Feeding Behavior of One-year-old Silver Carp, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, on Dominant Phytoplankton During a Summer in the Enclosure of Shallow-hypertrophic Lake (여름철에 우점하는 식물플랑크톤에 대한 1년생 백연의 먹이습성)

  • The feeding behavior of 1-year-old silver carp, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix (Val.) on phytoplankton species in a shallow hypertrophic lake was studied from 22 May to 18 September, 1997. Over the experimental period, the filter-pore sizes of the fish, the total biomass of the phytoplankton and the water temperature in each enclosure changed little with time. The fish biomass in each enclosure increased with time, while their percentage of weight gain correlated negatively to the stocking density, due perhaps to competition for prey. An analysis of gut contents of silver carp showed a strong similarity between the algal communities in the foregut and the water, and was significant for the fish enclosure with a low density (p<0.05). The presence of silver carp rarely suppressed the abundance of phytoplankton such as Oscillatoria, Anabaena and Melosira even at high ingestion levels. There were weak relationships between the IU values of each phytoplankton and the selectivity of fish on them (r = 0.001, p>0.5). There was no doubt that the silver carp fed unselectively when cyanobacteria populations were high, even though the selectivity index for diatoms was slightly higher than those for cyanobacteria, green algae and cryptomonads. Improvements in methodologies are needed to clearly understand and generalize the feeding behavior of silver carp.

호수 생태계에서의 먹이사슬과 먹이연쇄

  • 호수 생태계내의 생물군집은 생산자로서의 식물플랑크톤과 소비자로서의 동물플랑크톤 및 어류가 주된 위치를 차지하고 세균은 분해자로서 기능한다는 것은 일반적으로 알려진 사실이다. 그러나 1970년대에 들어 세균군집이 생태계내에서 먹이사슬을 연계하는 2차 생산자로서도 기능한다는 사실이 제기되어, 오늘날에는 생태계내에서 세균군집의 역할이 보다 강조되고 있다(6,40,41,42,50). 먹이사슬에 대한 관심은 많은 연구결과들을 생산하였지만 복잡한 먹이사슬 구조는 아직까지 부분적인 이해만을 허락하고 있다. 특히, 어류, 동물 플랑크톤, 식물플랑크톤, 미생물의 각 분야가 서로 구분되어 발전해 왔기 때문에 이들간의 상호작용을 정확하게 밝히는 데에는 많은 한계가 있어 왔다. 1970년대 이래로 담수생태계의 부영양화를 해결하기 위한 방안으로서 생태계내의 먹이 사슬을 이용하는 생물조작의 개념이 대두되었으며, 각 분야의 통합적 연관성을 필요로 함으로써 생태계 이해에 많은 지식을 제공하였다. 이 글에서는 담수생태학의 한 분야로서 생물군집간의 상호작용인 먹이사슬의 연구동향을 생물조작 개념을 중심으로 기술하고자 한다.

Effects of Stocking and Removal of Silver Carp on Plankton Communities in a Shallowhypertrophic Lake (부영양호의 enclosure내에서 어류의 밀도조절이 수질 및 플랑크톤 군집에 미치는 영향)

  • To evaluate the influences of stocking and removal of silver carp on plankton communities and physicochemical parameters, fish biomanipulation was conducted in six enclosures constructed on the coast of a hypertrophic lake during the summer of 1997. Of these, three enclosures were established for the fish-stocking experiment; one fishless enclosure used as a control and two enclosures with high and low densities of fish. The other three enclosures for the fish-removal experiment were prepared in an entirely converse process compared to that for fish stocking. The results of randomized intervention analysis (${\alpha}=0.05$) showed significant changes in several physicochemical parameters and plankton communities after fish stocking and removal. Fish stocking decreased water transparency, DO, pH and chi-a (> $40\;{\mu}m$), while increasing the concentration of nitrogen and chi-a (<$2\;{\mu}m$). However, water transparency did not increase by fish removal. Small plankton communities, such as picocyanobacteria, eukaryotic picoplankton and ciliates (<$2\;{\mu}m$) showed significant reciprocal changes after both fish treatments: increase by the presence of fish and decrease by the absence of fish. No count of large sized phytoplankton and zooplankton showed significant change in the presence of fish, while large zooplankton, Diaphanosoma, Cyclopida and nauplii were significantly increased by fish removal. Although the frequent heavy-winds and endless supply of phosphorus from the lake sediment strongly disturbed the fish behavior and enclosure management, the stocking and removal of silver carp showed an obvious reciprocal influences on plankton communities and its physico-chemical parameters in a shallow-hypertrophic lake.

