  • The purpose of this study was to determine whether there are differences in the verbal interactions of earth science gifted depending on their communications structures and group status in small group activities. To this end, a small group activity was conducted to measure the density of the earth, and 8 small groups were selected, including 4 co-ownership type and 4 monopolistics type groups with different communication structures. And then, the framework was developed for analyzing verbal interactions to compare the differences in characteristics between small groups. The results are as follows. First, regardless of the communication structures, there were showing a simple pingpong-type communication structures for all small groups. Second, negative interactions such as 'restraint', 'command', 'complaint', and 'lack of confidence' predominantly appeared in all small groups. Third, the students in the status of out-lookers in small groups were mainly verbal interactions, such as instructing the other person, acting against the other person's actions, and expressing dissatisfaction with the attitudes and abilities of members. Therefore, teachers should guide students to use higher-level verbal interactions in their group activities in small group activities, and engage in students communication to prevent negative interactions from occurring. The teachers also need to check the level of achievement for students in the status of out-lookers in advance and guide them to participate more actively in small group activities. This study is meaningful in that it can be sued to design teaching and learning to improve students' problem solving and communication skills.

It is to find a significant influence by analyzing the relationship between the factors of the observed variables on the latent variables of communication. The subject of this study is 4th grade elementary school students in 1,392 households, excluding 36 non-respondents to the language development question, out of 2150 households in the 11th year of the Panel Study on Korean Children(2018) data, 1428 households excluding 722 households who did not participate in the survey. As a result of the study, it was found that the total effect, direct effect, and indirect effect among the three latent variables except for communication intention were all significant in the effect analysis of the research model. Specifically, not only did nonverbal communication have a direct effect on discourse management ability, but also the indirect influence mediated by situational control and application ability was significant in the relationship between nonverbal communication and discourse management ability. As a result, it was found that the higher the non-verbal communication and situational adjustment and adaptation ability, the higher the discourse management ability.

  • At old age, as people depend on superficial clues when they interpret the overall context of communication, their ability to understand connotative and figurative words and articles could deteriorate. In this study, 50 normal young(junior) people and normal old(senior) people were made to perform a task to understand similes, metaphors, idioms, and proverbs, the sub-areas of figurative language. For the task, participants were made to understand a paragraph consisting of several sentences and select a correct answer representing appropriate figurative language. As a result of the analysis, first, old people showed a lower level of performance than young people in all the sub-areas of figurative language. Second, in understanding idiomatic words and proverbs, old people showed a lower level of performance due to unfamiliarity. Third, for the types of wrong answers, old people mostly understood only the literal meanings in all the sub-areas of figurative language. Due to aging, old people come to have a lowered level of the pragmatic language ability, reasoning ability, and inhibiting ability to efficiently communicate with others considering certain situations and contexts. Thus, old people could have difficulties in understanding inner meanings from others in daily communication.

  • This study aims to investigate the effects of literary texts as a teaching tool to enhance college students' English communicative competence both in linguistic aspects and affective ones. The control group used only the course book as study material, whereas the target group read four short stories along with it and engaged in a series of follow-up tasks. To measure their English competence, the researcher had both groups take a pre-test and a post-test, compared the results, and analyzed the data using SPSS. The study indicates that though the target students' post-test scores increased, the result failed in reaching a significant level. Nevertheless, reading and discussing literature facilitated the target students' affective aspects of communication. This article points out some other limitations of utilizing literary texts in language teaching and suggests the need for further research to deal with the issues.
