are synchronized for efficient language learning process. Also, a simple and useful Java compiler is included in the JWP for providing language practice environment such as coding, editing, executing and debugging Java source files. Finally, repeated practice can make the learners to understand easily the key concepts of Java language. Simple multiple choices are given suddenly to the learners while they are studying through the JWP and the test results are displayed on the message box. This assessment process is very essential to increase the learner's academic capability.

Analysis of research trends related to discourse: Focusing on domestic research from 2010 to 2023 (담화 관련 연구동향 분석 : 2010년 ~ 2023년 국내 연구를 중심으로)

  • This study conducted a literature analysis to examine the overall trend of speech-language pathology in discourse research, focusing on studies on the topic of discourse from 2010 to 2023. Twenty-five papers were selected and analyzed in terms of research status, research subjects (age and subject type), and research methods (type and task). As a result, first, looking at the annual status of discourse research, it was confirmed that it is increasing starting from 2015 compared to 2010 to 2014. Second, the age of the research subjects and the types of experimental and control groups in the experimental study were examined. First, when analyzing the age of the subjects, research was actively conducted on school-age subjects (12 studies, 48.00%). When looking at the analysis of the types of experimental group subjects, the Normal group was the most (4 studies (19.04%)), and the control group subject type was also conducted with Normal as the control group (13 studies (61.90%)). It was the most. Third, in the analysis of research methods, it was found that the research type was very biased towards experimental studies, with 21 studies (84.00%). The type of research in terms of time was cross-sectional studies, which accounted for a high proportion of 21 studies (84.00%), and the research project used to evaluate discourse ability with a high proportion was discourse production, with a total of 12 studies (48.00%). This study comprehensively looked at discourse-related research related to language development and language disorders and sought to identify recent trends and the direction in which discourse-related research should move. The analysis of this study was limited to domestic papers. In follow-up research, we hope to understand the flow of research and discuss it, including overseas research related to discourse.

  • Due to the development of wireless devices such as smart-phone and internet, a lot of linguistic resources actively are opened in each area of expertise. Also, various systems using semantic web technologies are developing for determining whether such information are useful or not. In order to build these systems, the processes of data collection and natural language processing are necessary. But, there is few systems to use of integrating software and data required those processes. In this paper, we propose the system, uLAMP, integrating software and data related to natural language processing. In terms of economics, the cost can be reduced by preventing duplicated implementation and data collection. On the other hand, data and software usability are increasing in terms of management aspects. In addition, for the evaluation of uLAMP usability and effectiveness, user survey was conducted. Through this evaluation, the advantages of the currentness of data and the ease of use are found.

Determinants of English Ability among Korean and Other Asian Immigrants in the US (미국에 거주하는 한국인과 아시아인들의 영어사용능력 결정요인에 관한 연구)

  • The development of language skills among immigrants is important for their economic adjustment in their host societies since language is an important dimension of the skill levels of immigrants relevant for the labor markets of the host countries. Moreover, language plays a key role in the social adjustment of immigrants and in the social and political cohesion particularly in the society like the US that has diverse racial and ethnic groups. The main purposes of the present study are to analyze the determinants of English abilities of Korean and other Asian immigrants in the US. The present study utilizes the Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS, S, 5%) in the US. We adopted the ordered probit technique to analyze qualitative differences of English ability. The study found that English fluency increases with a longer duration in the US, the presence of children in the household, living in an area in which a smaller proportion speak ones mother tongue, a younger age at immigration, a higher level of schooling. However, there are marked variations in levels of English proficiency among Asian immigrants.

A Exploratory Comparison Study on Anchoring Effect according to Regularity of Snack's Shape (스낵모양의 규칙성에 따른 앵커링 효과의 탐색적 비교연구)

  • The purpose of this study examines the influence of anchoring and adjustment according to regularity of snack's shape. Especially this study choose 'choco chip' as a snack with regularity to compare with 2012's study. The results of this study are as follows. 1) The anchoring and adjustment also appears in 'choco chip' with regularity. But statistical meaning is different from the result of prior study. 2) The difference of anchoring effect reduced according to additional verbal information in 'choco chip' with regularity. but has no statistical meaning of interaction effect. However the causes of two results are different. 3) The interaction effect of cognitive load(without vs. moderate vs. high) is meaningful statistically. difference of anchoring effect reduced according to additional verbal information in 'choco chip' with regularity in 'choco chip' with regularity. This study provides strategic implication that it overcomes the limitation of the prior resuarch and may reinforce the biased judgement by cognitive overload.

