A pelagic tuna longline research cruise in the eastern and central Pacific Ocean from September to October of 2006 was conducted to compare catch rates with the use of different hook type and bait combinations. Traditional tuna hooks (J 4) and three circle hook types (C15, C16, C18), along with five bait types (chub mackerel (CM), jack mackerel (JM), milkfish (MF), sardine (SD), and squid (SQ)) and hook number as a proxy for hook depth were evaluated for their effect on bigeye tuna catch rates (fish per 1,000 hooks) using Generalized Linear Models (GLMs). Results from 28 sets indicated significant differences in bigeye catch rates between individual longline sets and hook number. The GLM explained 33% of the deviance in bigeye catch rates with these two factors. An alternative model formulation included bait type which had a small effect (explaining 2.7% of the deviance) on catch rates. Hook type had a negligible and non-significant effect in the GLMs. These results indicate that all of the hooks and baits tested are equally effective at catching bigeye tuna and that hook number (depth) was the paramount operational factor in explaining bigeye tuna catch rates.

Vertical distribution of squids in relation to oceanographic structure was analyzed on the basis of experimental squid hand jigging fishing by R/V Pusan 851 in the area of 34°∼47° N, 150° E∼170°W in the North Pacific in summer from 1987 through 1993 with exception of 1991. The 6 species of squids showed different patterns of vertical and horizontal distribution as following; Boreopacific gonate squid (Gonatopsis borealis) were mainly caught in the layer of 71-80m fishing depth of the Subarctic Domain with water temperature of 6∼11℃ and salinity of 32.2∼33.6‰ and distributed in the latitudes of 41°∼43° N. Boreal clubhook squid (Onychoteuthis borealijaponica) were mainly caught in the layer of 11∼20m fishing depth of the Subarctic Domain with water temperature of 10∼12℃ and salinity of 32.9∼33.6‰ and distributed in the latitudes of 41°∼42N°. Tapanese flying squid (Todarodes pacificus) were mainly caught in the layer of 11∼20m fishing depth of the Transition Zone and the Subtropical Domain with water temperature of 15∼18℃ and salinity of 33.6∼34.0‰ and distributed in the latitudes of 40°∼42°N. Neon flying squid (Ommastrephes bartrami) were mainly caught in the layer of surface∼10m fishing depth of the Subarctic Convergence Zone and the Transition Zone with water temperature of 16∼17℃ and salinity of 33.7∼34.4‰ and distributed in the latitudes of 39 °∼41°N. Luminous flying squid (Symplectoteuthis luminosa) were mainly caught in the layer of 11 20m fishing depth of the Transition Zone and the Subtropical Domain with water temperature of 18∼20℃ and salinity of 33.8∼34.6‰ and distributed in the latitudes of 37°∼39°N. Purpleback flying squid (Symplectoteuthis oualaniensis) were mainly caught in the layer of surface∼10m fishing depth of the Subtropical Domain with water temperature of 24∼25℃ and salinity of 34.2∼34.4‰ and distributed in the latitude of 36°∼37°N.

We examined the state of Korean pomfret(Pampus echinogaster) in Korean waters and considered the management strategy of the stock based on the theory yield Per recruit. It is not facile to discriminate Korean pomfret distributed in Korean waters from silver pomfret (p. argenteus) due to the similarities in their external morphologies. For this rea- son, Korean pomfret has been treated in silver pomfret in fisheries statistics of Korea. In this study, we asserted Korean pomfret from pomfrets caught commercially by the morphology, from which we recognized that Korean pomfret took $60\~70\%$ in catch(in weight) and that the smaller the body length, the higher the proportion of Korean pomfret. Parameters estimated for Korean pomfret were as follows: natural mortality(M) = 0.6, fishing mortality(F) =0.924(mean value for $1986\~1988$), age at recruit to fishery($t_r$) =0.19 yrs, age at first capture($t_c$) : 0.49 yrs, and the rate of recruit of age-0 fish to fishery(Q) = 0.29. The results obtained from the theory of yield per recruit indicated that the present state of stock was below the optimum level of exploitation and that the control of fishing intensity rarely had an effect on the increasing of yield. Accordingly, we conclude that proper management can be made by increasing the current age of 0.49 yrs at first capture to 1.5 yrs.
Population dynamics of Matted sole Limanda yokohamae($G{\"{U}}NTHER$) in Tokyo bay, Japan has been studied by virtual population analysis (VPA) for multi cohort and experimental fishing. Based on the biological data, the present parameters of the Limanda yekohamae stock at the Tokyo bay, Japan were estimated as follows: natural mortality coefficient(M) were 0.313 for male and 0.250 for female, terminal fishing mortality coefficient(F) were 2.190 for male, and 0.798 for female, rate of exploitation(E) was $30\%\;to\;50\%$. From the result of virtual population analysis for multi cohort, the population size were estimated from 3,5000,000 to 9,200,000 fishes, according to the result of experimental fishing, estimated stock size were 2,400,000 to 8,700,000 fishes. Stock size difference of the two methods were about two times in 1987, however, other years has been showed from 0.8 to 1.5 times. Both method has been showed same increase and decrease tendency of the c. p. u. e. and catches. From the isopleth diagram plot by Beverton and Holt's yield per recruit, the catches could be increase two times for female, 1.3 times for male than present aspects by the fishing management. And further, as reducing fishing effort, extension of mesh size and rising the length at first caputre, are reasonable in order to manage the stock at the optimum level.

Underwater shape and hook depth in tuna longline gear are important factors to decide fishing performance. It also should be considered that management and analysis of hooked rate data from hooked fish species and sizes, and each fishing would be used as a reference data in the future fishing. In this research, after analyzing underwater shape of tuna longline gear by current direction and speed using simulation, experiments were executed in flume tank to verify accuracy of the analysis. Also using the depth of each hook from the simulation, a database system was setup to process the data of bait and hooked fish species. The results were as follows;1. When the attack angle and the shortening rate are fixed, a decrease of the hook depth is proportion to an increase of current speed. 2. When the shortening rate and current speed are fixed, a decrease of hook depth is proportion to an increase of attack angle. 3. When the attack angle and velocity of flow are fixed, a decrease of hook depth is proportion to an increase of shortening rate 4. As a result of comparison between the underwater shape by simulation and that by model gear, the result of the simulation was very close to that of model gear within $$ {\pm}3%$$ 3% error range. 5. In this research, hooked rate database system using hook depth of simulation can analyze the species and size of fish by the parameter; bait. hook depth, so It could be helpful to manage and analyze the hooked data on the field.

Spatio-temporal variation in species composition, abundance and distribution of fisheries resources caught by large purse seine off Korea from 1991 to 1994 was analysed. Out of 19 species, Scomber japonicus (54.7%), Sardinops melanostictus (20.4%), Trachurus japonicus (9.1%), and Scomberomorus niphonius (6.2%) were predominated in catch. These 4 pelagic fishes occupied 90% of total catch. Major pelagic fishes caught by large purse seine were dispersed to northward from spring to summer, and migrated to the southern wintering ground during winter. Fishing effort (number of haul) was high in summer, but catch per unit effort showed a peak in winter. The high CPUE in winter seemed to be related to aggregation of the pelagic fish to the wintering ground in the southern sea. After spawning, they were widely dispersed for feeding in warm months.
