This study explored differences in maternal parenting behaviors, children's emotional intelligence, and daily hassles by children's sex and types of aggression. Subjects were 200 children in 4th, 5th, and 6th grade and their mothers from four elementary schools. Instruments were the Maternal Parenting Behaviors Scale (Kim, 2006), the Emotional Intelligence Scale (Lee, 1997), the Daily Hassles Scale(Min & Yoo, 1998), and the Peer-nomination Measure (Crick, 1995; Crick & Grotpeter, 1995). Data were subjected to descriptive statistical analysis and multivariate analysis of variance. Findings revealed that the relational aggressive group had higher emotional intelligence and more daily hassles; girls had higher level of daily hassles than boys. Maternal parenting behaviors did not differ by child's sex and type of aggression.
This study examined the moderating role of young children's playfulness and the association between maternal parenting and young children's peer competency. The subjects of the present study were 132 4 or 5-year-old young children and their mothers recruited from child-care centers in Seoul and Gyeonggi-Do. The findings of this Study were as follows : First, maternal parenting influenced children's peer competency. Second, young children's playfulness influenced young children's peer competency. Third, the association between overprotective and permissive maternal parenting styles and young children's leadership abilities were negative only in the low cognitive playfulness group. Fourth, the association between maternal rejective and negligent parenting and young children's socialibility were found to be negative only in the low physical playfulness group.
This study examined effects of children's emotionality and emotion regulation, and maternal parenting behaviors on children's peer competence. Subjects were 222 4- and 5-year-olds children and their mothers. Classroom teachers rated each child's peer competence and emotion regulation; mothers responded to questionnaires on their child's emotionality and on their own parenting behavior. Results of this study were : (1) children's positive and negative emotionality and emotion regulation influenced children's peer competence. (2) Mother's warm and encouraging behaviors were also associated with children's peer competence. (3) Children's emotion regulation rather than negative emotion and mother's warm and encouraging behaviors predicted peer competence. Child characteristics were stronger predictors than parenting behaviors.
The purpose of study was to examine child emotion regulation as a function of child's sex, temperament, mother's emotion regulation, and mother's parenting. The subjects were 386 mothers of fifth or sixth graders in Seoul and Kyonggi province. The data were gathered through questionnaires developed for the current study. The major findings were as follows: 1) There were significant sex differences in some categories of child's emotion regulation. 2) The more active the child's temperament, the child showed more negative emotion regulation(venting, aggressive expression, avoidance). 3) Mother's negative emotion regulation was significantly related to the child's negative emotion regulation. 4) There were significant correlations between mother's parenting and child's emotion regulation. That is, mother's positive parenting was related to child's positive emotion regulation. 5) The relationship between mother's emotion regulation and child's emotion regulation was mediated by mothers' parenting.
This study investigated the effects of maternal parenting behaviors and preschooler's emotional regulation on their internet-game addictive inclination. The participants were 129 mothers of 5 and 6 year-old preschoolers and their teachers from two day dare centers and one kindergarten in Seoul and Kyung-gi province. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and hierarchical regressions by SPSS program (12.0 version). The major findings were as follows: (1) Boys showed higher score of internet-game addictive inclination than that of girls. (2) mother's consistent parenting behaviors and preschooler's other-regulation behaviors significantly explained preschooler's internet-game addictive inclination. In conclusion, maternal parenting behaviors and preschooler's emotional regulation have influenced on preschooler's internet-game addictive inclination.
This study examined the relations between coparenting, marital quality, mothers’personality and children’s initial temperament. Subjects were 174 mothers of 4~6 year-old children, and they answered questionnaires regarding coparenting, marital quality, personality, and initial temperatment of their children. For mothers of both boys and girls, positive marital quality wass related positively to warmth, support, and integrity coparenting and negatively to conflict coparenting. Only for mothers of girls, higher warmth and integrity coparenting was shown when they were extroverted. while those who were neurotic showed higher conflict coparenting. For mothers of boys, support coparenting was low when their sons were emotional. Mothers of girls showed lower level of warmth and integrity coparenting when their daughters were avoidant. emotional and sensitive.
The purpose of this study was to examine the relations of peer competence to children's interpersonal problem solving skills and mothers' parenting behavior. The subjects were 88, 6-year-old children and their mothers. Instruments used included the Peer Competence Scale, PIPS, and the revised version of IPBI. The data were analyzed with Pearson correlations, partial correlations, and stepwise regression. Children's sociability was explained mostly by mothers' intimacy-reasoning guidance, parental involvement, and children's positive alternative Solutions. Children's prosocial behavior was explained mostly by mothers' intimacy-reasoning guidance and children's positive alternative solutions. Children's leadership was explained most by mothers' involvement and Omit selling in parenting.
Data were collected from 110 preschoolers, 59 boys, 51 girls (ages 4-5) and their mothers. Peer competence was assessed by the Child Behavior Scale (Birsh & Ladd, 1998) and the Peer Rating Scale (Asher et al., 1979). Children's internal representations were measured by the MacArthur Story-Stem Battery (2004) and coded by the MacArthur Narrative Coding Manual (2004). Maternal parenting behaviors were observed during mother-child interaction at home and analyzed with the Teaching Strategies Rating Scale (Erickson, Sroufe, & Egeland, 1985). Data were analyzed by structural equation modeling analysis. Results confirmed the pathway from maternal parenting behaviors via children's internal representations to peer competence showing a significantly good model fit.
The purpose of this study was to examine relationships between preschoolers' temperament, mothers' parenting behaviors, and ability to delay gratification. A sample of 131 preschool children aged from 4 to 5 participated in a delay-of-gratification experiment, as reconstructed by Rodriguez and his colleagues (2005). Mothers answered questionnaires on their parenting behaviors and children's temperament. Data were analyzed by t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple regressions. Children's activity as well as mothers' warmth and control predicted the ability to delay gratification; significant interaction effects were found between children's activity and maternal warmth on the ability to delay gratification. It would be plausible to intervene in children's activity level and improve the ability to delay gratification.
This research was a comparative study of children's mothers in counseling and mothers in non-counseling (comparison) groups to examine differences between groups in emotional expressiveness, ambivalence over emotional expressiveness, type of communication and parenting behavior, Subjects were 91 mothers having counseling and 133 mothers in the non-counseling group. Data were analyzed by independent samples t-test. Results showed that mothers in the non-counseling group reported more positive emotional expressiveness than the counseling group. Mothers in the counseling group reported more ambivalence over emotional expressiveness, more negative communications and more negative parenting behavior than the comparison group.
