  • This paper is aimed to introduce to a moving bollard (i.e., smart bollard) to improve the pedestrian safety along the crosswalk in the school zone as a means to physically separate pedestrians and approaching vehicles, to propose the appropriate criteria for its installation and implementation from the traffic engineering perspective, and to evaluate its effectiveness with the microscopic simulation model. The simulation results indicate that implementing the smart bollard results in the decrease of average approaching speed and traffic throughput and the most critical factors affecting its effectiveness are yellow time of the traffic signal directly associated with the location of the advance warning sign and its operation time, 5~6 seconds and 2~3 seconds, respectively.

  • Even though accidents occurred inside urban railway stations demage not only one person, but also surrounding people, it can be prevented by cautious actions. This research aims at infants and children, which can maximize the educational impacts, to develop a safety textbook which can educate safety rules and behavioral know-how to reduce the accidents occurred in urban railway stations, and at parents and teachers to gather opinions through surveys on the research's future direction. This research conducts a case study and comparison analysis on domestic and foreign safety manuals, which is organized in a book form of fairy tales educating safety rules for readers to utilize the urban railway by steps from boarding to taking off. Through a survey we conducted for parents and teachers as providing the safety textbook developed through this research, we could get the positive evaluations and gather opinions on the future research direction. The safety textbook developed in a form of fairy tale book through this research is for infants and children to use the urban railway in a safe manner, which is expected to evoke the interests and curiosity and create the educational impacts on users.

  • Recently the accidents of residual children in vehicles have frequently occurred. In order to prevent this, it is necessary to supplement safety devices together with children safety education. In this paper, we proposed a system to prevent the accidents of leaving kindergarten children in the school bus by detecting the events such as movement, pressure, voice.

  • Recently, Child safety has become one of the issue with Q10 dummy representing large child. The objective of this paper was to evaluate performance of three child restraints system (backless booster, high-back booster and without booster) by changing D-ring location in the rear seat. Sled tests were carried out with a Q 10 in 64km/h frontal impact. Before the dynamic sled tests, we assessed dummy positioning with difference in CRS types and height adjustment positions. Dynamic sled test results indicated that there is different performance of CRS types and belt routing. These test results will use as base line data for development CRS safety performance for Q 10.

  • This survey was conducted to develop an appropriate management for safety of children snacks. In this study, monitorings of food additives such as nine kinds of tar colors (tartrazine, sunset yellow FCF, brilliant blue FCF, indigo carmine, new coccine, amaranth, erythrosine, allura red and fast green FCF) which are sold at stationary store around the school, were performed. Eighty two samples (3 snacks, 71 candies, 4 chocolates and 4 beverages) were analyzed for tar colors. Results of risk assessment for tar colors were expressed as EDI (Estimated Daily Intake) comparing with ADI (Acceptable Daily Intake). The ratio of high risk group for tar color intake (95th) were 0-3.56%. The consumptions of tar colors from domestic and imported products for nine kinds of tar colors in candies were not significantly different. The results of this study indicated that each ED! of nine kinds of tar colors sold at stationary store around the school is much lower than each ADI in general. Consequently, the children snacks are thought to be safe for consumption.