  • Estimates of larval mortality for many marine fishes are based on field collections from several consecutive ichthyoplankton surveys, assuming that the surveys have covered the entire areas of larval habitats. The oceanic environment, however, is so dynamic and complicated that planktonic forms cannot stay within a confined area for a prolonged period. This note is prepared as a more detailed explanation of the estimates of fish larval mortality in the oceanic dispersing system, as a supplement of Kim and Bang (1990).

The Characteristics of Fish Community and Food Web in Eutrophic Agricultural Reservoir, Jeondae (부영양 농업용저수지인 전대지의 어류군집 및 먹이망 특성)

  • Fish community was investigated in eutrophic Jeondae agricultural reservoir from April to November 2012. The food web structure of major fish species of Jeondae reservoir showed that due to serious organic pollution, the hyper-eutrophic condition with high chemical oxygen demand (COD), chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP), as estimated by stable isotope analysis. Total of 679 individuals were collected from the reservoir, and 9 species were identified. Interestingly, Lepomis macrochirus and Hemiculter eigenmanni known as less sensitive to pollution and water quality deterioration, dominated the reservoir, and their relative abundances were 38% and 27%, respectively. Further, the analysis of the stomach contents revealed that main food source of dominant L. macrochirus was high amount of zooplankton, which includes copepoda and cladocera, while Cyprinidae species mainly consumed organic particles with zooplankton preys. Stable isotope analysis also suggested that L. macrochirus, Carassiusauratus, Pseudorasboraparva, and H. eigenmanni are major zooplantivorous group in the Jeondae Reservoir.

Dietary Contributions of Phytoplankton and Zooplankton to Young Silver Carps (어린 백련어의 성장에 대한 동, 식물플랑크톤의 먹이기여도)

  • Two-monthold silver carps were cultured with seven algal species and zooplankton (Moina macrocopa) in the laboratory. The carps were reared in 10 L translucent cylindrical aquaria with algae and zooplankton for 8 days. The Moina effectively fed almost cultured algae: perfectly removed Cryptomonas (NIES-282) within 60 min. Both algal diets Cryptomonas and Fragilaria (NIES-391) significantly increased the Moina population ($r^2$>0.93, p<0.005), while Microcystis (MIES-90) and Oscillatoria (NIES-204) reduced the zooplankton ($r^2$=0.97, p<001). Fish removed about 50% of all algae for 52 hrs, even 60% of Microcystis still remained: all algae reduced ca. 5${\sim}$12% of initial weight. Furthermore, a continuous supply of algae with same density resulted in the death of fish, e.g. 11 days in cyanobacteria Microcystis. Therefore, the growth limitation of silver carp by algae indicates that zooplankton is of direct dietary contributor in planktivores feeding behavior.

Analysis of Food Resources of 45 Fish Species in Freshwater Ecosystems of South Korea (Based on Literature Data Analysis) (국내 담수어류 45종의 먹이원 분석(문헌자료 분석을 중심으로))

  • We analyzed food sources of 45 fish species in 28 genera of 12 families based on literature data in freshwater ecosystems of South Korea. The food sources of 45 fish species included in a total of 26 phyla, 42 classes, 94 orders, 189 families and 294 genera. Among them, animal food sources were 16 phyla, 24 classes, 54 orders, 126 families and 212 genera, whereas plant food sources were relatively small with 10 phyla, 18 classes, 42 orders, 63 families and 82 genera. The animal food sources were classified into Arthropod, Insecta, Diptera and Chironomidae according to taxa. Meanwhile, Bacillariophyta, Bacillariophyceae, Cymbellales and Cymbellaceae were the most abundant among the plant sources. Self-Organized Map (SOM) and network analysis were conducted the food sources were classified into taxonomic groups and the feeding types of fish : 45 fish species were divided into five groups, characterizing 1) fishvores, 2) invertebratevores, planktivores including 3) zooplankton and 4) phytoplankton, and 5) omnivores. The network analysis presented link association between fishes and food sources. Macroinvertebrate including diptera and ephemeroptera were revealed as hub food sources based on network analysis. This literature study would expect that the application model with the food source of fish could be utilized for the evaluation of the food network or chain in freshwater ecosystems.