  • 한반도 국가바람지도(김현구, 2009)는 한국에너지기술연구원에서 지식경제부의 부처임무사업으로 구축되었으며 현재 웹서비스(http://www.kier-wind.org)를 통하여 정보를 제공하고 있다. 국가바람지도는 수치기상예측(NWP; Numerical Weather Prediction) 모델을 이용하여 영토, 영해에 대해 $1km{\times}1km$의 고해상도로 작성한 뒤(이순환 등, 2009) 풍력자원 정보로 재가공되었다. 한반도 국가바람지도는 5년의 장기간에 대한 시계열 수치기상예측에 의하여 구축되었기 때문에 데이터베이스(DB; database)의 효율적 관리가 필연적으로 요구된다. MM5 또는 WRF 모델의 고유 출력포맷의 자료구조는 풍력자원분석에 필요한 기상요소 외에도 대기과학자에게 필요한 수많은 기상인자를 종합적으로 포함하고 있다. 따라서 2차원 층(layer) 또는 3차원 공간분포 분석 및 계산격자인 셀(cell)에서의 1차원 시계열 분석 등 다양한 자료축출에는 비효율적인 자료구조가 된다. 이러한 자료구조의 불편을 해소하기 위해서는 기상요소별로 독립적이고 빈번한 시계열 자료 추출에 효율성을 가지며 어떤 프로그래밍 언어를 사용하든지 직관적으로 쉽게 사용할 수 있는 바람지도 데이터베이스의 재구성이 요구된다. 이에 대용량 수치자료의 처리 측면에서 장점을 가지는 과학기술 프로그래밍 언어인 IDL을 기반으로 국가바람지도의 자료구조를 효율화하여 데이터베이스화 하였으며 IDL에 내재된 그래픽 기능을 활용하여 가시화를 구현함으로써 연구개발자의 입장에서 국가바람지도의 활용성 및 효율성을 향상시키고자 하였다.

Effects of Group Piano Playing on International Marriage Immigrant Women's Self-Efficacy; A Case Study (국제결혼 이주여성의 자기효능감 증진을 위한 집단 피아노 연주 활동 사례 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness of the group piano playing program, which was a part of psycho-emotional support program, on international marriage immigrant women's self-efficacy. For this case study, five international marriage immigrant women from "N Multi-culture Supporting Agency" were agreed to participate in the study. The group piano playing program was implemented for ten sessions. Each session took place once a week for ten weeks. In order to examine the effects of self-efficacy on the participants, both quantitative and qualitative methods were used as a mixed methods research design. As a result, the participants' self-efficacy average score was statistically significant (p< .05). Also, qualitative analysis of participants' verbal and behavioral response showed positive changes in their level of self-efficacy. Therefore, the results of this study suggest that the group piano playing can facilitate as an effective intervention to promote the self-efficacy on international marriage immigrant women.

The influence of users' satisfaction with AWE on English learning achievement through self-efficacy: using PLS-SEM (영어 자동쓰기평가(AWE) 사용만족도가 자기효능감을 매개로 학업성취감에 미치는 영향: PLS-SEM 모델 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the influence of users' satisfaction with the Automatic Writing Evaluation(AWE) on learners' sense of learning achievement through self efficacy in English writing class. AWE is a tool that automatically provides feedback on writing outputs by AI technology. College students were asked to write essays for each topic and use AWE to get feedback on their drafts, and finally revise them referring to the feedback. A questionnaire survey was conducted for the data collection. The data was analyzed using SPSS, and smart PLS-SEM along with bootstrapping techniques, The results of the study reveal the followings: 1) the convenience and usefulness of AWE had a positive effect on the willingness to reuse it; 2) the satisfaction with AWE had a positive effect on self-efficacy; 3) self-efficacy had a positive effect on learning achievement in terms of emotional and linguistic aspects. With the development of the 4th industry and A.I. technology, it is recommended to introduce new materials or programs such as AWE in English education.

Linguistic Characteristics of the Proverb and it's Effective Application to French Learning (격언의 언어학적 특성과 프랑스어 학습 적용 방안)

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the diversity of French learning materials and suggest a learning method to increase the efficiency of learning. In the first part, we explore the linguistic characteristics of the proverb. In the second part, we present the examples that can be utilized in actual learning. In terms of teaching methods, sharing a common cultural consciousness is important for language and communication between interlocutors. In view of this point, the proverb has an extremely important value in the linguistic dimension. It means that the proverb can serve as a very useful material for the comparison of the morphology and phonetics of French. The efficiency of learning can be increased if we can apply an adequate learning plan using proverbs in accordance to the learner's level and the learning contents.
